The Mallard Issue 281 February 2015
King’s Lynn’s Bus Station is Getting a Makeover The bus station in King’s Lynn is being refurbished and the pedestrian links between
the town centre, the bus
station and the railway
station improved to
give people arriving in
town by public transport
a more positive first
impression.
Improved access and
lighting, wider pavements,
more shelter and real-
time travel information
will all add up to a better
experience and, once
complete, the whole area
will become a smoke-
free zone.
This £1.6 million project has been funded by £500,000 each from Tesco and Sainsbury’s
with the remainder coming from the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk
and Norfolk County Council. The project started on 6th January and work should be
finished by mid June.
To enable works to take place, from 9th March 2015, southbound services will arrive
and depart from Portland Street. Full details of the services affected will be available
on the Borough Council’s website www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/busstationworks
We know that this will cause a bit of inconvenience but please bear with us and keep
up to date by subscribing to e-alerts at the website link above or by following

PARISH COUNCIL MATTERS
Parish Council Report – January meeting Seven councillors attended the meeting of the Parish Council on 19th
January. Also present was County Councillor, John Dobson, Borough
Councillor, Mike Tilbury, four parishioners and the Clerk.
Various items of correspondence were dealt with and all out-
standing accounts were sanctioned for payment.
There was a lengthy discussion regarding parking on the green
at the junction of Weasenham and Castle Acre Roads. The
dangers of parking on the road were acknowledged. Reference
was made to a recent serious incident where a number of vehi-
cles had been damaged. Fortunately, no injuries were suffered.
It was agreed to organise a meeting of residents, Councillors
and the Police so that further consideration could be given to
this matter.
The Budget for the year to 31st March 2016 was submitted and
it was agreed to leave the individual household contribution to
the Precept at the current figure. There would be a small decrease
in the Central Grant.
Parishioners are reminded and requested to clear up the excre-
ment of their dogs and to place the bags in the bins provided.
(Please see articles below and on page 9) Any local people looking for housing in the village need to be
registered with the West Norfolk Home Choice Scheme. Hastoe
Housing Group will advise the Parish Council when their af-
fordable homes become available and the information will be
passed on by giving details in the Mallard.
The next meeting will be on
Monday 16th February 2015 at 7.30 pm
DOG POO-BAGS! PLEASE DO NOT PUT
YOUR DOG MESS BAGS IN THE
LITTER BINS AROUND THE GREEN
There are special receptacles
for this and it is very unpleasant
for the volunteers who empty
the bins to have to deal with
several bags of dog excrement YOU WOULDN’T LIKE IT
SO WHY SHOULD OTHERS?

Strollers...... A Cracking Walk! Sunday, 4th January, dawned bright and
frosty; perfect for a New Year’s stroll.
Eight strollers and a stately black standard
poodle set off from the Well for a two hour
stroll around Little Massingham.
The lanes were rather treacherous with ice
but fortunately we all managed to keep on
our feet. Once we had left the roads and
walked through Home Farm the going was
easier and some of us practised the ancient
art of puddle stomping to crack the ice, this
being one of the main aims of the Strollers
when walking with new-comers. We saw
very little wildlife on our walk, (possibly it
was all hiding as a result of all the shoots
recently!) except for occasional sight of
hares, some of which were already indulg-
ing in boxing matches (please don’t shoot
them).
Arriving back at the pub and joined by non
-walkers we enjoyed a Sunday lunch and
the annual Strollers Quiz. Our next walk
should be on 15th
February, weather and
illness permitting. Andrew Bickerton
PLEASE BEWARE!
BURGLARS ARE ABOUT
We had a report recently from a family,
living in Station Road, regarding a burglary
at their property. This sort of event is very
distressing for anyone, as in this case, and
the family wanted to make everyone in our
two villages aware.
The burglary is believed to have taken
place between 5 and 6.30 pm. Entry was
made by forcing a door to the conservatory
at the back. The intruders were not deterred
by the barking of the family dog from a
room inside although it is thought they
left, in the end, because they were worried
about the attention the dog’s barking might
be attracting.
The house was completely ransacked. Items
taken included some gold jewellery and
cash whereas electronic goods like i-pads,
that could be traceable, were left alone.
Advice from the police is to not keep gold
items and cash in places where they can
be easily found. Be sure to report any suspi-
cious events to help solve these crimes.

‘COMMUNITY CARS’ GO THE EXTRA MILE
The Great Massingham Community Car Scheme just keeps growing. End-of-year sums
tell us that, in 2014, our 55 hard-working drivers took 9 % more trips that in 2013, which
was itself a record year. December was the busiest month ever with 490 trips taken. Most
of these trips take passengers to nearby hospitals, surgeries, shops, hairdressers, clubs etc.
However, the Scheme has recently taken-on some more unusual assignments. For exam-
ple, when a patient needed daily medical treatment at Cambridge, a small team of drivers
responded magnificently by taking the passenger and partner to King’s Lynn Station
every day for 6 weeks and returning them home each afternoon. Another regular commit-
ment has recently been made by one of our drivers to take a football-mad school boy
home following after-school practice sessions. When a former driver and his wife asked if
we could take them to Herne Bay to spend Christmas with their daughter, one of the
Scheme’s drivers was more than happy to take them and bring back even though this
meant driving over 600 miles all-told.
The Scheme normally assists passengers with one-off local trips but from time to time it
can accommodate more unusual requests for help. Of course, a busy and flexible car ser-
vice needs willing drivers. Consequently, we are always looking for new people to join
our team. If you are able to spare a few hours each month driving for the Scheme
please ring the Office (01485 520 823) and ask for further details and an application
form. Enrolment is straightforward and accepting invitations to take trips is optional.
Drivers are put in touch with passengers by our Office Co-ordinators, Angie Durrant,
Christine Warnes and Linda Swallow. Linda has recently replaced Diane Brown who had
been a co-ordinator since the start of the Scheme 11 years ago and to whom we are very
grateful for helping to build a friendly and dependable service. We have also said farewell
to Ann Redvers-Mutton, who is relocating to Kent. Ann has been a driver from the start,
a long-standing member of the Management Committee and back-up Office Co-ordinator.
She will be much missed. Mike Jackson (Chairman) Tel: 0148 520 056

Go the Extra Yard As one of a small group of volunteers who empty our litter bins each
week I am asking dog owners to use the dog waste bins provided rather
than the litter bin. There are sufficient designated dog waste bins installed
around our village for there to be no excuse for depositing bags of dog
excrement elsewhere. There are two dog waste bins along Abbey Road
and yet some dog owners cannot be bothered to walk an extra few yards
but instead drop their dog waste bags in the nearest litter bin. We have to
deal with various unpleasant material each week but there is simply no
need for us to have to deal with dog waste as well. Andrew Bickerton

Information on Sewer Blockages from Anglian Water
Plugholes and Toilet Bowls are For Used Water Not Waste!
You might not spot the connection between fat from
your pots and plates and wet wipes but we know it
well. Our ‘Keep It Clear’ programme is raising aware-
ness of the issues.
When used fat and oil, food scraps and sanitary waste
go down plugholes and toilet bowls, they don’t disap-
pear. They go into the sewer, get stuck together and
cause a blockage.
At any one time there are 20,000 tonnes of fats, oils
and grease down there. And when the sewers get blocked, sewage and used water comes
up in our streets, around our homes and businesses and causes havoc and distress.
It’s bad for you. It's bad for the environment. It’s bad for our businesses. And it costs £7 million to clear, every year!
Recent Water Quality Testing in Post Office Pond The water in Post Office Pit was tested by Anglian last week after the spillage and
after the drain pipe into the pit had been thoroughly flushed. Quality was within limits.
Anglian will normally test standing water after such a spillage.
They will also attend on request and take samples at any time if there is reason to
believe spillage or other contamination has occurred.

GREAT MASSINGHAM PARISH COUNCIL
PLAYPARK PROJECT
The equipment provided for older children on the play park in our village is
limited and quite boring. As a result, we are endeavouring to have the area
refurbished with modern, exciting items for this age group.
Before any progress can be made, we need to provide evidence of the need for
this upgrade before we can apply for funding from various sources. If you have
children either living in the village or who visit you and think they would benefit
from improved facilities, please would you complete the form below, cut it out
as indicated and return it to :
Liz Foster, 51 Station Road, before 10th February 2015.
Many thanks.

OUR SENIOR PLAY PARK NEEDS A REVAMP
WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH OUR PLAY PARK SURVEY As you can see from the pictures below, parts of our Play Park
are badly in need of upgrading. On the reverse side of this page you will find a survey form regarding the upgrading of
the Play Park. It is very important that we get as many forms returned as possible.
We think that the project is important for all the village children but we have to prove
that it is necessary if we are to obtain funding.
PLEASE, PLEASE complete the form and return it. Thank you, Liz Foster.
Pease take the trouble to complete and return the short questionnaire overleaf.
Without your support and sufficient returns
it will be difficult to go ahead with the project. Do it now before you forget.
