August, 1986 – Voters defeated incinerator
June, 1988 – Citizen Solid Waste Task Force appointed
1990 – Task Force recommends Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan
February, 1991 – Voters approve plan and funding
Also, 1991 – Senate Bill 530 goes into effect
February, 1993 – Voters approve flow control
A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN SPRINGFIELD
The City of Springfield has been looking for a solution to its solid waste management since the mid l980’s.

Mission
Our mission is to provide an Integrated Solid
Waste Management System for Springfield and
Greene County that is environmentally sound
and economically feasible which represents a
long-term solution to preserve the natural
resources of the region for present and future
generations. Springfield’s voter-approved
ISWMS is administered by the Solid Waste
Management Division of the City’s Department
of Environmental Services.
