    Volume 1, Issue 7 April, 2013

    THE MANE EVENT

    Dear CCS Family,

I want to assure your family that CCS is a great school with outstanding teachers, staff,

and leadership. Please know that we will continue to serve you and your family well.

I know that with leadership transition there are questions. This school year has been a

very good year for me. I have enjoyed serving the families of CCS and getting to know

the students, especially those times in chapel, lunchroom, hallway, and in car-line. Please know

that the opportunity to return home to North Carolina is a very big blessing to my wife and me.

Thank you for praying for us. Thank you for being a great school family and for your under-

    standing.

The following updates will hopefully help you understand that even with transition we

are moving ahead to advance CCS.

Middle/High School Principal – we have offered contract to our top candidate. I will

hopefully be able to provide a CCS Press Release early next week.

High School Science Position – we have several candidates that we are considering

for this position and will begin interviewing candidates in the next few days.

Computer lab move – we are continuing to plan and prepare to move the ES

computer lab to the lower PC building this summer.

Science Suite – we are continuing to plan and prepare for renovations to the existing

science lab in order to have an official science suite this summer.

Media lab – we will be purchasing new computers to replace the over 5 year old

computers in the MS/HS Computer/Media Lab.

Cafeteria – I am working with church leadership in preparation for offering a hot

lunch program this coming school year, at least several days/week.

Master Schedule and staffing for next year are both almost complete.

Ms. Reedy will assume her new role as CCS Academic Dean this summer.

Thank you for your continued prayers, friendship, and commitment to the Christian school

    education of your children.

    UPCOMING GOLF On-Line AUCTION...

CCS Golf Classic On-line Auction On Monday, April 22nd we will start the bidding on a WONDERFUL selection of items that

have been generously donated to support this year’s golf tournament at Fox Den. Bidding on

these goodies is a great way to participate in supporting the CCS Athletic Program even if you

don’t golf. We are very excited about the on-line auction items. Tournament chairperson

Stephanie Koepfer and her committee have come up with some wonderful items that we hope you will

enjoy vying for! This golf tournament and the events surrounding it are the major source of funding for

our extensive athletic program. This year we fielded teams in volleyball, tennis, basketball, cheerleading,

baseball, softball and soccer involving 122 of our students– and the golf tournament provided the funds for

major upgrades in equipment and new uniforms. The golf tournament is vital to the success of CCS

athletics and athletics can be the catalyst for explosive growth at CCS.

Each day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. we will be taking on-line bids for the items listed for that day.

The items will be displayed at the CCS desk or you can take a look at the photos at

www.concordchristianschool.org or on the Concord Christian Facebook page. We wanted you to have a

listing of some of what we have so far, but check back frequently as we will be adding items as they con-

    tinue to come in!

Once you see an item you want to bid for, just send an email to [email protected] with your name,

the item you want to place a bid on and your bid amount.

We will post the high bids at 11:30 and 1:30 so you can keep up with them. The auction will end at 2:00

p.m. each day for the items listed on that day – the highest bid closest to the end time will be the winner

and you will be notified to stop by school office to pay for and pick up your item(s). We are trying to keep

it simple and fair. The one BIG item that will be bid on ALL WEEK LONG and end at 2 p.m. on Friday

will be a fabulous “Big Green Egg Grill” – the bids on that item will start at $500 and you know you want

    one!

    ELEMENTARY NEWS...

    Socks of Love

This year, third graders participated in a very special mission project for Knox Area Rescue Ministry. We provided “Socks of Love” for the

homeless in the Knoxville Area. The project entailed filling new socks with travel size toiletries for our local homeless shelter. Essentially, a recipient receives a new pair of socks (one sock stuffed inside the other) with all the goodies they might need for personal care, including the love of God shared by compassionate hearts. Kindergar-ten students joined in on the mission and helped supply additional “Socks of Love” for this ministry. The children enjoyed sharing the blessings they receive each day with others who are in need.

I tell you the truth, whatever you

did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

    ~Matthew 25: 40~

Concord Christian School has been busy this spring! On March 22, our school welcomed

over three hundred grandparents and special friends to our campus for a fun-filled day.

Students and their grandparents were treated to a host of activities including a photo booth,

campus tour, book fair, classroom visit and musical performance. One of the highlights

each year is the “Blessing of the Grandchildren” ceremony. During this special time,

grandparents are led in a prayer over their grandchildren. The prayer focuses on text from

Genesis 48: 8-16 where Israel blesses his two grandsons. The day was very successful and we look for-

ward to visiting with the grandparents again next year!

The CCS Elementary Chess Club kicked off their season beginning early April. Dr. Patton is sponsoring

the first through third grade students and Mr. Bussell, along with two of our high school students, is

leading the fourth and fifth graders. Students are being taught everything from the names of the chess

pieces to special maneuvers that win games. It’s exciting to watch the players strategize and work

together! We have over 40 elementary students involved in this club.

With each spring comes the time for standardized testing in grades 1-12. Concord Christian School uses

the Terra Nova test, as recommended by ACSI. Our testing took place during the week of April 16-18.

Thank you to all the parents who made sure students were equipped and ready.

    Blessings,

    Leigh Ledet

    WHAT’S HAPPENING AT CCS...

SPRING UNIFORM CONSIGNMENT SALE Thanks to everyone who participated in our annual Spring PPO

Uniform Consignment Sale. Over $1,600 worth of clothes were bought and sold with

100% of the proceeds going to our consignors.

GRANDPARENTS’ DAY— On March 22nd, we had the privilege of welcoming our wonderful Grandparents for their special day at CCS. A special thank you to the parent volunteers who donated

food for our breakfast and beverage tables. The grandparents had a wonderful time. Thank you also to

the students of the National Junior Honor Society for their help!

SPRING PICNIC — Over 400 students, parents and staff attended our Spring Picnic. While the rain forced the event inside, we had a wonderful evening of

food, fun and fellowship! We had seven brave entries for the Pie Eating Contest with

a large crowd gathered around to cheer them on. Congratulations to our winner,

David Ogle! Thanks to everyone who helped make the evening a tremendous suc-

cess! A special thank you to our high school and middle school students who volun-

teered their time. We would also like to thank the Stokely Family for donating the

    delicious food for the event.

I will praise the Lord, who

counsels me; even at night my

    heart instructs me.

“Remember us as we serve together”

    “The War of the Worldviews”

One of our distinctives at Concord Christian School is the teaching of a biblical worldview

in every subject area. I have been on many school accreditation visits over the years, and I

believe we do this better than most schools. Our goal is when a student leaves our halls and

ventures into another arena of his life, decisions will be made through the lens of the Word

of God. We are so bombarded with the secular worldview in every aspect of media, that if we are not grounded

in God’s Word, we easily fall victim to secularism. The importance of teaching students the biblical way of

thinking is paramount, but I fear we are losing hold as a nation of the minds of youth. As a teenager, I attended

Christian schools in high school and attended a Christian university and graduate school. I am so thankful for

that training, not only in the excellent education but also in the mentoring of Christian teachers and staff in my

early development of my worldview. A friend of mine works with CRU (Campus Crusade) at a local university.

He sent out a link that I am including in this article that really solidifies the need for teaching a biblical world-

view to our students. This article is written by an organizer of the Secular Student Alliance; an organization that

is anti-Christian and atheistic in its foundation. It’s an eye-opener to what this generation of students is being

faced with. This is a battlefield for the hearts and minds of our students. I’m so thankful God has allowed us the

privilege of working alongside parents in helping to develop young people with a Christian worldview who the

Lord will use to infiltrate secularism around us.

    From the Athletic Department...

Baseball ended their season with a loss to Anderson County in the KYS tournament. They won the first game of the tournament, along with several other games throughout the season. They play in an extremely

competitive league of 38 area schools including Webb, West Valley, Grace, Hardin Valley and CAK, just to

name a few. The boys improved steadily as the season progressed and we were proud of their perseverance

through snow, rain and many schedule changes. They were awarded medals after their last game and we hope

they will all play again next year and build on the experience they garnered this season.

Soccer is also very competitive this spring with wins against St. John Neumann, Temple and several others. Currently, CCS is third in the KISL league standings. Their complete score listing, schedule and some

photos are available on the KISL website (www.kislsports.org). They will continue play throughout the

month of April so you still have time to catch a game or two! They will wrap up their spring season with a

tournament the week of April 29th.

Softball has just started their KYS season, playing at Lakeshore Fields off Northshore Drive. The complete schedule is on the CCS website and they would love to have some lion fans at their games. They will

continue to play through May 7th, taking on teams from as far away as Claiborne County. We are currently

seeking coaches for high school JV girls and high school JV boys basketball. If you have coaching skills and

would like help out in some capacity, please let me know of your interest if you have not done so already.

The lady lions fought hard and strong Tuesday night, April 16, and won over the West Rebel-Blue. Cassie

Carter came home with the winning pitch. Ashley Penland brought herself and 3 runners in off a hit into

right field, and with smart base running the four girls scored on fielders' errors.

Kristen Overbay threw the final out from 3rd base to first baseman Lily

Horton who demonstrated a model stretch to get the final out. All of the

CCS players are working hard and loving the game of fast pitch soft-

ball. "The games are so exciting. They move rapidly and there is always

something to be thinking about," co-captain Annessa Rose com-

mented. Coach Yvonne Rose said, "Stealing bases and being able to

leave when the ball is released from the pitcher's hand requires constant

focus. One new rule involves stealing off of a base on balls so there is

very little dead ball time. The game is literally live 95% of the

time. Sliding is new, too, and all of the girls are wanting to practice on a

slip and slide to get better at that skill!"
