Subatomic Particles

•Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons.• Protons, neutrons, and electrons

are made up of smaller particles called quarks and leptons.

Quarks

• A member of subatomic particles that interact with strong forces that are believed to be the fundamental constituents of matter.

• Quarks associates with one another by a strong force to make protons and neutrons.

• Quarks are 14.156 times bigger than a lepton

Leptons

• Particles such as electrons that don’t participate in the strong interactions and are not seen within the nucleus

Murray gell-man

• Dr. Murray Gell-man, was born on September 15th, 1929 in New York city

• Dr. Gell-man attended Yale university at age 15, he obtained his B.S. at Yale in 1948 and his Ph.D. in 1951 at the Massachusetts institute of technology

• In 1952 he became a member of the institute for advanced study, during 1952-53 he was a instructor at the university of Chicago, from 53-54 he was assistant professor and in 1954 he was appointed associate professor for research on dispersion relations

Dr. Murray Gell-man’s work

• Dr. Gell-man found that particles such as a proton or neutron, are composed of fundamental building blocks, that he named “quarks”, with very unusual properties.

• In 1959 he was awarded the Dannie Heinemann prize of the American Physical Society.

• Dr. Murray Gell-man is one of today’s most prominent scientists.
