A successful six months lie behind us,with an uncertain second half of the yearahead. Successful because, thanks to ourcustomers, we have achieved an outstand-ing amount despite substantial economicturbulence; uncertain because, accordingto current information, the economic crisishas not yet bottomed out and the courseof the rest of the business year will bedependent on many external factors.

We were also successful in winningone of Austria’s major business prizes,which I accepted on behalf of all ouremployees, together with my son andmanager of the Felbermayr BuildingOperations division. The golden Pegasus

was awarded for the years of successful,continuing development of the Felbermayrgroup of companies.

We are proud of the place among thetop Austrian companies that this awardhas earned us. But there is one thing weknow for certain: our growth depends onour customers, who present us daily withnew challenges and stimuli, together withever greater and ever more difficult tasks,and employees who meet these chal-lenges and accept these tasks, developingnew solutions and new ideas every day.And something else we know: at timeslike this it is essential to keep our feet onthe ground and not be blinded by the lime-

06 CIVIL ENGINEERINGIn October last year the Felbermayr CivilEngineering division began construction workon the Eberstalzell intersection of the A1 Westmotorway. Despite the most unfavourableweather conditions, the new junction wasopen to traffic after only eight months.

08 IN PICTURESIn a construction period of around twelvemonths, the Structural Engineering, CivilEngineering and Special Civil Engineeringdivisions, using Felbermayr lifting technology,erected a 2,000 square metre multipurposesports hall with additional climbing and tennisareas. Work on the project in Wels began inApril last year. A special mention should bemade in this case of the successful integra-tion of the existing listed building. Thesuccessful showcase project was officiallyopened on 18 July by head of the provin-cial government, Josef Pühringer.

The Life Ball, Europe’s biggest charityevent for the fight against HIV onceagain called on the hire services of theFelbermayr subsidiary in Lanzendorfnear Vienna. The equipment hiredincluded an articulated telescopic plat-form with a working height of 43 metresand numerous other platforms and lifttrucks as well as cranes. Two of these –with a 100 tonne load capacity – liftingin tandem were sufficient to lift the 25-tonne stage roof to a height of25 metres.

With a maximum working height of 103 metres, the “F-103 LTK” is the new star inthe Felbermayr lifting technology firmament. The device, known in specialist cir-

cles as the “highest stage in the world”, had its maiden outing at the Stattersdorf windfarm near St. Pölten in Lower Austria, where it was use for the technical inspection ofwind power turbines operated by international plant operators WEB Windenergie. Fitted toa five-axle all terrain crane chassis, the heavy-goods platform can handle any off-road con-ditions and can be set up in four different support configurations. Another interesting tech-nical detail is the heavy lift cage, designed for a nominal load of 530 kilograms.

The Felbermayr civil engineering and spe-cial civil engineering divisions are currentlyworking on a joint project. The job, atSteyregg, Upper Austria, involves reroutinga road, including the construction of a rail-way underpass to increase road safety. Asthe rails run directly alongside a rocky wall,the Felbermayr civil engineering team hadto use blasting, in addition to excavators.The Felbermayr special civil engineeringemployees are involved in the profiling ofthe wall. Their job is to install slope rein-forcements up to 25 metres high using injec-tion bore anchors, rock bolts and sprayedconcrete, as well as permanent cableanchors with precast concrete parts andheavy rock baskets. A total of approx.

ANNIVERSARY20 years of Sareno

Managing director Leopold Fischer andemployees of the company Sareno, basedin Ulrichsberg, Upper Austria, recently cele-brated 20 years of business. The company isspecialised in total thermal insulation forfaçades. Another cause for celebration isthe repeat award of the “Austrian ModelCompany” (Österreichischer Muster be-trieb) designation, an indication of qualitygiven by the Quality Austria organisation fortwo years at a time. Sareno achieved 118out of a possible 119 points.

1,000 linear metres of anchors were sunk upto 15 metres deep in the rock. A special fea-ture of this project is the fact that rail trafficwas maintained during the works, with aspecial temporary bridge erected to releasethe area for the underpass beneath therails. Some blasting was needed beneaththe rails, which made the work even moredifficult. The works were completed by theend of July.

EXPANSIONNew branches inRomania, Bulgaria andSlovakia

Felbermayr lifting technology hasrecently increased its presence with

a new branch in the heart of Slovakia, inthe city of Zvolen with a population of45,000. Branch manager Jozef Duricaand his employees provide customerswith cranes and lifting technology. Thesphere of responsibility of “FelbermayrSlovakia Managing Director” RichardTarbuk has been increased by the addi-tion of this branch to those at Bratislavaand Kosice.

In addition to the Bucharestbranch, established in 2006, Felbermayrhas had an increased presence inRomania for a few weeks now, in theBlack Sea port of Constanta and inTimisioara near the borders with Serbiaand Hungary. Activities in Constanta areconcentrated on the movement of heavygoods through the harbour, while inTimisioara the services provided rangefrom heavy goods transport to crane,platform and lift truck hire. Following thedeparture of Gunter Seebacher, whoplayed a crucial role in developingFelbermayr’s presence in Romania, theinterim management of the subsidiarywill be taken over by management assis-tant Thomas Titura.

The city of Haskovo in the south ofBulgaria is home to Felbermayr Bulgaria.The branch manager of this site, whichoffers services from heavy goods trans-port to crane and platform hire, isValentin Radev. The division is managedby Peter Stöttinger, who is also responsi-ble for the Project Management depart-ment in Wels. He is supported on theground by Christian Krieger, located inthe Varna branch on the Black Sea.

INNOVATIVESuction instead of excavation

The new technology of the suction dredger means that excavation works can now becarried out much more quickly than previously. This has been made possible by an

innovative suction system with up to eight bar suction pressure, which enables a widevariety of materials, such as soil, gravel, rubble and sludge to be sucked away. The size ofthe materials is only limited by the diameter of the hose, 0.25 metres. An integrated pneu-matic hammer and other ground-loosening tools can quickly break down rocks on siteready for sucking up, dust-free, into the container. Contact: [email protected]

A FIRSTPIPE TRANSPORTATION FOR PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION

Since the end of last year Felbermayr hasbeen involved in Detmold (Germany) in

the transportation of pipes for a pipeline con-struction project and the production of thenecessary equipment. One of the first pipetransportation jobs was successfully complet-

ed in May. The aim of the job was to constructa gas pipeline for the Austrian crude oilprospecting company RAG from Puchkirchenin Upper Austria to Haag, 20 kilometres away.This required the transportation and laying ofaround 1,200 pipes, each 18 metres in length,to form the line over a period of two months.

On the more demanding sections of ter-rain, all-wheel drive special vehicles were

used, with low-pressure tyres to protect theground surface and the ability to negotiatemost terrains, as well as tracked vehicles withmounted cranes. Loading and unloading ofthe 2.5-tonne steel pipes was carried out byvacuum suction plant installed especially forhandling the pipes. The use of vacuum liftingequipment for loading and unloading thepipes ensures a very high safety standardand avoids the need for high-risk, time-con-suming handling with chains and hooks tohold the pipes.

BAUTRANSAN ADDITION TO THE RANGE OF SERVICES

Since May the lifting technology range offered by the Felbermayr subsidiary BauTrans inLauterach (Austria) has been expanded by a Liebherr LTM 1400. The 400-tonne crane

can handle lifts of more than 120 metres and jib extensions of 92 metres. The investment isworth every penny, says BauTrans managing director Christoph Müssler, especially consid-ering the versatility offered by new rear wheel steering and the very latest electronic cranecontrol system. The company, founded in 1972 in Vorarlberg to provide specialised and heavytransportation, now has branches in Liechtenstein and Hungary. The range of services hasalso expanded considerably over the years. Today, in addition to the transport services andcrane hire, they also offer assembly logistics and platform and lift truck hire. CONSTRUCTION OF SPORTS COMPLEXAN ADDITION TO THE SERVICES OFFERED

The Civil Engineering and Pipelines department, based in Salzburg now offers thenew service of sports facility construction. It is currently working at sites in Thalgau

and Grossarl. The work, commissioned by the local authorities, includes the creation offootball fields and tennis courts with natural and artificial turf, as well as multipurposeand long-jump facilities, beach volleyball courts and street soccer pitches. At theGrossarl sites existing facilities needed to be cleared first. The Grossarl leisure centredevelopment also involved channel and road works, the establishment of a flood-controlretention area and the laying of water pipes.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERINGExtension and renovationof bank

Starting with demolition work, the struc-tural engineering division has been busysince March with an extension projectfor the Raiffeisenbank in Wels. The jobinvolves the construction of a five-storeyoffice building including undergroundcar park. The property, with a floor areaof around 1,000 square metres, has beenerected using frame construction withreinforced concrete slabs. On comple-tion of the extension, the existing build-ing will be renovated in line with therequirements of its future use. The workmust be completed and the buildinghanded over ready for occupation byWorld Savings Day in October 2010.

A 6,800 square metre logistics hall with4,000 square metres of open space wascompleted in Linz in June. The propertyhas rail connections and 2 x 60 tonne and1 x 20 tonne indoor cranes. The Wörglsite was also ready to move into in April.The branch has over 500 square metresof office space and around 1,500 squaremetres of workshops. There is also awash bay and undercover parking.

Construction of A1 Westmotorway junctionIn October last year the Felbermayr Civil Engineering division, instructed by the public-sector agency ASFINAG,

began construction work on the Eberstalzell intersection in Upper Austria. Contrary to the expectations of

observers in the sector, the construction project was successfully completed and opened to traffic by the planned

deadline of May, despite extremely adverse weather conditions. An excellent performance by the employees of

the Felbermayr civil engineering division.

The ”new build of the Eberstalzell inter-section” construction project was not onlya matter of road works but also includedthe installation of a drainage basin forroad run-off water, signage and noise pro-tection measures and the renovation ofthe hard shoulder in the direction ofSalzburg.

As general contractor we wereresponsible for the whole project,from the actual road works right

through to the erection of noise barriersand installation of overhead signs,” sayssite manager Wall, explaining the scope ofthe project. He goes on to give some keyfigures for the motorway intersection.Around 2,500 metres of channels wereinstalled for the drainage of 800 metres ofroad, 12,000 square metres of asphalt sur-facing was laid and around 120 linear metres

of noise barrier and wildlife protection fenc-ing was erected. In addition, several thou-sand lorry loads were needed for soilreplacement and the base course for theasphalt layer.

Bad weather puts the deadlinein jeopardy

“Last autumn we made a perfect start;everything was running like clockwork. Wewere totally to schedule,” says Wall. But in

March the weather turned unbelievablybad: “Out of 22 working days we only hadfive precipitation-free days,” Wall adds.This led to delays in soil excavation, andalso made it impossible to lay the frostprotection course or undertake soil com-paction. The subsoil was simply much toodamp due to the sustained precipitation,with most problems being caused at theslip road in the direction of Vienna. “Wetried to loosen the ground with a rippertooth to help improve the drying,” says

New technology for soil compaction control

The comprehen-sive compaction ofthe road subsoil

together with control of theprocess form an essential

factor affecting the quality ofroad construction. Felbermayr

achieves this by using as required aGPS-connected measuring system inthe tracked vehicle. This deviceinforms the driver during compaction ofroad sections already covered, theirheight and the compaction results –correctly compacted sections areshown in green; those still requiringcompaction in red. This makes it easierto produce a strong loadbearing layer,saves time, ensures high quality andprevents unwanted surprises fromcheck measurements. Sections com-pacted using this process have signifi-cantly fewer defects during the guar-antee period, and improvement andrenewal works are needed after a cor-respondingly longer time.

Wall. But that did not workand the compaction tests contin-ued to produce negative results. “It wasnot until we replaced the originally-pre-scribed rounded gravel in the upper layerof the road substructure with the substan-tially more stable and thus, in this case,better angular gravel that we were able toobtain optimum results from the com-paction tests,” says Wall, describing thesolution to their dilemma. In April goodweather returned, enabling the works tostart progressing smoothly again. “Inorder to make up the lost time we usedtwo finishers in parallel to apply theasphalt layer in what proved to be a realbattle and an uphill challenge to coordi-

nate,” says Wall of the situation which heand his colleagues ultimately overcameadmirably. Following the asphalting, thehard shoulders and ground profiling in thearea between the entry and exit slip roadswere completed. Time was tight to com-pletion, and the last guide posts were putin position just a few minutes before theplanned opening to traffic at the beginningof May. “I’ve never paid a late-finishingpenalty for delay and don’t intend to,”states Wall strongly.He is optimistic for thefuture and delighted with the exemplarywork of his whole team.

Around 20,000 cubic metres of fill was needed for the road and landscaping, including the relocation of 2,500 cubic metres of humus from anecologically significant area of grassland (to the right of the picture).

That was heavy lifting at the highestlevel,” says Felbermayr managingdirector Wolfgang Schellerer

proudly of the successful job undertakenfor Siemens Energy, overseen forFelbermayr by Boris Albl. He is not onlyreferring to a working height of more thantwelve metres, but also to the successfulcoordination of a variety of heavy liftingequipment and the Felbermayr team fromthe Project Management, Installation andHeavy Equipment departments. The con-denser, generator and turbine were deliv-ered to block 7 of the power station at VASteel in Linz.

220 tonnes suspended from a crane

The heavy components, weighing in at up to220 tonnes, were lifted using an LR 1750.“Managing the crane work with a load of22 metres required the crane to be fitted

with 170 tonnes superstructure ballast and175 tonnes suspended ballast, saysFelbermayr head of crane operations, KlausRuhland. The set-up is known as “SL-DB-42” in the specialist jargon – which in lay-man’s language essentially means – a main

was followed in mid-June by the subsequent supply of a turbine and generator. The scene of this prestigious job

involving intensive highly-technical work was a power station for Voestalpine Steel in Linz (Austria).

LIFTING TECHNOLOGY

High-level heavy assembly

4 x 2 push and pull cylinders were usedto move the 220-tonne generator alongthe moving track into the power stationbuilding.

The turbine is still suspended from the lift-ing frame – it still has to be connected tothe condenser before the turbine can belet down.

In the next stage, employees of theInstallation department in Linz (Austria)will take the generator, already waiting onthe moving track, and position it on thefoundation in front of the lifting frame.

boom 42 metres in length. Once fitted out inthis way the crane reaches a dead weight ofaround 600 tonnes. This in itself would notbe a problem, but for the fact that a conduitfor the Füchlsbach stream ran beneath thecrane. “Due to the nature of that specificsite there was no other possible location,but a statics survey yielded positive results,so we had no cause for concern,” was theverdict of the Felbermayr Project Manage -ment department in Wels. It took almost aweek to erect the technical equipment. Bymid-June good progress had been made:Following successful placement of the con-denser and turbine, the 220-tonne generatorwas secured and ready for the crane. It tookaround an hour and a half for the well-packed heavyweight to reach its first interimstage – the moving track at a height of12.2 metres.

Teamwork for layingthe foundations

This was where the work of the Felbermayr– Heavy Equipment team from Hilden(Germany) began, under the management ofErich Bollenbeck. Using hydraulic equipment,the generator was moved 22 metres, at aheight of some twelve metres, towards thefoundation. Once there, the heavyweightwas taken up by a lifting frame on rails andbrought, free hanging, to its final position infront of the turbine. Franz Brunbauer of theHeavy Equip ment department in Linz wasresponsible for the operational implementa-tion of this procedure. Maximum concentra-tion was required, but no difficulties wereencountered. “We’ve handled a few powerstations by now; we know how to do it,” hesaid with a smile. In the end everyone wasable to congratulate themselves on achievingthis task, by no means an everyday experi-ence even for heavy load professionals.

Condenser, generator and turbine were brought tothe site by water. They were lifted from the ship to themoving track outside the power station by an LR 1750crawler crane with a 600-tonne dead weight. Beforethe load was set down on the roller conveyors of themoving track, the boom had to be rotated 60 degrees.

Erich Bollenbeck – the “Gyro Gearloose”of heavy equipment assembly

Heavy equipment assembly always involvesteamwork, but one man who, together withhis colleague of many years and Holdenbranch manager, Norbert Altmeyer, has putin more than one 24-hour shift is 57-year-oldErich Bollenbeck from Asselsweiler nearDüsseldorf. Trained as a carpenter, he soonchanged his specialism and travelled theworld as an HGV driver, until in the mid-1980she moved to heavy lifting, co-founding aheavy equipment assembly company. Fromthere he assumed a leading role in thedevelopment of new systems. This included

the “invention” of a system by means ofwhich, for example, heavy loads could betransported across bridges that would notnormally be able to bear their weight. Whennot working, the “Do-it-yourself self-madeengineer” also likes to burn some rubber,says Altmeyer about his colleague, who isthe proud owner of a 5.7 litre Cobra AC. Thismakes Bollenbeck well-known to the roadtraffic police, who are often pleased toreward his activities – with his share offines and points.

It took around four months until all the“oversized cargos” as they are known inthe specialist jargon, were correctly

installed. The safe handling of these colos-sal steel components required an XXXLmobile crane, the LG 1750 – a crane witha maximum load capacity of 750 tonnes.On installation of this crane, the work ofthe Felbermayr Lifting Technology employ-ees from Linz began, as described byGünther Wimmer of the Project Manage -ment department in Wels: in order toensure safe lifting, the crane was installedwith an SDBW set-up. “That means that amain 49-metre boom, fitted with a further56-metre luffing boom to extend the mainboom to a total of 106 metres, was used.”A further 220 tonnes superstructure bal-last and 200 tonnes suspended ballastwere also needed to be able to balance theload at a later stage.

A cold spell delays transportation

The two largest components were manu-factured at Lindewerk Tacherding in Bavaria.Their lengths, over 45 metres and 54 metres,meant that from Passau only transport onthe Danube was possible. “The columns tobe transported were transferred from a roadvehicle to a ship in the Winterhafen at Passauusing two mobile cranes,” says Wimmer. Butthen there was an enforced break of twoweeks, caused by the extremely cold tem-peratures. The thick ice prevented travelalong the Danube. This delay naturallycaused havoc with the whole assembly con-cept. “As far as we could we arranged withthe client to bring forward certain otherassembly works on the site – and as soonas the Danube was navigable again the shipset sail. But as other ships had also had towait, there were queues at the locks,” saysWimmer of a hindrance that cost another

day. The ship finally arrived on 26 January atthe Felbermayr heavy goods port in Linz.The next morning both components wereunloaded and transferred immediately ontothe transport vehicle.

Special vehicle for negotiatingbends on industrial sites

The transportation from the heavy goodsport to the air separation plant, some twokilometres away, was carried out on anSPMT (Self Propelled Modular Trailer), alsoknown as a self-propelled vehicle. Whatmakes this special is that it is effectively alowloader and tractor unit in one, with over1,000 horsepower driving force and a load-carrying surface that allows for more orless unlimited adjustment. In order to beable to negotiate tight curves with reallylong parts – as in this case – it can also becombined with pivot plates. “On some

works for an air separation plant, was followed by an order for the transport and lifting equipment. This

was a matter of manoeuvring components more than 50 metres in length across the Voest site, and then

lifting them and placing them vertically in a steel cube with a final height of 56 metres.

The transportation of a 27-tonne cooler demonstrated the strengths and versatility of the self-propelled vehicle.

trips it was ridiculously tight,” saysWimmer. Without the SPMT with pivotplates it would therefore not have beenpossible to transport the 50-metre longcolumns. “But we actually achieved it inless than two hours,” says Wimmer.

Lifting giants for the grand finale

The two cylinders, known as the crudeargon and low pressure columns, withdiameters of up to six metres, weigh 58and 100 tonnes, and were lifted and posi-tioned adjacent to one another in a steelcube around 36 metres in height. The liftwas carried out as a tandem lift – using theLG 1750 and a further huge crane with a500-tonne maximum load capacity, anLTM 1500. It is always impressive to seehow this steel giant can position hugeloads of several tonnes with centimetreprecision. This final lift was a worthy finale,following an out-of-the-ordinary transporta-tion with the self-propelled vehicle. Themain assembly works, including theunloading and installation of further partswith a maximum tonnage of 40 tonnes,were brought to a conclusion at the end ofApril. The works, intended as an expansionto the existing site, are due to be commis-sioned at the end of next year.

A duo of an “LG 1750” andan “LTM 1500” lifted the lowpressure and crude argoncolumns into the 36-metrehigh steel cube, which canbe seen between the col-umn and the tower of the“LG 1750”.

The approx. 110 tonne load of the 54 metrelong low-pressure column was distributedover a total of 14 axles. To enable it tonegotiate tight bends, the SPMT was fittedwith pivot plates.

A water nymph called JördisThe Top 20-placed world-class athlete Jördis Steinegger is firmly on the road

to success. After she lost a sponsor, Felbermayr has now taken the 26-year-

old sportswoman under its wing, offering a car for the mobility she needs.

Acompetitor at the Rome 2009World Championships, the swim-mer from Graz is known as a water

nymph to all her friends. A fitting nick-name, as from her birth under the sign ofAquarius and her earliest childhood, to hercurrent life in Linz, she has felt an almostmagical attraction to the water. But shecame relatively late to professional swim-ming training. “Normally you start at theage of five, but I didn’t start until I was 10,”says the Austrian 11-times recordbreaker.“My father used to take my sister and meto the open-air baths as often as possible.At that time a friend of mine was alreadyin the local swimming club, and she

showed me how to do the crawl properly.”That was the spark which ignited the fire.The 10-year-old later moved from herprimary school to the Sport-BRG academyin Graz, where she had professionaltraining three times a week. “It was notlong before I was winning everything,”says Steinegger, still proud to this day. Hertalent was discovered and the next logicalstep was in 2003, when she moved to theHeeresleistungszentrum in Upper Austria.Here she was given some outstandingopportunities, says the professionalsportswoman, who since 2005 has beengliding through the water under theguidance of Helge Gödecke. At seveno’clock, six days a week, Steinegger pullson her goggles and notches up as many asten kilometres; she does the same in theevenings, making around 3,000 kilometresa year. For Gödecke it is her ambition andwill to succeed that distinguish Steineggeras much as her talent. Equal to his delightat the achievements of Steinegger, who isranked among the top 20 in the world, ishis dissatisfaction with the swimsuitsintroduced at the time of Beijing 2008.Normally four to five world records a yearare beaten, but since last year’s Olympicsthere have been around 120. “It’s acatastrophe,” says Gödecke, comparingthe effect of the swimsuits to that of anairbed. “We all know how easily a swim-mer on an airbed can catch up with

Steinegger is of the sameopinion: “A swimsuit like this costs severalhundred Euros, which means thatchildren with great talent but less wealthyparents could be left standing.” Theinternational swimming organisation willdecide in 2010 whether these suits willbe allowed in future. The matter shouldtherefore beclarified by the next landmarkevent after Rome 2009, the 2012Olympic Games in London. Steineggerwill take what comes: “I give my best -swimming is my life.” P

At the end of last year, Jürgen Schüring took the helm of the Transport department of theFelbermayr branch at Hilden near Düsseldorf. The 53-year-old’s priority, supported by his

previous management experience, is to further expand the company’s activities in road andwater transport from the Hilden branch. Since May 2009 the Civil Engineering department hasbeen under the management of Ing. Walter Mörth. Previously an independent constructioncontractor and graduate of the HTL College of Construction and Civil Engineering, his experi-ence also includes a period as a specialist department manager for an international construc-tion company. According to his own statement, his main aim at Felbermayr is to further expandthe Felbermayr Earthworks, Pipelines and Civil Engineering activities in eastern Austria.
