PREFACE.

It was at one time my intention to have printed

a catalogue of all the manuscripts in the various

libraries of the University, but, upon considera-

tion, I concluded that it would not be well for

a private individual to undertake the accomplish-

ment of such a work, unless it were published

under the immediate superintendence of the Uni-

versity authorities. A Catalogue of the Cambridge

Manuscripts by a Member of the University, would

be liable to imperfect criticism out of doors, as

proceeding from and sanctioned by the University

itself. I was unwilling to subject my Alma Mater

to the possibility of any attack being instituted

on the ground of not performing its undertakings

with proper effect; I was fully aware that I could

not effectually guard against such an attack; and

I have, therefore, preferred to offer the following

pages to the reader, as mere rough notes of a

few of the inestimable treasures, in the department

of manuscripts, which our noble and ancient

University possesses.

I beg leave to offer my respectful and grateful

thanks to the B.ev. John Lodge, the learned Libra-

rian of the University, who has always most kindly

and most liberally aided my researches among the

MSS. in the Public Library.

SELECTIONS.

TRINITY COLLEGE.

A catalogue of the manuscripts in this library was made in

the year 1697, by Laughton, and printed in Bernard's Biblio-

theca, p. 93. Gale's collection was subsequently added, but is

also found in Bernard's general catalogue. Several original

MSS. of the celebrated poet Milton are preserved in this library,

which, together with some copybooks of Prince Henry, son of

James Lj are lions shewn to visitors. This library is particularly

rich in early English literature, and the copies of Chaucer

Lydgate, Gower, &c. are extremely valuable. A large collec-

tion of Newton's letters to Cotes, principally relating to the

publication of the second edition of the Principia, is also pre-

served in this collection.

ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE.

No catalogue of the MSS. in this college has ever been prin-

ted, although numerous and valuable. They require to be

arranged by some competent person. A MS. catalogue, of

little value, is in the case, and mentions a copy of Bernelius de

abaco, in two folio volumes, which however I was unable to

discover in a brief search for it about three years since. It is,

however, almost unnecessary to observe that every facility is

afforded, even under these disadvantages, to persons engaged in

archaeological researches.

CAIUS COLLEGE.

There are many valuable and curious MSS. in the library of

this college, a catalogue of which is given by Bernard. One

very curious collection of early English metrical romances,

contains an unique copy of the romance of King Athelstan. I

believe that a catalogue of these MSS. is in preparation by the

Rev. J. J. Smith, the learned tutor of this college.

CORPUS CHRISTI COLLEGE.

A good catalogue of the extremely valuable collection in the

library of this college was published by Dr. Nasmith. In point

of value and rarity, the collection may almost be compared to

the Cottonian. Much misapprehension prevails relative to the

original regulations concerning this library, the very strict rules

now preserved not being by any means coeval with the testament

of the founder. Any alteration must, however, be made with

great caution.

SIDNEY SUSSEX COLLEGE.

A catalogue of the MSS. in this college is also given by

Bernard.

JESUS COLLEGE.

The excellent library belonging to this college has never had

justice done to it. There are several curious MSS., some of

which formerly belonged to the monastery of St. Cuthbert, at

Durham. A very curious catalogue of the books in the monas-

tery of Rievaulx, made in the fourteenth century, is also

preserved in this library. I may likewise mention a collection

of the minor poems of John Lydgate, and a Latin Chronicle

of English events from the year 104-2 to the battle of Lewes in

1264. A transcript of this chronicle is preserved in Tanners

collection in the Bodleian, No. 383.

ST. PETER'S COLLEGE.

A continuation of the Brute chronicle by Warkworth, master

of this college, in the fifteenth century, was printed by the

Camden Society, from a MS. in the college library. Bernard

has given us a catalogue of the MSS. belonging to this college.

PEMBROKE HALL.

Dr. James made a catalogue of the MSS. in the library

in this hall in 1600, which has been reprinted by Bernard.

Mr. Hartshorne has given copious extracts from a MS. History

of the college by Wren, formerly master.

KINGS' COLLEGE.

In this library is preserved a fine Latin psalter, written upon

vellum, about four spans long by three broad, accompanied

with musical chaunts, which was taken from the library of

Osorius, bishop of Cadiz, at the taking of that city in 1596 by

the Earl of Essex. Hentzer, in the account of his travels in

England in 1598, particularly describes this MS. as then being

in the library of this college. An unique copy of the curious

romance of William and the Werwolf, edited by Sir F. Madden

for the Roxburghe club, is preserved in this college.

TRINITY HALL.

There are very few MSS. in the library of this college.

The most important are described by Mr. Hunter, in his report

on the Cambridge libraries. A copy of the Epislolce Thomce

a Becket, and an early French translation of Boetius de Conso-

latione Philosophic, may also be mentioned.

THE PEPYSIAN.

This library belongs to Magdalen college, and a catalogue of

the few MSS. which it contains was published by Bernard.

Among them is a curious musical manuscript of the time of

Henry VII.

FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM.

Queen Elizabeth's Virginal Book is preserved in this Mu-

seum, together with other valuable musical manuscripts. The

Rev. Samuel Tillbrook of St. Peter's college, presented three

autograph letters of Oliver Cromwell, which have been recently-

published in the Cambridge Portfolio by the Rev. J. J. Smith.

DOWNING COLLEGE.

In this college are preserved some manuscripts relating to

Cambridge, bequeathed by Mr. Bowtell, among which is a

history of Cambridge by himself.
