B ienvenidos amigos! We have another great Dossier for you this issue – Charles the Bold theDuke of Burgundy who some feel revolutionised warfare by taking it out of the Middle Agesand into the renaissance. Unfortunately perhaps his ideas were a little too ahead of theirtime because they resulted in a series of military defeats; the only saving grace being they

were magnificent and spectacular defeats! As with most of our articles it is a passionate labour oflove by our writer George Moraitis – a devoted follower of “Chucky” as we call him! We are very pleased to welcome the noted naval author David Manley to our team who offers a WW2scenario of the Royal Navy versus the Italian Navy – something off the beaten track. Confirming theSpanish connection there is an article on the famous Azul Legion, Spanish volunteers who braved theEastern Front fighting for the Wehrmacht and who found themselves ultimately on the losing side. Ourregular contributors Guy Bowers and Paul Darnell come up with something interesting as usual. Paulwith some Spanish building for Sharpe fans. Guy kicking off a series of articles on those Scoundrelsof legend, the stuff of countless tales, myths and films starting with the Highwaymen. We preview Field of Glory, an exciting new venture between Osprey Publishing and SlitherineStrategies. If such an effort can bring more new players into the historical fold it can only be a goodthing. Last but not least as always a big thanks to David for his tremendous help in pulling the issuetogether.

WARFARE AT READING 2007Reading may seem a long way from London but there is a fastconnection from Paddington. This show, run by the Wargames As-sociation of Reading (WAR for short) has a lot to offer as it takesplace over a weekend which allows competitions to be rolled inwith the usual display & participation games, trade & societystands and all the side attractions such as the bring and buy. Ta-king place in the Rivermead Centre, a large leisure complex its se-lection of halls means all the various events can be separatelyhoused but within comfortable distance of each other. The com-petitions included the usual favouritesbut with new additions for Field of Gloryand DBMM. There were three competi-tions for Classic DBM and it will be inte-resting to see how these fare in the futu-re. A very nice mix of games coveringhistorical as well as science fiction andfantasy from familiar territory like Napole-onics and ACW to an unusual game pre-sented by Abbey Wood Associates on theBurkina-Faso, Mali Christmas

War. On the trade stands itwas good to see newcomers like Sergeants Mess, Oshiro andRaiden Miniatures. Flames of War fans would want to check outKerr and King who had an excellently painted display of very use-ful scenic bases, objectives and gliders for their collection.

MORE FUNNY LITTLE WARSWATERLOO DONE IN PROPER STYLE!More news from Padre Paul Wright, the auteur of Funny LittleWars who is running a very special Waterloo event. They havestandards for playing traditional toy soldiers in the correct form– low lots and rank outsiders who do not know how to pass theport are definitely not welcome in their Mess! And quite right too! This time they have excelled themselves and Waterloo will beplayed at an historic military location in June 2008 with a BlackTie dinner and distinguished speaker. Paul has promised a realBritish Army Field Marshall will be attendance during the day. Forfurther details please contact [email protected].

CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUEWe believe in giving credit where it’s due without gettingtoo Hollywood nominee! We have a number of missedcredits to previous WSS issues. In the Cambrai issue theBreaking the Waves scenario should have been creditedto Alex Buchel instead of Dillon Browne. In the Numan-tia issue photos were provided by Warhammer Historicaland the Swindon and District Wargames Club. Thanksare due to Glenn Foden and Warren Gleeson. The mo-dels were provided by Companion Miniatures and thefortress was from Grand Manner.
