Chairman’s Message

Hi one and all,

Unfortunately, just as things for Songwriters and Performers were getting back to normal, this COVID-19

virus has struck once again, throwing the Northern Beaches

of Sydney into lockdown.

It seems for every two steps forward we take one back. However, we do have an expert team in New South Wales

working around the clock, to bring this latest cluster under

control.

As we get ever closer to Christmas and the New Year,

here’s hoping we can spend both special days with family

and friends, enjoying food, drink, and especially SONG.

Your Board is closely monitoring the situation, as it changes from day to day.

However, at this stage, the plan continues to be holding the National Songwriting

Awards for the 2020 Australian Songwriting Contest early in 2021. That, of course, is

subject to change if conditions deteriorate further, so please keep an eye on the ASA Website.

The good news is that the ‘Top Thirties’ for 2020 are now up on the Website and are

also included in this eNewsletter. Congratulations to all who made it thus far. Right

now, the Finals judging is well underway, so the excitement at the National Office is palpable.

Vice Chairman and Editor Alan Gilmour has (of course) once again put together an

extremely interesting missive to be digested over the Holiday Season. So, settle back, chill out, and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

Don’t forget, both our Major Sponsors Wests Ashfield and APRA are standing by us,

so please reciprocate by supporting them. If you write music you SHOULD belong to APRA, so join up.

Also, a visit or two to Wests Ashfield this Season would let them know that ASA

Members care about them. Better still, become a Member of Wests Ashfield, and be

sure to inform them that you are an ASA Member.

Your Board wishes all Members, Songwriters, and indeed everyone involved in the

music industry the most wonderful Christmas, and may 2021 be the year of the

Songwriter.

Regards

Denny Burgess Chairman

Editor’s Message Hi Everyone,

Season’s greetings and welcome to the final edition of The

Australian Songwriter for 2020.

In this edition, we’ll finalise the songwriter interviews with

the Category winners of the 2019 Awards, and will feature

Robbie Bostock, 2019 winner of the instrumental Category

and Robert Cini, winner of the 2019 Folk/Acoustic Category.

We also have an ASA Member Profile on Donna Dyson and

her Spotty Kites project. And of course, don’t miss Mark Cawley’s monthly songwriter’s blog.

And lastly, thanks to Carole Beck for all her assistance with the magazine this year.

Take care and stay safe,

Alan Gilmour,

Editor and Vice Chairman

Important Announcements

2020 Australian Songwriting Contest Top 30s Announcement

The Top 30 Finalists in the 2020 Australian Songwriting Contest have now been

announced and the details are on the ASA website under the Contests tab and later in this magazine. Due to the large number of entries and the quality of the songs,

the normal 30 song Categories have many more than 30 songs.

Congratulations to the Finalists and congratulations also to everyone who entered this year’s contest.

ASA Wax Lyricals

More ASA Wax Lyricals are re-opening as live events, as some venue restrictions

ease. You’ll find a selection of recent Wax Lyrical photographs later in the magazine from Sunbury VIC, Hobart TAS, Sydney NSW, Canberra ACT, Northern Rivers NSW,

Newcastle NSW; Ballarat/Goldfields VIC and Cairns QLD.

2020 National Songwriting Awards

Ongoing venue restrictions at the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club have meant

that the 2020 National Songwriting Awards, which was scheduled for Wednesday 28

October 2020, has been deferred until a date in the 2021 New Year, yet to be fixed.

The ASA is working towards a 2021 event, but due to the current health crisis, the situation is subject to ongoing review.

Robbie Bostock: 2019 Winner Of The Instrumental Category

Robbie Bostock was the winner of the Instrumental/World category in the 2019

Australian Songwriting Contest with his song, The New Rivals.

ASA: Welcome Robbie, tell us about your tune, what is The New Rivals about? How

did you come up with that title?

Robbie: The name just came to me. It can be difficult to name an instrumental, yet

it’s quite important as well, because the title can set the tone for the song. When I was writing it, I had an idea that it could potentially be a theme for a movie or TV

show that had a western cowboy feel, so in my head the New Rivals would fit such a

show.

But since it came out a lot of people have said that to them it sounded like a surf

instrumental. Even my Mum said that. It’s interesting what people’s individual

perceptions are when they listen to music.

ASA: You have been a winner in the contest before, haven’t you?

Robbie: Yes, in 2012. That was in my sibling band, The Bostocks. That was a great

night.

ASA: Do the Bostock’s, the band, still exist or are you doing solo these days?

Robbie: Mainly solo. We do the odd Bostocks show, but both Sarah and Brendan are

married and have kids, so it’s hard for them to get on the road, but my Sister Rachel and I do a lot together, she plays the violin and we also write a lot of songs together.

Page 22: The Magazine of The Australian Songwriters Association Inc

ASA: Listening to your instrumental, I was taken aback by the style that you play,

and it reminded me very much of Phil Emmanuel’s style.

Robbie: Absolutely, a lot of people tell me that about my guitar playing. My playing

style is heavily influenced by Phil. I just thought he is the best. Elements of his style

will always come out in my guitar playing, probably more so in this song. I borrowed

a few of his guitar licks in this song. Phil was great at getting tone he was the best at getting that wasn’t he?

ASA: Yes, he was the master of tone.

Robbie: He was the master of tone and also melody. Phil’s original songs were

incredible. He was able to write really great melody and that’s what I was trying to

do with the song. I was trying to write a great memorable melody without trying to

replicate Phil but in a way pay tribute to his sound.

ASA: You also play Phil’s guitar, the Levinson Blade?

Robbie: Yes, I play a Levinson Blade just like Phil. He loved the Levinson. They are

a fantastic guitar to play and they are an awesome tool to take on the road because they are indestructible.

ASA: Did you tour with him at all?

Robbie: Yes, I did. Phil and I actually recorded an album together around 2013

called Chariots of Fire. It was all covers. At first, I was just recording and producing

the album for him and I started doing some playing on it and Phil said we should

make this a collaboration album and that was one of the most incredible things I

Page 23: The Magazine of The Australian Songwriters Association Inc

have ever done. Having Phil in my

home studio, drinking coffee and playing guitar and recording, was

just something I will never forget.

ASA: Where to for you now Robbie? You have a studio but do you tour

around?

Robbie: I am doing anything and everything, at the moment. I am

playing guitar for a lot of different

artists. I do a lot of solo work

throughout Brisbane and the Gold Coast and do gigs with Rachel. I

also teach guitar. I love teaching. I

have got some really good young

students, up and coming guitarists.

A lot of them love the Shadows. I get them into the Shadows music

they love it, and it’s great for them

to learn because it’s melodic, and it

teaches them harmony rhythm and timing.

ASA: They are a band that will

never be forgotten. They were the pinnacle of instrumental music,

good tunes, the whole works.

Robbie: There are a lot of good guitarists and musicians on the Gold Coast. A shout

out the Wrights Music School on the Coast. My mate, Troy Wright, runs a good show up there. We get the students to do a performance for a video every couple of

months. It gives them something to work towards. They have to learn the song and

then perform for the camera, then it’s uploaded onto the schools YouTube channel.

ASA: Why instrumental music for you Robbie? What endears you to that genre?

Robbie: Well, everyone else sings! Someone has to play instrumentals. (Ha ha)

ASA: That’s exactly right.

Robbie: I just love instrumental music. I do a little bit of singing as well, but I will

go to write a song with vocals, and it will turn into an instrumental. Sometimes songs just lend themselves better to instrumentals, I think. A lot can be said with

just music. Where words fail, instrumentals speak I reckon. Nothing will beat a great

melody.

ASA: Thanks for having a chat Robbie we look forward to hearing your performance.

Robbie: I am absolutely humbled and honoured to be here. It’s nice to be

recognized and get some recognition for all those hours of practice. I am truly

honoured.

Australian Government support for home grown live music a boon for local

music and the economy

The announcement today of the first tranche of Live Music Australia funding is a critical first step in supporting an industry that is worth $16 billion to the Australian

economy.

• This announcement is the first tranche of Live Music Australia funding

• The Live Music Australia initiative is part of the $30.9 million Australian Music Industry Package providing $22.5 million over four years to assist thousands

of small businesses with grants

• Music in our cities, regional centres and towns creates a competitive

advantage and drives tourism dollars

"From Hobart to Exmouth and Darwin to outback Queensland and the eastern

seaboard, we are thrilled to see the first round of this funding supporting artists and

venues from every corner of the country,” said Dean Ormston, CEO APRA AMCOS.

"Live music is the beating heart of the Australian music industry, supporting the

careers of songwriters and musicians at every stage of their career and propelling

their success both at home and around the world.

"This funding, a direct result of APRA AMCOS advocating with other key industry

organisations for a broad based tax offset for the presentation and development of

live music, is the first step in seeing how live music not only supports the careers of

artists, but helps drive the hospitality and tourism sectors and supports communities nationally”.

21. I Heart Songwriting Club

Do you suffer from writer’s block? Do you

struggle to find time to write songs in your

busy schedule? Do want to be a better

songwriter?

I Heart Songwriting Club is a totally online

songwriting club for all songwriters. Yes,

this club is about writing songs, it’s about

getting unstuck, it’s about becoming

creatively free, but it’s even more than

that. This is a global community of

songwriters supporting each other to keep

creating, to share music and to be totally

creatively satisfied. And the result of all this

is amazing songs that can change your life.

And thanks to the amazing support of the major global organisations we've

partnered with, such as APRA AMCOS (AUS/NZ), IMRO (IRE), UBC (BR), Ivors

Academy (UK), we get to work further and wider now supporting over 850

songwriters from over 22 countries to live their wildest creative dreams by writing

well over 10,000 songs! Some of those songs have been nominated for ARIA Awards,

have been played on major international radio stations, and on festival stages, but

some of those songs are debut singles!

This is bigger than just writing great songs. This is about becoming a better

songwriter.

Imagine how it would feel to be writing songs every week, sharing them with peers,

getting feedback and being a part of something bigger.

Don’t do this alone. Do this with us.

When you join I Heart Songwriting Club, you'll be part of an ongoing and online 10-

week songwriting adventure designed to help you become a more resilient,

productive and confident songwriter. Through our structured challenges and

guidelines, and peer community cheering you on your journey, we support you to

write songs fast (in 1 hour) and with a greater sense of creative freedom than you've

probably had since you were 8 years old!

A big part of the success of our community is sharing your new creations (ie songs)

within your privately assigned groups and giving feedback and encouragement to

one another. And before you start to overthink this, we show you how you can give

feedback effectively without the fear of having to be a critic. In fact, no one expects

perfection in just 1 hour of songwriting, so you can leave your critic at the door.

We love to offer other bonuses to our members, such as trainings, shout outs,

showcases, features and more. Members will be emailed about such awesomeness!

And we encourage our members to contact us too! www.iheartsongwritingclub.com.

3. How Much Are Your Songs Worth?

Well, if your name is Bob Dylan, then your songs are worth precisely US$300 million. Yes, that’s

the price that The Bobster has sold his catalogue

to Universal Music Group for.

The catalogue comprises over 600 songs, including classics such as Blowin’ In The Wind,

The Times They Are A Changin’, Mr. Tambourine

Man, Like A Rolling Stone, All Along The

Watchtower and many others.

With streaming having propped up an industry

that was faltering from piracy in the 2000s,

artists' back catalogues have become more

valuable.

The deal does not include rights to Dylan's own

recordings of his material. Instead, it hands over control of the copyrighted lyrics and

melody. From now on, whenever these 600 songs are streamed or played on the

radio, those royalties will go to UMG.

Billy Thorpe Scholarship, funded by the

Queensland Government through Arts

Page 51: The Magazine of The Australian Songwriters Association Inc

with an established producer and receive career-planning advice from Chugg

Entertainment.

The winner of the Billy Thorpe Scholarship will be announced at the 2021 Queensland

Music Awards announced this week to be taking place on Tuesday 20 April at The

Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. QMusic CEO Angela Samut is looking forward to seeing emerging Queensland

musicians putting themselves forward for this opportunity.

“QMusic is grateful for the support of the Queensland Government in making the Billy Thorpe Scholarship possible, and its shared mission to invest in emerging and early-

career artists to help build our local industry.

“As we come out of 2020, QMusic will continue to offer and seek out opportunities for our local industry through collaborations and partnerships in order to help them to

get ahead,” said Ms Samut.

“Although our industry has struggled due to the effects of COVID-19, our industry is

courageous, dedicated and innovative, and we will get back on our feet. We encourage artists and industry professionals to reach out to our QMusic team to see

how we can help you in 2021 with opportunities like the Billy Thorpe Scholarship.”

Brisbane-based singer-songwriter Harry Phillips won the award at the Queensland Music Awards in 2020, just before COVID-19 hit Australia and the industry started to

shut down. These restrictions haven’t stopped him using the award to write and

record two songs for his upcoming EP as well as planning for the next stages of his

professional career.

“Winning the Billy Thorpe Scholarship allowed me the opportunity to work with

amazing producers and people I never would have had access to normally”, said

Harry Phillips.

Robert Cini: 2019 Winner Of The Folk/Acoustic Category

Robert Cini was the winner of the Folk/ Acoustic category in the 2019 contest with

his song Different Road.

ASA: Welcome Robert, tell us about your song.

Robert: It’s a song that’s just been released about a month ago from my debut

album, the song is inspired from a personal aspect. I am vision impaired and basically, it’s about being a bit different.

I didn’t want to write the song solely about me I wanted to make it relatable to other

people because I am not the only person that’s a bit different, we all feel a bit different at times not just people with disabilities, so it’s for anyone who at times

feels a bit out of place, I think they can relate to this song.

The heavy subject inspiration is a contrast to the way the song actually sounds

because it has that nice islander rhythm to it almost reggae, it’s something completely different than what I have done in the past and it has a fun vibe to it and

talks about celebrating being different.

ASA: Your album is called Imaginary Fun what other songs are on the album?

Robert: There is a song called Time Machine and that actually made the top thirty

this year for the ASA contest so that was pretty cool and it’s another single release

and it has had a great reaction to it.

Page 53: The Magazine of The Australian Songwriters Association Inc

ASA: What sort of reaction have

you had from media outlets performing venues etc.?

Robert: It’s been fantastic, the

songs have been getting radio play all around the country. I have just

finished doing a couple of album

launches up in north Queensland

and just finished playing the Tablelands folk festival up there as

well. I have been doing lots of

gigs and people seem really taken

with the songs, it’s been great.

ASA: Are they all your own songs

on the Album?

Robert: Absolutely, I have written all the songs, people have been

commenting on the lyrics and how

the songs have touched them in

some way so that’s been good from that aspect that they are

actually listening to the songs

intimately.

ASA: You were a were a winner in

the contest back in 2010 weren’t

you.

Robert: Yes, I was, that was a while ago now.

ASA: What’s been happening in your life since then?

Robert: Quite a bit, not all great, that’s why it’s taken me so long to get this album done. After my last EP, I wanted to write an album next and spent a lot of time

improving my songwriting. I wrote a heap of songs and recorded demos in my home

studio and was really serious about it and then I was struck down with trouble with

my voice which turned out to be Thyroid cancer, so it’s been a longer journey that I wanted, but it’s so great now to have the album out. Winning this award is just the

icing on the cake it’s great to get that recognition.

ASA: So, with an album under your belt where are you heading now?

Robert: I don’t know as yet. I am still riding the album train, but I am looking

forward to getting back into writing which I haven’t had time to do, so that will be

the next thing I do after I finish touring for the album. I am trying to get it to as

many people as possible.

ASA: Thank you Robert for the chat and best of luck for the future.

Should I Pay To Have My

Songs Critiqued?

Over the weekend, I noticed a thread on

Facebook that was all too familiar to me. A well-known and respected magazine

was offering a paid critique service for

songwriters. The critiques are to be done

by pro-songwriters.

Just the mention of critiques is enough to bring out some haters. If you’re in social

media songwriting groups, you’ve no doubt read some comments to the effect that “I

don’t need some pro-songwriter just trying to make a buck tearing my song apart”.

That’s a pretty tame post as these go. I’ve seen much worse. I feel in turn, bad for

the pro-songwriters who are being dumped on as well as the ones who come across

as bitter and frustrated.

Pro?

I coach songwriters all over the world and I imagine I would be considered a “pro” by

virtue of making my living from songwriting over the course of my life. In my mind the word “pro” does not make me better than the songwriter who’s writing just for

the love of it, just means I had commercial success.

I don’t offer a separate critique service and never have. I’m not saying it’s not valuable, just not the way I decided to go about working with songwriters. So,

having cracked open Pandora’s box, to my point.

Pandoras Jukebox

Critiques can be a huge learning curve, especially if making a living from writing

songs is your goal. I understand that’s not the reason everyone out there writes

songs and that’s fine. If getting your song critiqued is not for you there’s no reason

for you to sign up for one of these offers.

Page 57: The Magazine of The Australian Songwriters Association Inc

If you’ve been writing songs for a while you know people are going to have different

opinions, sometimes wildly different but…until the day you work with a publisher this may be the only avenue for you to get wisdom from the people who are doing

exactly what you want to do. Their opinion is not the be all end all for your song but,

with the right person doing the critiquing you stand a good chance of getting some

hard-earned experience and wisdom. What you do with it is always up to you.

Yes, I Would Have

If it were me starting out, I would have jumped at the chance to have a pro listen and give me constructive criticism, but it was not available at the time. Might have

saved me from writing a slew of bad songs.

Bottom Line

You need a thick skin to put your songs out there. You also need to do your research

whenever your money is on the line. Make sure the people behind these offers are

the real deal then decide if this investment makes sense for you.

Lastly, most of the songwriters I know are not desperate for your money. The ones I

know are wanting to give back. No matter if you agree with me keep in mind it’s up

to you to decide if these services are a benefit. If not, just don’t use them but I hope

you won’t begrudge the writers who choose to. Believe me, there’s room for every kind of songwriter out there.
