When the inspector finally retired he was still convinced the trickster had somehow eluded him all those years.

One day the retired inspector spotted him in the marketplace and confronted him.

“Tell me what you’ve been smuggling. I’ll never be able to rest in peace until I know.”

The trickster was kind and decided to confess.

“I was smuggling donkeys.”

ATLAS #22—& Counting...It’s hard to believe this is the 22nd edition of The MARKETING ATLAS. Thanks to all the

loyal advertisers who continue to make this one-of-a-kind showcase of Seattle-area marcomm creativity and capabilities possible. The last three covers have gone to a white background for the striking graphic images that are the focus of the design. This cover acknowledges the trend toward mobile devices as a source of consumer information.

For the second year, all winners in The Marketing Awards competition are recognized in a nine-page special section in the center. The 2012 Awards competition attracted 330 entries by 95 companies and individuals and 5,086 online votes were cast—all record numbers. Many voters took time to comment on the high quality of the huge array of work displayed on the only awards site of its kind—to our knowledge.

A unique feature of this edition are the Paperbuttons in the ads on Pages 34 and 35 and in the Awards section copy. This startup by ATLAS Associate Publisher Melissa Coffman and Russ Stromberg promises to break new ground in linking the printed word and social media. All we can say for certain—at edition #22 and counting... —is that the ATLAS will continue to evolve.

The strike-through varnishing process on the cover is the work of the ATLAS printer, Consolidated Press. The process adds both enhanced visual contrast and texture to the finished product. And it’s done all in one pass, so there also are savings to be realized, along with the higher visual impact.
