Superhero Day—29 June 2020
The SEC have chosen to support Bear Cottage by holding a
Superhero Day on Monday, 29 June 2020.
A gold coin donation will allow students to dress up as
their favourite superhero, or better yet, they can invent
their own!
Students can also dress up in blue or red or with Bear ac-
cessories. Fully enclosed shoes must be worn (not slippers)
and leather shoes for practical's.
Let’s come together as a school community and support
this wonderful charity!

Relieving Principal’s Address
We are drawing to the end of what has been a term like no other any of us has experienced before. At the
start of the term, we only had a small proportion on staff on-site and an even smaller proportion of students.
We have gone through the ‘phased return’ and quickly jumped to full time, on-site learning.
I think we probably underestimated how difficult this process of adjustment would be, but we have been
able to get close to being back to normal operations.
I would like to thank everyone in the Kellyville community for your support of the school and I would also
like to congratulate all staff on their efforts in dealing with these incredibly difficult and unforeseen challeng-
es.
Additionally, thanks to the families who have been paying the voluntary contributions. We have discounted
this heavily due to the disruptions we have experienced but, even still, we know that times have been tough
so we really appreciate this support for the school.
Finally, I am able to inform you that the Executive Director has asked me to continue in this relieving role
next term.
I am certainly happy to do so and look forward to working with all the students, families and staff in this
wonderful school community.
Sincerely,
Mr Mark Burnard

Deputy Principals’ Report—Notice regarding Electronic Cigarettes
What are electronic cigarettes?
Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are battery operated devices that heat a liquid (also known as e-liquid) to produce a va-
pour that users inhale.1 E-cigarettes are also called e-cigs, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), or alternative nicotine
delivery systems (ANDS).
E-cigarettes may be shaped and coloured to make them look like cigarettes or other tobacco products like cigars, cigarillos,
pipes, hookahs, shishas and sometimes they look like everyday items such as pens or USB memory sticks.
When using an e-cigarette, the user inhales and exhales the vapour from the heated e-liquid. E-liquid contains a range of
chemicals and it may or may not contain nicotine.
Safety concerns about e-cigarettes
E-cigarettes are not risk free. They may expose users and bystanders to chemicals and toxins such as propylene glycol, glycer-
ol or ethylene glycol that cause adverse health effects, and may increase the risk of developing cardiovascular, cancer and res-
piratory diseases. E-liquids or vapour may also contain potentially harmful chemicals which are not present in smoke from
tobacco cigarettes.1
E-cigarettes are often labelled incorrectly and may contain nicotine, even when they claim not to contain nicotine. E-cigarettes
may contain high levels of nicotine, which may cause poisoning if swallowed.
Where is e-cigarette use banned under the smoke-free laws?
The Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 prohibit people from using e-cigarettes in smoke-free areas. They can use e-cigarettes
where smoking is not banned.
Smoke-free areas where people cannot smoke or use e-cigarettes are:
All schools
All indoor public places
Outdoor public places:
Within 10 metres of children’s play equipment in outdoor public places
Public swimming pools
Spectator areas at sports grounds or other recreational areas used for organised sporting events
Public transport stops and platforms, including ferry wharves and taxi ranks
Within 4 metres of a pedestrian access point to a public building
Commercial outdoor dining areas
In a car with a child under 16 years of age in the vehicle.
Using e-cigarettes on public transport vehicles such as trains, buses, light rail, ferries is also banned under the Passenger
Transport (General) Regulation 2017.

Making a Difference—The TAS Way
As an expression of gratitude for remaining safe and healthy during Covid-19, a few teachers decided to give back to
the community this Winter.
The TAS teachers collectively accumulated food and Winter accessories for the less fortunate. The items were picked by
Carevan to be distributed to the needy in our local community.
Andrew Scott from the Carevan team was thankful when receiving the packs.
He mentioned that these will be distributed to 80 people who are supported by Carevan on an ongoing basis.
The TAS team is very proud of this initiative.

Year 9 & 10 Food Technology Challenge
In our practical, Miss Gazzera gave us the challenge to create our own flavour and design concept to turn a normal va-
nilla cupcake into a unique, amazing cupcake.
Although this was a challenge, our class managed to present some eye catching and delicious cupcakes. During this
challenge we learnt lots of skills, especially time management and team work.
Our class came up with some very unique flavours like chilli and they tasted amazing.
We were all very proud of our how they turned out and we can’t wait for another challenge to tackle.
