• The overall annual divorce rate for the Marine Corps was

3.6% for FY2011. When examining the divorce rate for female

Marines, the rate has had an increasing trend since 2006 at

7.2% to the present of 9.5%, an increase of 2.3%.

• For the Marines who were divorced in FY2011, the overall

average age was 28 (Broken down: 35 for Officers and 27 for

Enlisted). 93% of divorced Marines were from the enlisted

ranks (Pvt – LCpl 17%; NCOs 52%; SNCOs 24%) (Data Source:

DMDC – FY 2011).

• In FY2011, the divorce rate for Marines with a deployment

history was 3.6%, compared to 3.7% for Marines with no

deployment history. Since FY2004, the divorce rate for

Marines with a deployment history has not been

significantly different than the divorce rate for Marines

with no deployment history (Data Source: DMDC – FY 2011).

• There was an average of 1.2 children involved in each

divorce during FY2011 (Data Source: DMDC – FY 2011).

• The Marine Corps has 8167 dual military families

• The average Marine family has 1.13 children (Data

source: TFDW –Dec 2011). For purposes of this fact

sheet, the Marine family is defined as the number of

married Marines with a child, the number of married

Marines without a child, and the number of single

Marines with a dependent child.

• The largest age group of children as categorized

below is the School-Age group (defined as 6 to 12

years) with 40,056 children. 52% of Marine Corps

children are 5 years of age or younger, compared to

approximately 42% for the other Services. (Data

• The end strength of the active duty Marine Corps

has increased since 2001 by 15.91% (from 172,735 to

200,225). Of the remaining three military Services,

the Army has experienced an increase of 16.44%, while

a decrease was experienced by the Navy of 14.44% and

the Air Force of 5.76%. (Data source: DMDC – Dec

2011, TFDW – Dec 2011).

• The Marine Corps is easily the most junior of all

the military Services. The Marine Corps has the

highest percentage of members who hold the rank of

Private, Private First Class, or Lance Corporal (39%)

(Data source: TFDW – Dec 2011). The Marine Corps

also has the highest percentage of personnel married

at rank E-3 or below.
