Another Contendering.Well, this one was supposedto be the end-of-seasonissue; then it became themidwinter issue, and by thetime you receive it, it lookslike it will virtually be thespring issue…Unfortunately, having overthe last couple of years been

able to largely choose when I could put the magazinetogether, it has been something of a shock to return toreal work – which has meant that this time money-grubbing has dictated the timetable. For those of youwho missed poring over Contendering over the winter,sorry.

We have something of a busy year ahead of us thisyear, with a european championship and two worldchampionships, as well as our usual domestic fixtures,all within the next twelve months. I hope to be doinga little more this season (I don’t think I could do less!),particularly as Tim Holden has managed to find us acouple of new places to visit.

Although I did not travel around the circuit last year, Ihave been kept in touch with what’s going on, despiteexperiencing a distinct shortage of open reports. If youfinish fourth at a meeting, it’s your task to write thereport – and please do send them through to me aswell as Yachts & Yachting, so I can get them inContendering and on the web site.

Its good to see that there will be a number of newboats around in 2001, including a small clutch of newBonezzi boats. Its also nice to see that secondhandboats are still selling well and that we have a numberof new members joining the class, most notably thecurrent Endeavour Champion, Jim Hunt, who is shortlyexpecting to take delivery of a new Rondar boat.

Speaking of new members, there appear to be quite anumber of active Contender sailors out there who arenot members of the association. To those of you whoare members I say “catch ‘em and recruit ‘em!” – themore members we have, the more representative theassociation becomes of Contender sailors, and we allbenefit. To the more than just a few non-members whodownload this magazine from the class web site, I say“please join us”. The association works hard to promotethe boat, represent the class at nat ional andinternational levels, safeguard the design, and organiseContender racing in the UK. It manages to do this withvery limited resources. If you own and sail a Contender,

whether a member or not, the association supports you,so it seems only fair to ask you to support the association- the annual subscription of £25 is not individuallyexpensive, but collectively it will make all the differenceas to how well the class as a whole can be represented.

Once more down unto thebeach. Well at least it’s timefor the snowdrops to start topoke out. Those of you thatskulk away for the Winter,will go and remember whereyou last dumped your boat,and take it for a capsize toclean it out. That’s what youtell the rescue boat driveranyway. Those of us that

have been manfully out there taking the gales in ourstride and lucky to still have a mast and banana shapedboom, will be starting to defrost pretty soon.

So soon another year and another season gallopstowards us. First there’s the chance to visit Sailboat inMarch to gear up your enthusiasm and buy those newnon-slip boots you’ve been promising yourself, only tofind the’re like ice skates on the gunwale.

Moving on in 2001 we have a busy year starting with aEuropeans in Brittany in late May. It ’s a first forcontenders to go to France for a championship and aninteresting departure for us to go to a country wherethe class is pretty well unknown. I’m sure the Frenchfleet will be there in force if he’s not busy. A couple ofmonths later in July we have a four day Nationals atEastbourne. They know us well there, having had afleet of varying size for some time, and have alwaysrun races for us very efficiently. The format will be alongthe lines of last years very successful Nationals at NorthBerwick only without the kilts. Hopefully Gavin will havehis bagpipes though, complete with bum note. Plentyto do and see in the area and a full social program willbe organised. So make a point of being there even ifjust to prevent yourself being voted onto the committeeat the AGM.

From the Nationals it’s pack up time for the Worlds inKingston, Canada. Alan Mollat is doing a grand job ofrounding up a sizable posse to do that one on LakeOntario and it’s not too late to get in touch with himand get on out there. The boatsare then back for a spot of Autumn practice, ending ina dip at Rutland, before swiftly setting off for the warmersouthern latitudes of Melbourne for the 2002 Worldsearly in January. It looks like the boats at least will behaving a good time even if the owners are a bit grumpy!And finally, don’t miss out on the Northerns atBridlington, if for nothing else a chance to view SandyClapham in his natural habitat.

Well as you all know this ismy last year as secretary. Ihave really enjoyed my timeand wil l no doubt stayinvolved helping the fleet inother ways. It is yet againencouraging this yearhaving gone through therelatively quiet time of the

pre-Christmas period to start getting those phone callsagain from prospective new fleet members.

There is still a strong, healthy interest in the boat and ithas made me think carefully about some of thediscussions I have seen from Contender sai lorsthroughout the world on the list server. I have come tothe strong view that we should ensure that the boatstays largely as it is now. Fine, lets take advantage ofchanges in available materials, but the fundamentals interms of design, weight, strength etc. should stay asthey are. After all, it is a challenging boat and we canrace them in all conditions. There are many new boatson the market (too many in my opinion) and none ofthem are a Contender, they are all trying to be lighter,faster, more extreme. Why should we want to makechanges that puts the Contender in the same marketspace? Yesterday, I saw an old Ford XR2 with addedspoilers and dark windows. The car made me think, ifwe try and change the Contender will it look like thatcar – bits added and changed that just didn’t look right-and it certainly had me thinking – If he wanted a sportiercar why didn’t he buy one in the first place? I’ve alsostarted thinking more about why I sail a contenderrather than an RS600 or something else. I got into thefleet when I joined Rutland Water in 1988 with a Laser.Just down the beach were 7 contender sailors who werevery friendly and clearly having a good time. When Istarted investigating the boat, everyone was veryhelpful. My concerns in getting the boat in the firstplace were, would it be as competitive as the Laser fleetand would there be enough boats? I wasn’tdisappointed on either front. Now I’ve been sailingthem for a long time, there are other very importantconsiderations - the people in the class are a good laughand the fleet gives me excellent overseas sailing. Solets keep the boat as it is now – progression with thetimes but not fundamental changes. What I think weshould focus on is marketing on our current strengths,competitive, strong international fleet, sailable in a hugewind range, excellent sea boat, great investment as the

boats themselves last for ages and stay competitive.There are plenty of sailors out there who do want achallenge which combined with the features mentionedabove still keep the Contender popular. If we try andchange too much we will become just another RS orMusto Skiff. If I wanted one of those I’d buy a boat that

had been designed to be one from scratch.

I was looking back at some of the photos from the yearand thought I would share some of them with you.The first is an excuse to thank Robert for his involvementand help in the class and to say how appreciated hewas at the Nationals in Scotland.

Then we have Gavin, the race officer, Ian, and otherorganisers at the club who we really have to thank fortheir brilliant organisation of a great event.

Then the worlds – what a great event! Of course, madeso good by the number of Brits in attendance– andended with Stuart actually helping! First time foreverything.

And the series of the Champion getting a good soakingfrom – well it looks like they were all British...

Over the last year or so there hasbeen considerable debate withinthe class as to what, if any, rulechanges might be desirable topreserve the attractiveness of theclass and prevent the designgrowing outdated [see Email Forum,

Contendering, July 2000]. This resulted in a series of proposalspresented at the ICA AGM at the world championships inMedemblik, culminating in the postal ballot for which you shouldhave recently received forms.

International Chairman Chris Mitchell gives us a bit morebackground to the proposed rule changes...

You should all, by now, have received the voting slipfrom our venerable and revered secretary, DavidDavies, so that you can vote on the various rulechanges proposed at the 2000 AGM held atMedemblik during the World Championship. For thebenefit of those of you who were not there, and whohave not seen the debate on the e-groups forum,here is some of the background to those proposals.

For some time I have been enthusiastic about changesto the Contender which will ensure that it continuesto be perceived as a modern boat. Clearly, there areelements of the boat which cannot be changedwithout major upheaval and which would in effectgenerate a new class. Nevertheless, there are somefairly straightforward things that can be done whichwill ensure an image which is up to date andprogressive. We need to remember that theContender is now 33 years old; the rules were framedaround materials and construction techniques thatwere current in 1967 – I suppose before a goodlynumber of you were born, although older memberslike me remember it well!

I must briefly explain the system for getting the classrules changed. Any proposal must be presented to

the AGM of the ICA. At least two-thirds of eligiblevoters (i.e. members of national associations that havepaid the appropriate levy to the ICA) at the AGM mustbe in favour of the change. If this condition issatisfied, the change goes out to a postal vote. Thepostal vote is conducted by each of the nationalassociations on behalf of the ICA. Three months mustbe allowed for voters (who again must be membersof national associations that have paid the appropriatelevy to the ICA) to get their votes in to their nationalsecretaries. There must be a two-thirds majority infavour of the changes of the returned votes and thereis no minimum number of votes that need to bereturned for the process to be valid. In other words,if out of 200 possible voters, only 3 people vote, 2 infavour and 1 against, that is fine – those who don’tvote can’t hold up progress! The rule changes thenneed to be ratified by the ISAF at their AGM, heldannually in November. The whole process is quiteslow and cumbersome, which is a problem in itself,but that is another issue - one which I believe needsupdating too, but that’s another issue.

We have tried to frame the proposed rule changes ina manner which is as permissive as possible. In otherwords, rather than specify a material for the mast,we have merely proposed removing the restrictionthat only permits aluminium. Thus, if the changegoes through, we can use other materials, whichobviously will include carbon fibre, but if someonehas a preference for aluminium, or doesn’t want theexpense of a new mast in another material, they cancarry on using the one they’ve got. Similarly, we have

proposed removing the restriction prohibited loosefooted sails – if the change goes through, you don’thave to rush out and get a new sail, but can continuewith the one you already have. Booms have forsometime been a problem. The popular Supersparsection isn’t quite man enough for the job, and sowe have proposed increasing the maximum size ofthe section so that some of the beefier sectionscurrently available are acceptable. If you choose tohave a loose-footed sail, you will also have the optionof have one of those big fat round jobbies with notrack.

We do not believe that any of the proposals will resultin a sudden increase in speed, but we hope that aperiod of further rig development will ensue, perhapsultimately resulting in some speed increase, but alsoin a more controllable rig with fewer breakages ofbooms. You might ask why we haven’t gone thewhole hog and allowed carbon booms and reducedthe mast weight as well. I certainly wanted to seethose changes incorporated, but the ICA membershipseems to be quite a conservative one, and we couldnot get those proposals through the AGM. Thus,what you have on your voting slip is what themembership was prepared to accept. I hope thatthe other changes will come along in due course,but I think it’s a bit of a shame we cannot get it allthrough in one go.

As to the proposals themselves, perhaps the mostcontentious one is that affecting the mast. I have feltfor some time that we ought to remove the restriction

that only permitted aluminium. The main reason forthis idea was the notion of encouraging further rigdevelopment. However, it has now become clear thatthere is an additional factor the inevitable rise in thecost of aluminium, and the disappearance of variousaluminium components. Apparently the major use ofaluminium is in the aviation industry, where there is anannual requirement for 300 000 metric tonnes to buildnew aircraft. As it is in short supply, prices are risingand the industry is increasingly looking for alternativematerials. Part of this drive is undoubtedly performance,but it is partly cost as well.

The tubes used to construct our masts are an aerospacecomponent, but one that the aerospace industry doesn’tuse anymore. Dinghy sailing is a cottage industry andso is not in a position to get limited runs of tubes made– the smallest order for tubes would be for a tonne,and you don’t need to be Einstein to work out howmany masts that would make (about 200 for the sloweramongst you). There just isn’t the requirement for thatmany masts in a time period that would allow anymanufacturer to make a profit. A large company likeProctors can succeed because they are using the samesection for a number of different classes and hencegenerate a bigger market for their product.

To cut a long story short, you cannot now buy anywherein the UK a suitable size and quality of aluminium tubeto build a mast with the bend characteristics that wewant. If you don’t want a Proctor or Superspar mastfor your Contender, you now have no choice but to goto Goldspar. That’s an expensive and difficult option ifyou don’t live in Australia. If, on the other hand, youcould use carbon, there are umpteen suppliers of tubesclamouring for business. You could even build oneyourself. As for the expense, we have been reliablyinformed that whilst “goldplating” is very possible, witha bit of common sense it is possible to turn out carbonmasts at a perfectly reasonable price. Hence, the ICAcommittee believes that carbon masts are the way tomove forward. As the overall weight and tip weightsremain the same, we do not believe that there is going

to be a sudden performance advantage to having thenew material. Undoubtedly there will be some peoplethat will prefer to continue using aluminium masts foras long as they can get them. However, the proposedchange will permit an evolution that will otherwise beforced on us in due course, so I believe it is vital,particularly to those of us who sail in Europe and NorthAmerica, that this proposal goes through now.

As for the boom and sail changes, we had originallyhoped to get agreement to vote on derestricting theboom material as well. Unfortunately, the membershipdid not vote in favour of that change, although theydid agree to the increase in size and to remove theprohibition against loose-footed sails. I think it wouldbe very helpful if these two proposals went throughnow and we can deal with the issue of boom materialsagain next year.

The major objection to all of these proposals has beena belief that rig costs will dramatically increase. Thereis, however, no evidence that I can find to support thisbelief. Some increases are inevitable anyway, even ifwe stick with aluminium. The other perceived problemis that there will be a dramatic performance increase sothat anyone wanting to be competitive will be forcedto buy a new rig. Again we do not believe that this willbe the case: indeed, there may need to be some timefor development before the new set-up can rival theold one!

So, there’s a summary of the events behind the proposedrule changes. If you haven’t returned your voting slip,please make a point of doing it soon. You have untilthe end of February. Over the next couple of years Ihope that we can simplify and hasten the process ofchanging the class rules. Other changes that I wouldlike to see are an increase in boom height andsimplification of the foil profiles, but perhaps I’ll keepthose ideas for another edition…

The nationals will be hosted by Eastbourne Sovereignsailing Club on Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 July. Theformat will be similar to that which was so successfullast year at North Berwick – 10 races (2 Thursday, 3Friday and Saturday and 2 Sunday) with thecompetitors voting on courses to be sailed. Therewill be a full social programme.

Eastbourne is on the south coast, 60 miles west ofDover, so easy for overseas sailors. It offers goodopen sea sailing with only a short sail to the coursearea. Launching and recovery is possible at all statesof the tide. There is loads of accommodation in andaround the town – something to suit every one(camping, B&B, holiday flats or hotels) and for all thefamily to do. Further information can be obtainedfrom the Eastbourne Tourist and Information Centre

This will be the third visit of the class. The first was in85 when Myron Prosser started his report by saying,“This was a week to remember in so many ways –lots of wind, big waves, some sunshine, superbfacilities, some very close racing and very pretty girls”.Can’t find the report for the 92 Championship butthere is a reference in the Feb 93 newsletter to the“sadistic race officer”! [Ed: I remember it! That Friday - whocould forget it! Force Zillion wind and Scary Monster waves...what on earth what were we doing out there! (besides a LOTof swimming!)] It hasn’t changed since then except anextension to the clubhouse (courtesy of a lotterygrant) and an extra beach winch.

The high point of the season north of the border wascertainly the UK Championships. Inevitably the eventtended to over-shadow the rest of the season.

The turn out was every bit as good as we had hopedfor with 67 entries from 7 countries, not only was therequantity but quality, three past (and one future!) WorldChampions. The home win for Scotland was welldeserved and popular. Ian Renilson went on to loganother very creditable performance at this yearsEndeavour Trophy where he and Stewart Robertsonfinished 4th.

Running the event over four days in May was alwaysgoing to be risky. Too early for the sea breezes, whichmake North Berwick so popular in July, in the eventwe certainly had a mixed bag of conditions from thesomewhat exaggerated thunderstorm, to marginallynothing with swell, on the same day and everythingin between. The race management was as good asyou will find anywhere and being able to reach therace area in five minutes instead of fifty-five was anadded bonus.

The hallmark of a good event has as much to do withwhat happens off as well as on the water - in this regardNorth Berwick really excelled. The CaledonianChallenge was of course where the real competitionwas focussed and even though Gavin MacKinnonmade up the 5 teams, the scoring system and allegedlythe results the Scottish team never won any individualday or overall. The Southern Pond sailors were thesurprise top performers. Everyone got a prize everydayand although the Caledonian Brewery beer and theshortbread were well received, the haggis, porridgeand Irn-Bru chews were not so popular with the

winners. The only disappointment was that SandyClapham was not there as he was the local bookiesfavourite for a “See You Jimmy” hat and the organisershad an extra large one put aside especially for him.The other dai ly recipients have already beenembarrassed enough for them not to be ridiculed againfor their exploits. [Gavin: I’ve forgotten and shouldhave written it down at the time but I was busypracticing for my stirring rendition of Scotland theBrave on the bagpipes before we left the beach onthe last day. It obviously did the trick for Ian and,surprisingly, Stuart Jones, who I would have thoughta bit of Morris dancing might have been moreappropriate.]

The post event feed back has been rewarding for allassociated. Gill Wooley, who has been to a fewcontender events in his time, e-mailed to say that hethought that it was the best-run event he had attended(high praise indeed).

������������������(A tour of Scotland’s premier golfing venues)

The usual series of travellers’ events ran throughoutthe season taking in some new venues and retainingthe old favourites. We were pleased to see a coupleof new faces at these events, but after the good turnoutof Scottish boats at the Nationals attendances at thetravellers were disappointing.

Monklands 8/9 April

A bleaker a spot on a wild April weekend you couldnot imagine. Some of us were skiing which wascertainly a whole lot more pleasant and probablywarmer. Blasting reaches, ice cold water in the faceand Ian Renilson dominating with Alistair Reid the onlysailor seriously challenging him.

Prestwick 10/11 June

Another real blast but a poor turnout. GavinMacKinnon held it all together in the only racecompleted, with Stewart Murdoch hanging on (literally)for a second. The reach back to the beach after theyabandoned it all was something else... no othersinglehanders made it to the start line let alone finished!Gavin MacKinnon was grinning like a dog with 2 tailsas it is the only time in his life he has ever been sailingwhere racing has been abandoned due to strongwinds and he has not capsized (as long as you don’tcount the boat getting blown off the trolley in 1 footof water while launching. ) The decision to abandonracing on Sunday had nothing to do with the nowtraditional mega curry on Saturday evening, just adesire not to prang any of these increasingly rareWavelength masts in the surf, which was running.Gavin flew his stunt kite on the beach in the 30-40 ktswind on the Sunday which at £3 for a carbon sparwas a much more affordable option when theinevitable breakages occurred.

Tay Week at Carnoustie 24/25 June

This one was all a bit of a joke! Only three contendersturned up and we were put into a general handicapclass. Conditions were a bit like Monday at NorthBerwick - thunder storms creating huge wind swings,big gusts then nothing. Stewart managed to fluke hisway past the national champion for what the less kindin the golfing fraternity would call a Liz McColgan afterthe local celebrity. For the non golfers this would bewhen you miss-hit your drive down a hard fairway toget a good result (if you want to know why its called aLiz McColgan - thin and not pretty but a good runner.)

RYA Scottish Single Handed Championships, St Andrews 1/2 July

Good event with a big turn out from all classes with abit of aggro between RS600 and Contenders (can’tthink why). Satisfaction for Ian who sailed very well ina range of never very windy conditions to just taketop spot from an RS300 (sailed by another ex-contenderhand Andy Hutchison. ) Other Contenders wereplaced well in the 50+ average lap time fleet with ahuge range of single-handed boats, which is alwayswell attended. This event is back at Prestwick in 2001and should be a cracker.

Royal Tay, East Coast Dinghy Weekend 24/25 June

It was great to have Chris Paterson back from PerthAUS for the event and a real shock (mainly to him)when still hung-over from a 38 hour flight, he tookthe first race in a boat which had not been sailed forfive years and had literally been thrown together forthe event. Mike Denham was in good form and wonthe weekend on a tiebreak from Stewart; Ian neverrecovered from a broken main halyard in the first race.Pictures of Chris’ new AUS Contender generated a lotof interest - some very neat innovations in the fittingout.

Not one to brag...(?), but guess who got a sail at theNorthern Championships at Bridlington last weekend??

Big Nanny Potter did a sterling service with Kids EntsProgramme, (failed to bring me a beer or my trolley,but he’ll be working up to that one..), whilst Mummywrestled the likes of Sandy, Martin and Tim to lead themost of the first race by moderate miles. It was aninteresting little event, with light but trapezeable legs(mine) and a dozen or so Contenders. First day was“beached off” with seas reminiscent of Worthing, Hytheor Eastbourne. The bank holiday Sunday featured thethree races that counted (bad luck Stewart Walker andAndy Mason who turned up for Monday only). Sandycame out at the end of the day as “Nightwatchman”,making the rest of us determined to go out on Mondayin order to prevent Large Head Damage, should hisresults go uncontested. Well, we all had a jolly goodgo, in lightning and thunder and rain to put NorthBerwick in the shadows. Luckily we didn’t get thetyphoons and rocks into the bargain. We did get wetthough and, at the end of the race (we thought),Martin Metcalfe got seriously stitched out by winningthe race which had been abandoned at some pointunknown to us wetheads. So Sandy won (by onepoint) from Mrs. Potter, followed by Tim (Worlds RaceWinner) Holden.

All good stuff and sure evidence that the Fat Lady ain’tsung yet. Watch this space....

Port Edgar 9/10 September

The final event of the travellers’ series was designatedas the Scottish Championships. Saturday providedsome really excellent contender sailing with Ianpulling out big leads on the rest of the fleet. Threeraces were sailed sharing a start with a modest fleetof Finns which seem to be making a reappearance inScotland. Sunday could not have presented a sharpercontrast - there was barely enough wind to stem thetide. After an hour postponement watching a glassyForth the race officer said “We go”. While other foolsreluctantly went afloat the fireball class and thecontenders packed up and went home, a very wisedecision as things turned out.

Who won the series? Well this one may run for longerthan the Bush/Gore contest. The legal fees aremounting by the week. Stewart wins if you countup the points, but as any Florida election officialknows it is not as simple as that, if you extractcontender results from handicap fleets Ian wins. Sincethere is no precedence for using handicapped results(even in some obscure Florida election manuals whichcan decide the fate of the home of Mickey Mouse)Ian wins.

What happens if less than 5 boats turn up at a travelleras you lose your separate start and get put in ahandicap class. This year there will be only 5 travellersbut people will be encouraged to go to the otherevents that we would have visited. It looks far betterfor Contenders to turn up regularly in the handicapclass and do well than to turn up for a traveller wherethe organisers have arranged a separate start andordered an extra barrel of beer only to have torearrange it.

A total of 89 different helms took part in the BCATravellers Trophy of 2000. Stuart Jones rather walkedaway with the event - although he struggled to findhis form at the major regattas, he dominated mostopen meetings through the season, and the real battlewas amongst the familiar faces fighting it out for theother podium places. Nigel Walbank eventually tooksecond in front of Gary Langdown who headed a tightgroup separated by only 6 points.

With the notable exceptions of the Nationals and theInlands, at first sight open meeting attendances overthe year looked a little on the disappointing side.However a closer look shows that we had around 40people attending three or more meetings, not bad byany standards. Turnout at the Nationals was

particularly good with 57 boats making the trip toNorth Berwick. Hopefully we’ll see a few of the Scotsmaking their way south for Eastbourne this year...

If you’re new to the class, and are maybe feeling a bitshy about venturing out with the “old timers”, don’tbe. Contender sailors are a friendly bunch, and oneof the best ways to learn how to sail the boat is to joinin - both on the water, and in the bar, where everyoneis more than happy to pass on a few tips. With a fewnew meetings this year and a good geographicalspread, hopefully we can tempt a few more to have ago in the 2001 series.

Rodger White, King George, showedhis light weather expertise in pulling ahead to acomfortable win. Out of the melee of classes theexperienced heads of Chris “Chairman” Mitchell,Oxford SC, Jones, Gimmler, and Paul kept their hopesalive to finish in that order.

The flnal race again saw a general recall followed bythe appearance of the black flag. The wind had allbut given up the ghost and a number of the fleetrocked and sculled back to an early shower. InitiallyWalbank and Gimmler appeared to have theadvantage on the left hand side of the lake, but atthe first mark Miles, Martin Metcalfe, Killington SC,and Sandy Clapham, Grimwith, emerged from theright with a good lead. Ever the pessimist, Sandy’scomments of “just you watch, the b***** wind will

fill in from behind” echoed round the calm water.Further pronouncements on the light weatherdownwind techniques of Batten and Browett werealso to be heard around Rutland County. The secondreach became a run, closing up the dwindling fleet.The final windward leg saw a large shift to the leftbringing Jones, White and Walbank into contention,with only Miles and Metcalfe able to hold them off atthe finish.

Jones won the inlands without winning a race andalso took the National Travellers Trophy by virtue ofhaving won quite a few races around the country.Recently crowned Northern Champion Sandy “BumFace” Clapham took the Northern Traveller Trophynarrowly, from the much travelled southerner White.

The Handicap Ranking is based on a system developed by long-time class stalwart Robin Ramm. The handicap ratings aregenerated from the open meeting results, and a handicap score is calculated for each event attended. This is theproportion of finishing position to number of entries expressed in terms of 1000 entries: i.e. if 1000 boats compete, boatswill have their finishing position as the score. If 10 compete the winner will be in the middle of the range 1-100 i.e. 50.Second place will be between 100-200 i.e. 150. 3rd will be 250, and so on up to 10th who will be 950. Therefore thebetter the result and the bigger the fleet then the lower the score and the handicap attained for the event. The Rankingis the handicap result achieved after an open, and is not accurate for a helm until at least 3 results have been recorded.The ranking is calculated thus:- If the score for a result is less than the current rating i.e. they have performed better thantheir rank, then half the difference between current rank and the score is subtracted from the rank to give a new rank. Ifthe score is worse than the current rank i.e. performed worse than their rank, then one tenth of the difference betweencurrent rank and the score is added to the rank to give a new rank. Therefore the rank goes up quicker than down.

Hmm... clear as mud to me, but then I’m not Stuart Jones... who manages the handicap rankings and amazingly appearsto be at the top...!

The 2000 Contender Worlds were held in the smartfacilities at Medemblik, Holland from 13th to 18thAugust, attracting 107 boats from as far away asAustralia and N. America.

The practice race was sailed on the Sunday with 10knots of breeze and was ominously won by GabrielWicke of Germany. It was more notable, however, forBernard Shapley being crashed into by a powerboat,cutting his centreboard and rudder off flush with thehull, but somehow leaving the hull intact. Back ashore,he was just happy to still be alive. The moral of thisstory is, when driving anything, always look in thedirection of travel!!

Despite the forecast promising force 4-5 withthunderstorms, the two Monday races were sailed inaround 2-11 knots with a stable direction but withmany holes in the wind. Surprisingly, there was notmuch place changing in the top ten. In the first raceStuart Jones (GBR) did well in avoiding the holes topick his way past early leader Andy Potter (GBR) towin followed by Australian Arthur Brett, in only hissecond season in contenders, and Ian Renilson (GBR).

After a recall, in the second race, the left side had morebreeze allowing Graham Scott (GBR), Giovanni Bonzio(ITA), Nigel Walbank (GBR) and Wicke to arrive in thefirst bunch at the windward mark, gleefully trapezingin, while those on the right suffered. Scott managedto maintain his lead to win with defending championAndrea Bonezzi (ITA) in second. Renilson and Brettfollowed home.

On Tuesday races 3 & 4 were sailed in near perfectconditions with the wind picking up to around fifteenknots, if a little shifty. This was combined with blisteringsunshine. What could be better.

In the first race Bonezzi dominated with a big leadafter the first beat. Renilson, who had been second atthe mark, slipped to third behind Wicke who nearlycaught Bonezzi, due largely to good upwind speed.Scott finished well up only to find that his start hadbeen a bit too good, joining a select bunch countingOCS.

The second race of the day saw Scott back on topfighting his way through a group of boats that hadchosen the left corner, in opposition to the majority.Once in the lead, he controlled the fleet well, leading60 year-old contender legend Keith Paul (GBR) to thefinish. Wicke and Bonezzi followed home, securingsecond and first overall. Renilson’s 16th still made himthird overall. Brett slipped from yesterday’s overall lead,scoring a 21st and a 12th. With only one discard innine races consistency was critical.

On Wednesday only one race was scheduled andsailed in about 15-18 knots of wind with a short, steepMedemblik chop. After a shifty first beat Bonezzi,Renilson and strong-wind specialist Tim Holden (GBR)

were just ahead of the fleet. Bonezzi lost his lead onthe second upwind leg to Holden, who showed goodupwind speed. After the run, both Holden and Bonezziwent right leaving the left to Renilson who picked upa nice shift to win the race by a good margin. Holdenstayed second ahead of Bonezzi chased by Potter andWicke.

On Thursday the gusty conditions reached 20 knotswith fine sunshine. Race 6 was initially led by SebastianMunck (GER), but he was overtaken on the reaches byBonezzi and Wicke. Bonezzi lost his lead on the secondupwind leg. His claims for redress due to having a fishon his centreboard were, of course, consideredseriously. Renilson lost third place while he wasswimming after a bad tack. Wicke had good speed allround and won the race with a good margin leadingin Holden and Bonezzi.

In race 7 Bonezzi had a long lead at the first windwardmark, but he was again overtaken at high speed byWicke on the last beat. Bonezzi tried to get back bystarting a tacking duel, but was too slow for Wicke.This time he didn’t even try the fish excuse. Renilsonfinished third with Scott fourth.

Coming into the last day Bonezzi was now only 2points ahead of Wicke, while Renilson was a distantthird but not out of the reckoning. But with 2 races togo and only one discard, the championship was stillopen.

In the first race of the day Bonezzi managed to coverWicke close enough so that he finished 12th. Renilsongot a fifth, keeping him in with a chance to win. Up atthe front Potter found the breeze to his liking beingchased hard by Richard Batten (GBR) who’s Europeanpractise tour has seen him improve steadily. Holdenfollowed up in third, now putting a good seriestogether.

In the final race Bonezzi had a few incidents after thestart leading to a 720 which put him back in the fleet.Holden and Jones had a large lead after the first roundbut Wicke, recovered well after a bad start, workinghis way up to finish second behind Holden with Jonesjust holding third from the pack.

Combined with Bonezzi’s 17th place, 2nd was enoughto win Wicke the championship by two points and anevening swim in the harbour.

Renilson kept his third place and the masters trophyby finishing 6th in the last race.

Ann Seidel (GER) won the lady’s title from Trijnie Dijkhuis(NED).

The junior t it le was won by 18- year old WolfJeschonnek (GER) sailing his homebuilt boat.
