The class of 2016 is made up of many exceptional students, each contributing something unique to West War-wick High School. Naturally, it takes a lot to be ranked number one among such a group. Valedictorian Faye Gauthier has had her sights set on the top spot since she got here four years ago. She saw that she was at the top of her class during freshman year, and she worked to keep that status all four years. “Seeing that I was at the top … motivated me to keep working,” she said one recent afternoon after one of her exams. The road to success (whilst avoiding the fate of the worm) was

not easy. Juggling schoolwork, an active social life, and sports seems at times an impossible feat, but she did it. “Alotofitdefinitelyhastodo with support from my family,” she

Managing school, extracur-ricular activities and a social life can be a lot of stress for students. Michael Villanueva, this year’s salutatorian, shares his opinion about the struggle of juggling a busy schedule on his way to ending high school as the second ranked student in his class. “Sometimes it’s really
hard. I play tennis, so especially in the spring, that’s when it’s the hardest,” he said. “Matches can last anywhere from 5 p.m. to sometimes 7 or 8. I think the best thing that works for me is to remind myself to stay focused and putmygradesfirstbeforeanythingelse.” Students have to push themselves to be at their best. While family support is vital, suc-cessful students create goals for themselves. As Villanueva says: “I think school’s the best environ-ment to really push yourself and

Gauthier From PAGE 1said. “(I) surrounded myself with a lot of people who were doing the same thing.” Gauthier says sports helped her excel and make many friends. In addition, tournaments and other sporting events have provided the op-portunity for Gauthier to meet many people around the state with the same interests. After graduation on June 10, Gauthier plans to major in architectur-al engineering at Worcester Polytech-nic Institute (WPI). She gives special thanks to her parents, and she insists she would not have gotten to where she is without them. Her teachers also had some-thing to do with it. “Every teacher I
had shaped me a little bit more and shaped me into who I am, and I would not be where I am if not for them,” she said. Even with the support, being valedictorian came down to hard work. “I spent many nights up late working, butitwasdefinitelyworthit,” said Gauthier, who focused on what she could control and let the rest take care of itself. After all, she could not control how hard the rest of her class worked or how many students there were. She will bring that focus to WPI, where she will compete on the track team as she did in high school. Said Gauthier: “You can only control how well you do.”
Photo By Chris GauthierGauthier excels in track and field. Above, she throws the hammer at the Mt. Pleasant Invitational last month.
Villanueva From PAGE 1challenge yourself and do your best.” Villanueva did not have a job in high school but he played a lot of tennis and was a member of
last year’s Division III Champion Tennis Team and this year’s team, which lost only once during the regular season. He was also very active in his church. All the activi-tiesmadeputtinggradesfirstdif-ficultattimes,buthefounditwasalways the best way to go. While in his sophomore year, Villanueva found out he was ranked second. “I was really, really excited to see where I stood and I was happy to be at least in the top two,” he said. Being valedictorian had been one of his goals since middle school and he worked really hard throughout his high school career. Once he found out he was Salutato-rian, he was very proud of his great accomplishment and he feels “like our valedictorian really deserved it because she worked just as hard if not harder than I did.”
Once Villanueva graduates he will attend Brown University where he will major in engineer-ing.Hehopestofinishafouryeardegree then hopefully go to a graduate school. He would like to thank his parents for always push-ing him, he shares, because “they were always a big driving force” in his educational career. For any student who hopes to be valedictorian or salutatorian Villanueva believes the biggest piece of advice is to focus on yourself and keep working hard. While he was salutatorian he “kept on worrying who was else was in thetopfiveandwhatclassestheywere taking, especially the AP and honors classes.” However, he learned that focusing on himself and striving to do his best was all he could do. In the end, it turned out to be good enough.
