‘Histry Bits’...... RABBITING STICKS Not so long ago, during the long, hot carefree months of July
and August, one of the greatest joys of being a village boy was
‘gorn up the harvest field.’
You had to have a stick. One cut from a nut bush was prefer-
able. But, even better, was one that had been in your family for
years with its ends stained black with what could only have
been rabbit blood. Rabbits were what you were after – plump
harvest rabbits that had gorged themselves on the ripening
corn.
Sadly, when I was growing up in the fifties, rabbit numbers
had been decimated by myxomatosis but there were still
enough fit and healthy ones, to give you a run for your money
across the newly cut stubble and to hang triumphantly on the
handlebars of your bike as you pedalled home.
There were some good old boys working on the farm then. I
well remember ‘Ovens’ Shackcloth jumping off the back seat
of a binder with a sack, as a rabbit that was too fast for my
young legs raced towards him. At the last minute he flicked his
sack open and the rabbit, mistaking it for a burrow, dived in-
side. As I caught up with him he handed me the sack, and giv-
ing me a wink, got back on his binder and clanked off round
the field.
I remember old Bob Abbs too. Semi-crippled with arthritis, his
special job was sharpening the binder cutting blades with a
large file. We boys didn’t like him much. He had a vicious
little terrier that would get to any rabbit faster than we ever
could. And he’d never give us one to take home.
Today, there are no binders left and combines are the size of
small houses, with their drivers locked away in air-conditioned
cabs. Needless to say, there are no boys and no rabbiting sticks
anywhere to be seen. This picture was taken in August 1981 at
Heath Farm Great Massingham. David Miller

Don’t fergit the dance up the hall this month – we’ll be there heving a gud toime. We

other Saterday Sid and Bert went off ter git us awl a Chinese from Tham’s and by the
toine they cum back we cudn’t remember who they were.
Whilst we wus under the influence we decided that wud be a gud idea ter organise a tea
party for everyone who wus alive during the Second World War. We hev put a bit in the
Mallard so mek shur yew read it and git on the list. (See below)
By the toime yew read this the children will awl be back ter schewl. We ken hev a rest
then! Next thing will be harvest festival then Halloween, Bonfire Night and then Christ-
mas. Another year gone. Dew yew keep atroshing til next month. Daisy (and Gert)

SCHOOL NEWS.....
The school holiday is drawing to a close
and everyone is looking forward with
enthusiasm to the new school year which
begins on Thursday, September 3rd.
In July, in the Summer term, the whole
school visited Hunstanton. In the picture
right you can see the children at the life-
boat station being given information
about how the station is run. It was an
excellent talk. The whole day was very
successful and enjoyable.
Also pictured above you can see how the area at the back of the school has been trans-
formed. The old mobile classroom has been removed and a new pavilion building erected
instead. The old sheds have been replaced with a new one, new paths laid and an old wall
removed. This has allowed the whole area to be opened up giving an excellent area now
for the Reception children to work outside both under cover and in the open. We hope to
hold an open day at some point so that people from the village can come and look round.
THANKS FROM THE SCHOOL GARDEN CLUB
We would like to thank all those who contributed to our group by buying our vegetables.
Your donations raised £22.50, which will buy a whole lot of seeds for next season. We
hope you enjoyed our produce which is all organically grown. Next year we hope that we
have a warmer spring so that we can share out the results of all the hard work before the
school breaks up for the summer. Thank you again. Liz, Julian, Sandy and all the gardeners

Strolling Over Massingham Heath in July and to Bircham in August
On 26th July the weather forecast was not good with heavy rain predicted but we calcu-
lated we could make the circular walk without getting soaked. Our route took us up
Greengate Lane and onto the Grimston Road. I would recommend this track for its fine
views across to the heath and the wild flowers along the way. Turning right on the Grimston
Road we then turned left onto the path opposite the Little Massingham junction. The
path then took us diagonally through a lush green field of maize. The shorter members of
our group had difficulty seeing above corn which was almost ‘as high as an elephant’s
eye’! (There are small elephants). On the way, I had doubled my total of ladybirds seen
to four. What has happened to our spotted friends this year? Part of the path was then
very uneven and difficult so we took a short cut to join the Green Road to Gayton and
headed back to Massingham as the clouds became more threatening. We finally arrived
at our destination for lunch, the Rose & Crown in Harpley, where we enjoyed an excel-
lent Sunday lunch and watched the heavy rain begin a little later than had been forecast,
thank goodness.
Our next walk was on 16th August. We met at the Well and then shuttled down to Harpley
Dams. Having safely negotiated the A148, not an easy task at the height of the holiday
season, we followed Peddars Way up a very long hill. The track provided some lovely
views which were enhanced by the morning sunshine. Brambles on either side provided
nectar for butterflies and some plump early blackberries for Strollers. Set aside and a
more sensitive approach to farming by Houghton Estate encouraged a range of wild
flowers and offered a safe habitat for insects. We passed a recent plantation of native
trees including alder, the Wayfairing Tree, Gueldar Rose and the Spindle tree. The track
had been recently cut and provided easy walking for us as we made our way to Great
Bircham. We finished at the King’s Head to enjoy an excellent Sunday lunch.
There will be no Strollers in September I’m afraid but hopefully one on 18th October.

Parish Council Report – August Meeting Eight councillors attended the meeting .
There have been problems at the allotments
with equipment damaged and theft. The
importance of allotment holders reporting
incidents to the police, as soon as they
were aware of them, was stressed.
Annual reports from RoSPA in respect of
play park and play equipment inspections
had been received with just some minor
items requiring attention.
Concern was expressed at the Government’s
plans to extend the right to buy to Housing
Associations and members will continue to
monitor this important matter.
Next meeting, Monday 21st Sept, 7.30 pm.

Warmest of welcomes and congratulations
from the Church congregation.
The year moves swiftly on. September brings the hope of an Indian summer, a
new school term and it’s time once more - can you believe it? - for a new se-
ries of Strictly Come Dancing to step out onto our TV screens, brightening the
way to that special time in December when churches are especially busy.
As I write, it appears that Autumn, the season of mists and mellow fruitful-ness, is al-
ready upon us. The harvest is in full swing and the fields are full of grain. How wonderful
it would be if all over the world the harvest was so plentiful. But, sadly, inequalities in
climate, economics and distribution mean that while some countries have a surfeit of
food, many have insufficient to sustain life, suffering drought and chronic famine and
deprivation. Relief agencies and charities throughout the world do their best to redress
the balance and many of us give generously to assist this work. Our God is a God of
abundance and, properly distributed, there should be enough for all.
At this time of year when we feel a close affinity with the land, we in the churches par-
ticularly look forward to welcoming people to our Harvest Festival services, coming up
over the next few weeks, with our schools taking a lead role. The harvest gifts - the food
items and local-grown produce we collect– are donated within our communities, where
they can do most good.
Food banks have long been highlighted in the news; according to local media there is a
surge in demand in our area of Norfolk (as in most of the UK) for their services. The
charity the Trussell Trust works in partnership with local churches and community
groups to set up food banks. Here in West Norfolk there is a food bank in King’s Lynn
with satellite branches in Hunstanton and Downham Market; there are also food banks in
Dereham and Thetford. Many people, we are told, are having to make the stark choice
between paying their bills or putting food on the table - and this must surely concern us
all. No one is immune from falling on hard times, due to redundancy perhaps or bereave-
ment or some other unforeseen crisis; it is good that we have in place robust structures
to support one another. Food banks are such a safety net and they do valuable work in
supporting people in crisis and signposting them to agencies where other, longer-term
help is available, if needed.
So, this Harvest time let us give thanks to our God of abundance for all the good things
in our lives; and may we all be blessed with generous hearts overflowing with love for
those in need, wherever we find them. Reverend Judith Pollard.

Vintage Cars Take a
Coffee Break
On Saturday, 25th
July, a huge convoy
of vintage cars
stopped off at our
village green for their
coffee break.
The cars were amaz-
ing and beautifully
restored. The owners/
enthusiasts were from
all over the country
and had met up in
Norfolk for a week-
end rally. Hope you
like the pictures.
