PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A message from the President of AGTTA to its membership and all those that help keep the hobby of model railroading alive.

“50 YEARS”

Our Club is racing towards 50 years of continuous

activity - 600 months, 5 decades, a half century! A significant length of train club history, ANY train club, or even any organization.

As this event nears, we need to consider what we have done and where we wish to go from here. We began as a bunch of exuberant tin-plate train collectors, not model railroaders, of maybe a couple of dozen non-retired fellows in 1969. We have expanded our membership, had many officers and leaders, and even had some members split from us to start their own club. Nevertheless, we have grown and persisted, had our stagnant times, but now, even as we are mocked by the mirror, are thriving once again.

I suspect that we are now somewhere in the midst of a cultural transformation in our hobby. We started with a narrow focus on collecting and persisted there for many years. Now, we are on the threshold of a promising future that entwines

HOW-TO CLINIC

Servicing the 2055 Baby Hudson

Jim returns to the How-To Clinic Table this month. His topic will be servicing one of Lionel’s classic steam engines, the 2055 Baby Hudson. This subject should be of interest to both operators and collectors alike. So come and learn what is required to maintain this classic.

CLINIC START TIME: 5:00 PM

new aspects of model railroading such as wireless technology and unseen wizardry with the traditional visual attractions of tin-plate charm, layout and track work challenges and the seemingly endless fascinations with long-gone favorite railroad logos and artwork.

Obviously, we see more grizzled mugs than we see pre-Gillette smooth-cheeks, which could be a cause for concern. The graybeards will move on according to fate's secret guidelines and that could leave our Club precipitously near insignificance. Our current membership is moving towards a permanent siding and we should be preparing another generation to command the main line after us.

Perhaps you may have looked around during some of our recent Club meetings to notice there are at least several (three or more) young people with their Moms, or both parents, who are excited and indulgent about this hobby of ours. They are not what I would call ''collectors'' as they seem more fascinated with railroading and its operations than with static shelf-bound displays of vintage metal toys. We collected trains and the fresh faces operate them, and so be it.

We need to talk with them and their parents and let them know that we can enhance their burgeoning involvements with this hobby, and in the long run, take advantage of our vast experiences and talents. Not only were we here first, but we have survived and we are determined to see this legacy perpetuated. These youngsters have the unique opportunity to carry on our traditions towards 100 years of AGTTA endurance, and it is our responsibility to make this effort. Some of us may still be around in 2069, but I am sure that there will be more ghosts than greeters habituating the meeting rooms and museums which our founders helped engender.

We should keep in mind the power and benefits of word-of-mouth advertising. Children tell their friends, boys and girls, how and where they have fun and what activities they most look forward too and gives them consuming joy. We sponsor free children’s raffles at our two All-Day Events, and they also receive free raffle prizes at the monthly meetings. We can do more along that line of prize-giving, but I think that talking with them and letting them know that their ideas are just as important to our Club as those of the 'veterans' is very significant to them. If they enjoy our atmosphere they will tell their friends about our really neat Club where adults actually listen to them. The vitality and freshness of youth can be a well-spring to our organization.

The Main-Line is published at the first of each month. The Main-Line is the official publication of the All Gauge Toy Train Association of San Diego.

Not all opportunities are obvious, nor can they all be realized, but these are happy, inquisitive and youthful faces peering at us right now at our very own train meets. We need to respond positively and offer counsel and the willingness to help with their questions and problems as they are the new pathfinders towards the longevity of AGTTA.

Respectfully,

Jim Andrews - President AGTTA

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

New Members – Jim is very happy to announce that we welcomed yet another new member since the February M-L report. From San Diego, we would like to extend a warm welcome to Tony Castillo. Tony, we hope you will become an active member in our Club.

Membership Renewals – Well, the renewals have continued to arrive very slowly, to slow really. Jim reports that to date he has received just 99 membership renewals. He has yet to receive renewals from 48 2016 members.

Our traditional Membership Renewal cutoff date has always been February 28th and as you know that date has passed. The Board has decided to give you late renewers one more month. If we do not receive your renewal by the April MainLine publication date, we will unfortunately have to remove your name from the MainLine mailing list. And therefore those members will not receive a copy of the April MainLine.

Since this seems to happen every year we are going to reach out to encourage these members to renew. A personal e-mail will be sent to each to let them know that they have not renewed and therefore will not be receiving any future MainLines and will not be able to get a free table at future Meets at which to sell until their renewal is received. Hopefully this will result in most sending in their renewals.

So please get that renewal to Jim before that begins happening. OK? Thanks!

CLUB NEWS

March Table Sales Limited to Paid Members – If you wish to do some Table Sales at the March Meet you will have to had to pay your 2017 Club Membership Dues prior to being assigned a table.

Meet Schedule Fine Turned – To make the Meets run smoother and to get everything in that

our busy Meets require, your Board has agreed to the following schedule for our monthly Meets.

Meet Times – The doors will open at 3 and the Meet will end at 7. The nice thing is that when the doors open at 3 the tables will have already been set up by the church staff. Thus the Hall is immediately ready for our sellers to put up their items for sale.

How-To Clinic Times – The Clinics will start at 5 and last until 6. We’ve learned that a good hour is needed for the majority of our Clinics.

Club Business Presentation – This portion of the Meet will begin at 6. It will be immediately followed by the Show & Tell and then the Raffle.

How-To Clinic Now in Separate Room - Our Clinics are now being held in a separate room just off the Big Hall. The Hall can get a tad noisy as we go around making deals and talking with friends. The room gives us a quiet space with lots of seating for conducting the Clinics.

February How-To Clinic Another Big Success – We would like to extend a BIG “Thank You!” to Larry Pearson for presenting a most informative workshop on how he uses tools and chemicals to clean and restore the various metals used in toy trains. It was an outstanding Clinic, for sure.

OUR NEW MEETING LOCATION

February Silent Auction – We are very happy to report that the Silent Auction of the Die-cast cars and trucks went very well, with all available lots being sold. We will have another set of lots available at the March Meet.

Again, bids will be placed between 3 & 6 pm. Multiple bids are totally acceptable. At the end of the auction, the highest listed bidder gets the lot upon payment of their bid.

All proceeds will go to benefit AGTTA.

February Train Sales – We are also very pleased to report that all five of the classic trains (which had been generously donated to our Club) that we had for sale at the February Meet, sold. This made for a very handsome deposit in our Club Treasury. Special thanks to all the purchasers.

April Meet Date – Please note that due to a church scheduling conflict our April Meet will take place on Wednesday, April 12.

June All-Day Meet Lunch – With Cheryl Lyman still recuperating from foot surgery and not available to host the June Meet, Jon Everett has stepped up and volunteered to take over responsibility for the lunch at the Meet. Jon is thinking of having Sloppy Joes and Hot Dogs and a couple of side dishes. He would like to ask if there are any Club Members who would like to donate a side dish for the lunch. It would certainly be appreciated. Please reach out to Jon if you might be interested in helping out.

AGTTA 50th Anniversary Is Coming – Believe it or not in June of 2019 your Club will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Yes, 50 years! Quite an achievement, for sure. We would like to celebrate this momentous occasion with something special. And we are asking you guys and gals for your

ideas as to what that could be. So, put on your think caps and give this some thought. Please let any Board Member know of any ideas you might come up with. And Thanks!

GATS SHOW ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS

Thanks to Bob Wall who sent along the following report on the recent Del Mar GATS show.

For those who were not able to attend the Great Train Show held at the Del Mar Fair Grounds on February 18th and 19th the AGTTA multi-gauge layout was setup and turned out to be one of the most popular in the hall. Providing a great opportunity to advertise the club’s June Open House Meet and solicit new members, the layout was continuously surrounded both days with amazed onlookers at the CARS Radiator Springs display, operating accessories and the many variations of trains running.

I believe the most popular attraction in the hall this year was a Thomas and Friends layout that Marshal Carpenter and Spencer Wood set up. Kids were able to participate and operate trains with hands on remote controls. Each child

was allowed five minutes to select and run either Thomas or James engines and to take home a free toy. A donation bucket was available and many parents showed their appreciation as many of the layouts in the hall were so high that the smaller children couldn’t even see or enjoy them.

Also the club supported “Motormen” Brian Liesberg and Kristian Tristan set up and operated a dual loop “HO” layout that got a lot of attention and questions with the younger crowd as it was just the right height for them to view.

This successful event was primarily accomplished by and thanks to the following members who showed up for the setup, operated trains, dismantled it and returned it for storage and repairs till our next run at Balboa Park in May.

Steve Pierce, Mike Quigg, Bart Grey, Bob Shaw, Marshal Carpenter, Cheryl Lyman, Jon Everett, Brian Liesberg, Kristian Tristan, Al Keil, Bob Wall, Tony Tarantino, Tim Lewis, Happy & Martha Flohe, Gary Butzke, Warrie Leeke, Caroline and Christine Poindexter.

RICHARD THOMSON MEMORIAL

CHILD TRAIN SET GIVEAWAY

Kai – The GATS Child Train Set Winner

Once again at the Del Mar GATS show, Marshal Carpenter and Cheryl Lyman gave away another Child Train Set Giveaway, in memory of Richard Thomson. Here is a picture of Kai, who had the winning ticket. Do you think he’s going to be enjoying this set? We sure think so. This is just a small way for some of our members to give back to the children and spread the joy of our wonderful

hobby. Special thanks to our sponsors Lionel LLC and members of AGTTA.

BOARD MEETING REPORT FEBRUARY 28TH

The Board held its third meeting of the year on Tuesday, February 28th at the SDMRRM in Balboa Park.

BOD Attendees: Jim Andrews, Dave Campbell, Jon Everett, Bart Grey, Bob Hatton, Bill Hohnhorst, Ed Jones, Rebecca Jones, Steve Pierce, Bob Wall, & Jim Weatherford.

BOD Absentees: Bob Shaw, Greg Smyth, and Ken Steele.

Visitors in Attendance: Caroline Poindexter and Christine Poindexter.

The Board of Directors meeting commenced at 6:30 p.m.

1. Great American Train Show (GATS) – The consensus was that our participation in the event was very successful. It included our regular 5-Rail Layout modules, the Test Track, the Dog-Bone Layout, a display by the Motormen, the Door Central Layout, and the Train Set Give-Away organized and raffled by Marshal and Cheryl. On Saturday Bob Wall donated a set for a 2nd Train Set Giveaway. The public feedback was very positive. Thanks to all the members who came out and helped with the setup, operation and takedown.

2. 5-Rail Module Layout – There was discussion on the need to do some work on the 5-Rail Layout. It was agreed that the one 8’ section should be replaced by two 4’ sections, which will facilitate ease of transport and installation. And there are some wiring issues that need attention. Bob Wall agreed to set up some dates in March to work on these concerns.

3. 501c3 Donation – Die-Cast Donation Sales – Sales of Wendell Callahan’s donation to the Club of approximately 2,000 die cast vehicles has been going very well. Of the 70 lots created 35 have already been sold. More will be available at the March Meet.

4. 501c3 Donation – Tinplate Standard Gauge & ‘O’ Gauge Trains – This group of donated trains was made available at the February Meet and all were sold, making for a nice deposit to the Club Treasury.

An inexpensive timer for station or streetcar stops and accessory intermittent power can be fashioned from an electronic timer card taken from an electric toaster, a DC relay, terminal strip and wire. Toasters may be obtained for a few dollars from a thrift shop. The toaster will have an electronic timer if it does not latch up when the power cord is not plugged in. This occurs because the electronic timer drives a DC magnet which performs the latching and requires the power plug to be plugged-in. When the timer times out, the dc voltage goes to zero and the toast pops up. Many of these circuit board cards work at toy train voltages since the 120 VAC input is reduced down to about 20 VAC through the heater coil.

Once the circuit board is removed from the toaster, you will have to connect the wires that used to operate the latching magnet to the coil of a DC relay so we can control the power to the station block. 12 VDC relays with one or more normally open and normally closed contacts are available from Radio Shack or discount electronic parts stores for only a few dollars.

The timer circuit shown in the wiring

diagram works as follows: When the train/streetcar completes the AC

circuit with its wheels on the isolated side rail, the timer starts energizing the DC coil which opens the

normally closed contact taking power off the isolated center rail and the train/streetcar stops. When the timer completes its countdown, DC power to the relay goes to zero causing the normally closed contact to close. The isolated center rail is re-energized and the train/streetcar moves from the stop position. When the train completely leaves the isolated track position the timer resets and is ready for the next sequence. Multiple stops can be controlled from the same timer circuit with parallel wiring.

Similarly, the timer can be configured to intermittently power or interrupt the power to an accessory, initiated by a train passing over the isolated side rail section. See the second schematic which operates as follows:

When the train completes the AC circuit by passing over the isolated side rail section, the timer starts, energizing the relay which opens or closes a contact that powers the accessory. A normally open or normally closed contact on the relay is chosen depending on whether power on or off is desired. Note that a secondary normally open contact is placed in the isolated side track lead which closes when the train initiates the timer and thus keeps the timer going after the train passes the isolated section and until the timer times out. When the timer times out, this contact will open and the circuit will be ready for the next initiation.

The length of the blocked section of track in front of a station depends on the speed of the locomotive and how far it coasts once power is removed. We blocked three sections of track when running a #60 trolley at about 12 volts.

A third possibility is to retain the magnet to drive a mechanical device. The electro magnet is fairly strong.

The pictures shown here of the modified toaster circuit board have a relay and a small terminal strip mounted for ease of wiring. You can, of course, mount the relay and terminal under the layout and run wires from the circuit board to them.

STATION / STREETCAR STOP & ACCESSORY TIMER By Jerry Stipanov & Jim Weatherford

Typically, the timer circuit is varied through the use of a 10,000 ohm variable resistor (pot) in series with a 4700 ohm resistor. When the pot is set to zero, the bread is lightly toasted and when set to 10,000 you get burnt toast. Even set to zero, the timer goes about 75 seconds and that is unacceptable for toy train station stop operation. A more acceptable time is achieved by reducing the 4700 ohm resistor down to about 260 ohms resulting in a 12 second stop; much more acceptable for our impatient passengers.

You can easily change the 4700 ohm value to 260 ohms by placing a 275 ohm in parallel with it. I just combined a couple of 550 ohm resistors (had them in my junk drawer) and soldered them across the 4700 ohm resistor.

This is an easy project if you have basic soldering and wiring skills and won't break the toy train bank.

February Board Meeting Report

Continued from Page 5

5. 501c3 Donation – New Possibility – Jim Andrews announced that he was going to be looking at another possible donation to the Club, that being an HO collection

6. Monthly Meet Schedule Changes – Some fine turning of our Meet Schedule was discussed and agreed upon. The official start time will be 3 pm. That will be when the doors open. (Remember that the Hall tables will be set up by church personnel prior to 3 pm doors opening.) The How-To Clinic will now start at 5 pm with the business portion of the evening starting at 6 pm. That will be followed immediately by the Show & Tell and then the Raffle. The Meet will officially end at 7 pm.

7. 5-Rail Modular Layout Run at SDMRRM Set – The dates for our Spring Run at the SD Model RR Museum has been set for May 22nd through June 5th.

8. AGTTA 50th Anniversary – In June of 2019 the Club will be celebrating a momentous occasion, the 50th Anniversary of the founding of our Club. The Board feels that we should have something special made to celebrate this achievement. It was agreed that we should reach out to the membership to ask for their ideas on what they would like to see.

9. Club D&O Insurance In Place – It was announced that the Club now has in place Directors and Officers Insurance, a requirement of being a non-profit organization.

10. Kobey’s Swap Meet – We have not heard from the folks at Kobey’s whether they wish to have us back again, but the consensus was that if they ask us back we would agree to having at a max, two events, one in July and another in December. And that they would be for one-day only, vice both days.

11. Portable Microphone for the Meets – It was agreed that we need to have some sort of microphone and speaker for our monthly Meets. The church has a system, but wish to charge us if we use it. Jim Andrews will look into what is available and the costs involved.

12. June All-Day Meet – Cheryl Lyman, who has done an outstanding job of preparing our lunches at the last several All-Day Meets, is still recuperating from foot surgery and will not be available to host the June Meet. Jon Everett has stepped up and volunteered to take over responsibility for the lunch at that Meet.

13. Membership Status – Jim Weatherford reported that renewals have been coming in quite slowly. He had received 96 renewals with 51 yet to renew. It was agreed that members who have yet to pay their 2017 dues would not be assigned a sale table at the March Meet.

14. Club Member Health Concerns – We have been made aware of a number of our members who are dealing with health issues. Greg Smyth will be asked to send out Get Well cards on behalf of the Club.

15. Next Board Meeting Date – Our next Board Meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 4th at the SDRRM. Board Meetings are open to all members who are invited to attend.

The Meeting was adjourned at 8:05 PM.

Lego Layout Opens in S-Gaugers Showcase Window Lego-mania has invaded the San Diego S-Gaugers clubhouse at Grossmont Shopping Center in La Mesa (CA). An operating layout built entirely of Lego materials “somewhat close to” s-gauge scale occupies a prominent Showcase Window at the mall site. The display, presented by San Diego’s L Gauge Museum, brings to three the number of model railroad layouts that can be viewed 24 hours daily and operated with a exterior button. Mall visitors are challenged to locate characters from “The Lego Movie” that populate the exhibit. This collaboration between San Diego S-Gaugers model railroad club and Balboa Park’s L Gauge Museum supports LEGO community members in promoting the history of the LEGO toy and creations using these materials. The layout will remain on display indefinitely. San Diego S-Gaugers clubhouse is open to the public at no charge each Tuesday and Saturday noon-6:00 p.m. at Grossmont Shopping Center. Members operate their personal and club-owned model trains on a 21-foot by 29-foot modular layout that is constantly evolving. S-gauge adheres to a 1:64 scale, with locomotives, rail cars, buildings and other components at a size that sparks the imagination of kids of all ages. Child-level push buttons operate the Showcase Window layouts and accessories along the main layout, turning a visit to the site into an interactive experience.

Mall Layout Expanding Expansion of the club’s 21- by 29-foot modular layout at Grossmont Shopping Center in La Mesa

(CA) has moved from the planning stage to initial construction. Modification of some interior partitions of the club’s facility will permit the layout to grow to an expected 21 by 49 foot size. The expansion is expected to be completed by the end of April.

Club members recently started an upgrade of a section of the main layout featuring authentic and replicas of 1940-60s era Gilbert accessories, some featuring push-button operation by children. And a “somewhat close to s-gauge” layout, built entirely of Lego materials, is operational in a third Showcase Window of the club’s mall facility. The Lego layout is provided by San Diego’s L Gauge Museum.
