RIDING THE WAVE
AUSTRALIA
According to a recent report prepared by the progressive think-tank the Australia Institute (AI), Australia’s manufacturing industry is poised for recovery.
Productivity has rebounded close to its previous peak with the sector currently enjoying its largest improvement in employment conditions in a decade.
• Over 24 months of sustained productivity – the longest stretch of continuous growth since 2005
• 40,000 extra jobs created in the past 12 months
• Activity levels across the sector continue to improve
• Strong new order growth • Broad-based strength likely to persist
As one of the chief industries, the mining of minerals and fuels continues to top the list of Australian exports. Ship building also remains one of Australia’s most important industries as does the aviation industry, which is growing rapidly due largely to the country’s dependence on its internal airports.
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand’s Manufacturing Sector Report 2018 states its manufacturing sector contributed 12% ($23 billion) of NZ’s total GDP in 2017, and manufactured goods along with exports earned $36b in 2017 - making up over half of NZ’s exports.
As in Australia, NZ manufacturing has one of the highest proportions of spending on research and development in the private sector. This is likely to encourage additional R&D spending and foster innovation - making the sector more productive and internationally competitive.
The report also recognises manufacturing as a key driver of economic development pushing change in NZ today.
