PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to April! Later this week is the

112th anniversary of Casey Jones famous wreck in Vaughn, Miss on April 15, 1900.

It looks like our events for the year are on track including our operating session at the Model Railroad Museum

at Balboa Park. The dates are posted on the calendar. Our annual Father’s Day Weekend Meet is set for the Saturday before Father’s Day. Tables are for sale already so see Tony Tarantino. This is a great pre-summer meet.

I was able to attend the Southwestern Division monthly meet in Arcadia on April 1st. It looked like a good turnout with a good selection of goodies to be had. I found a few pre-war flyer cars I had been looking for.

Due to teaching and volunteering aboard the Midway in the Overnight Experience program, my restoration projects keep moving forward at

Smoke Units This month’s How-To Clinic once again presents a subject that every model train enthusiast will be interested in knowing how to do. Mike Wheeler will be back with us to explain and demonstrate the proper and effective way to service and, if need be, replace MPC era smoke elements. This is a continuation of last month’s How-To where Mike covered postwar steam engine smoke elements. Another don’t-miss Clinic.

CLINIC START TIME: 5:15 PM Come to the Meet and support your Clinics! And as always if you have any ideas for future Clinics make sure you pass them along to Jim Weatherford . He would love to have your suggestions.

two speeds right now - Dead Slow and All Stop. I’m still working on some prewar restorations and my portable layout, which will hopefully make its debut at the Father’s Day Meet. Once the initial layout is operational, I will be looking for other members to build Hollow Core Door Modules to match mine to show off your collection of whatever your train passion is, be it Coal Accessories, Lumber Accessories or even Ceramic houses (Dept 56, LeMax or even Wal-Mart).

I want to again thank the ladies for providing snacks at the Meet. Some of us attend between work and dinner it does help tide us over.

For those who do not already know, Southwest has moved the Fall Cal-Stewart Meet from Pasadena, its home for 39 years, to Ontario. The venue is far better than the Pasadena Convention Center with better facilities for parking, loading and unloading. For most of us the difference in travel time is negligible. As a side benefit, Ontario Mills, the Outlet Mall is not too far down the road.

See you Thursday Evening.

The dates for this years event are November 2, 3, & 4 and the venue will be the Ontario Convention Center. Increasing costs at the Pasadena Convention Center lead to a search of venues capable of handling the Cal-Stewart November Meet. You will find several articles from The Southwestern Limited March/April Newsletter providing all the details for this big change on pages 10 & 11.

San Diego Model Railroad Museum Photo Exhibit – Richard Steinheimer SD & AE Railway Tribute 1948-52 - Richard Virgil Dean Steinheimer was an American railroad photographer, often called the "Ansel Adams of railroad photography." His work has been published in Trains Magazine, Railfan, Locomotive and Railway Preservation, and Vintage Rail, and more than seventy books. Until his recent passing he lived in Sacramento. A pioneer in railroad photography, Steinheimer lived through and documented the railroads' heyday and their transition to diesel motive power from steam.

SDRMM currently has an ongoing display of Richard Steinheimer’s photographs of the San Diego & Arizona Eastern RR (The Impossible

Railroad) taken between 1948-52. It’s a tribute that’s definitely worth viewing.

Model Railroads of Southern California’s Thirtieth Layout Tour - takes place on Saturday, April 28. This will be a free self-guided tour of eleven layouts at eight locations in south Orange County. Three layouts are appearing for the first time on the group’s tour program.

By scale there will be six HO scale layouts, two N scale layouts and one layout each in O standard, On3 and On30. This is a free event and you may bring relatives and friends.

For a complete detailed list of all the layouts please see page 9.

San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railroad – A new soft cover book is available on the history of what has come to be known as “The Impossible Railroad”. It describes the dramatic ups and downs of construction and operation of the San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway, covering the time period from surveys in the early 1900s to today. The story is told in both narrative form and with more than 200 vintage photographs and other unique images. The book is available online, but if you can wait we hope to have with us at the June All Day Meet author Ms. Reena Deutsch who will be selling signed copies of a book that every San Diego RR aficionado will want in their collection.

Train Station Watches Were Just the Beginning If you were in the market for a watch in 1880, would you know where to get one? You would

go to a store, right? Well, of course you could do that, but if you wanted one that was cheaper and a bit better than most of the store watches, you went to the train station! Sound a bit funny? Well, for about 500 towns across the northern United States, that's where the best watches were found.

Why were the best watches found at the train station? The railroad company wasn't selling the watches, not at all. The telegraph operator was. Most of the time the telegraph operator was located in the railroad station because the telegraph lines followed the railroad tracks from town to town. It was usually the shortest distance and the right-of-ways had already been secured for the rail line.

Most of the station agents were also skilled telegraph operators and that was the primary way that they communicated with the railroad. They would know when trains left the previous station and when they were due at their next station. And it was the telegraph operator who had the watches. As a matter of fact they sold more of them than almost all the stores combined for a period of about 9 years.

This was all arranged by "Richard", who was a telegraph operator himself. He was on duty in the North Redwood, Minnesota train station one day when a load of watches arrived from the east. It was a huge crate of pocket watches. No one ever came to claim them.

So Richard sent a telegram to the manufacturer and asked them what they wanted to do with the watches. The manufacturer didn't want to pay the freight back, so they wired Richard to see if he could sell them. So Richard did. He sent a wire to every agent in the system asking them if they wanted a cheap, but good, pocket watch. He sold the entire case in less than two days and at a handsome profit.

That started it all. He ordered more watches from the watch company and encouraged the telegraph operators to set up a display case in the station offering high quality watches for a cheap price to all the travelers. It worked! It didn't take long for the word to spread and, before long people other than travelers came to the train station to buy watches.

Richard became so busy that he had to hire a professional watch maker to help him with the orders. That was Alvah. And the rest, as they say, is history.

The business took off and soon expanded too many other lines of dry goods. Richard and Alvah left the train station and moved their company to Chicago -- and it's still

there. IT'S A LITTLE KNOWN FACT - that for a while in the1880's, the biggest watch retailer in the

country was at the train station. It all started with a telegraph operator: Richard Sears and his partner Alvah Roebuck! Who

would have thought?

Editor’s Note: Many thanks again to Jerry Ward who provided this very interesting article.

There are two kinds of replacement elements, the resistor type used in most of the steam

locomotives since the MPC era with a plastic cap and the nickel-chromium ceramic type that is similar to the original. The previous Mainline addressed replacing the original style nickel-

chromium ceramic heater element and this Tech Tip will address the resistor style heater element.

Remove the old burned out element. Pry

the metal cap off the reservoir. Use a flat blade screwdriver and pry from side to side until the cap is off.

Straighten the ground tab and remove the old element from the cap. Clean the reservoir bowl of the old pill residue and heat resistant glass

fiber lining. Line up the

resistor so the air hole is on the side of the resistor and push the cap inside the bowl. Clean a spot on the mounting bracket and solder the bare ground wire to the bracket.

The insulated wire goes to the power pickup collector

terminal (usually on the E-unit).

Test your smoke element at this point.

Attach one test lead to the smoke assembly frame and the other test lead to the insulated smoke element wire. Put 10 drops of fluid in the chamber and apply 12 volts. Check to ensure there's no short circuit. The assembly should immediately start generating smoke. Manually push the piston into the cylinder to ensure the air path is clear. When testing the resistor type, apply the power only for a few seconds; the plastic cap may get hot and distort. Don't forget the smoke gasket when installing the smoke assembly in the locomotive.

April How-To Clinic – To see “up close and personal”, as they say, how this change can be made, you need to attend this month’s Clinic where Mike Wheeler will be showing how this is done along with more additional information on how to service Lionel MPC smoke units.
