The Marlpit Annual CollectionThe annual collection is here again. You should receive an envelope togetherwith your copy of the May issue and we do hope that you will feel able to makea contribution towards the cost of producing the paper. If your Marlpit delivererdoes not call, you can either drop the envelope in to the Post Office or call one ofthe Editors whose names appear at the foot of the back page and they willarrange collection.

In most years our advertising revenue plus the contributions received in theannual collection cover the annual costs. Not so in the year to end March 2009when, not surprisingly, we have experienced a drop in advertising income and anincrease in costs. We have a deficit which can be covered from Reserves but wedo need your support. Thank you.

Coltishall Parish Council have been asked to respond to the suggestion by the Prison Services that the nameHMP Bure be used for the prison on the former RAF Station Coltishall site. They have been asked to respondbefore their next parish council open meeting on the 20th April.

If you have any views on the subject name that you wish upheld please contact the parish clerk' 01508558761 or the Chairman' 737721 or [email protected] before 15th April 2009.

Editors: Somewhat late for consultation but we included it to see if any of our readers have anything to say. Please note that names are chosen so that they are not linked with specific local village names etc.

It is felt that there could be justifiable concerns in the area when we read in the media the problems at HMPrison Ashwell over the Easter weekend.

Local residents appear to have taken a fairly relaxed view over the introduction of a Category C prison in closeproximity to the villages. However, at what point does a Category C prison cease to be Category C? If what isclaimed in the press is correct, the Government have been overcoming problems with overcrowding in theprison system by introducing Category B prisoners into a Category C prison.

If such a situation was to arise at Coltishall would the general feeling be as relaxed as it appears to be at themoment? Have we been sold the broad idea of a prison on the basis that it will be Category C and thereforeshould not cause problems, only to find that the authorities will be forced to house Category B prisoners thereshortly after opening. It would be helpful if our local MP Keith Simpson raised the matter in the appropriatequarter, if only to make the decision makers aware that we are aware of a potential problem.

Information WantedI am wondering whether it would be possible to ask if anyone has any information aboutWilliam Addison VC, who was Rector of Coltishall with Great Hautbois from 1939 to1958.

I am researching his life as part of a local book on 10 Victoria Cross Holders of theBorough of Tunbridge Wells, where I live. There may be local people on the Counciland elsewhere who remember or know something about his time in Coltishall.

I am also looking for someone who might be able to take 3 photos for me and emailthem to [email protected]:

· A picture of the sign reading ‘Addison Close’ showing the wording and a bit of background to put it intocontext. Addison Close is on the outskirts of Coltishall off the North Walsham Road.

· A picture of the Church.· A picture of the desk which is dedicated to Addison, and a copy of any wording that may be attached.

I would be so grateful for any help with this. Incidentally he won his VC on 9 April 1916 at Sanna-i-Yat,Mesopotamia. I do hope that you may be able to find someone to help or put me in touch with someone whocan.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Friends of Coltishall and Spixworth Surgeries

The Annual General Meeting of the Friends was held on Thursday 26th March 2009 in the Coltishall surgery. As Mr Charlie Smith, the chairman, was unavoidably absent, his annual report was read out by the Vice-chairman, Mrs M Montgomery.

The report consisted mainly of thanks for all the support by the community atlarge and for the help provided by members of the Friends during a verysuccessful year. Table-top sales had been held in both villages, books andjigsaws are now on sale in each surgery, and a very enjoyable and profitableQuiz Night had been held in Coltishall Village Hall in March this year.

With the availability of the funds provided by these events, the Friends havepurchased the following pieces of equipment for the surgeries: a new andupdated ECG machine; two electronic examination couches (one for eachsurgery); modernisation of the defibulator and part of the annual servicing costsof the Cryo machines. A small bookcase was also purchased and installed in theentrance to Coltishall surgery for the purpose of presenting the books andjigsaws, such that they are a lot tidier and more easily viewed prior to selection. We hope that you will appreciate this as the service does provide a substantialamount of our income on a regular basis.

The accounts for the year January to December 2008 showed a nett balance of £2,212.66. Further purchases areplanned for the near future and the details of these will be made known at the appropriate times.

The serving officers of the committee were all re-elected. At the committee meeting held immediately after theAnnual General Meeting, future possible events were discussed, which included a carol service with bell ringersin November or December this year; a walking treasure hunt in Coltishall; sponsored keep fit evening orafternoon lasting not longer than two hours and a quiz night early next year. If you have any ideas which youwould like us to try, please let me know and I will put it to the committee. Finally, a special thank you from mefor making this task more pleasant!

Notes from Horstead with Stanninghall Parish Council, April 2009Co-option of Councillor: Due to the resignation of Ian Hall, with effect from 1st April 2009, we now havevacancies for two parish councillors. They will be advertised in the usual manner on the parish notice boards, but if you, or someone you know would like to be considered for nomination, please contact the Clerk forfurther details' 736725.

Police Report: Meetings have been arranged with the local police to discuss crimeprevention in the village with a particular focus on criminal damage on the Mill siteand parking violations. There is a public consultation meeting of the SaferNeighbourhood Action Panel on Tuesday 12th May at the Jubilee Hall in Aylsham at7.00pm. Although the meeting is in Aylsham, the area covered includes Horstead, soif you have any concerns you wish to bring to the attention of the team please comealong. In the meantime, if you would like to speak to anyone from the AylshamSafer Neighbourhoods Team please' 0845 456 4567.

Affordable Housing: The development is underway on Buxton Road of the 8 dwellings to be offered for rentor shared ownership to those who are presently resident in or have genuine connections with the village. Fordetails of eligibility please see the notice elsewhere in this magazine or on the parish notice boards.

Horstead Mill: This is still causing some anxiety: another lifebelt and rope had gone without trace; there hadbeen reports of late night anti-social behaviour; an incidence of anti-social behaviour on 20th March had beenreported to the police but it was not clear whether this had generated any response, or how frequently the areawas being patrolled. The parish council is to ask if the one extra police officer allocated to the area out of theextra 100 for Norfolk will be available to the village as more patrols are definitely needed.

Playing Field: The first phase of the project is near completion. Grants were in the process of being applied forwith the help of Bob Fell from Broadland District Council. The pony on springs / wobbly horse had been sentaway for a repair estimate. Repairs would cost £200 but a replacement would cost in the region of £800. It wassuggested that the repairs be authorised immediately, the cost being taken out of the money already put asidefor the play project. This means that hopefully there will be more equipment available before the end of thesummer.

It was reported that two young lads with two staffies, one brown one white, had been seen exercising their dogson the Playing Field and that someone had also ridden a motorbike on it. It was therefore necessary to put up anew notice without delay, although the present one was still decipherable, so that ignorance could not be usedas an excuse. As any intelligent person should and every responsible dog owner will know, dogs present apotential hazard to children at play. Dog faeces contain a worm, toxicaria canis which can cause blindness tothose who come into contact with it. Unfortunately even dogs which are wormed frequently will carry a traceof it and however careful you are in picking up, some of it will be left behind. Please be more thoughtful andchoose somewhere else to exercise your dog.

Greater Norwich Development Partnership: Joint Core Strategy for Broadland, Norwich and SouthNorfolk: Regulation 25: This long title refers to ongoing consultations about the future pattern of developmentin and around Norwich. As the council have already reported, two landowners have put forward land fordevelopment in Horstead, one on the north side of Frettenham Road and one on the south side of Buxton Road, where the hedge has been cut down. The council do not believe that the development of either is justifiable.Given the recent development on Mill Road and ongoing in Buxton Road the village has already met its quota. If you would like to know more or voice your opinion, please come to the Annual Parish Meeting on Friday 15th

May where you can see the maps and supporting documents and judge for yourself.

Planning: NCC: Horstead Quarry: Retention of two containers and a bunded fuel store (resubmission ofwithdrawn application C/5/2008/5008): Longwater Gravel Co Ltd. The council did not feel sufficientlyconversant with the technical details enclosed with the application to be able to comment. They neithersupported nor opposed the application.

Fly-Tipping: This is a growing problem costing both the public and local landowners a lot of money to clearup. Unfortunately it seems that the perpetrators are not local, are usually criminal gangs and make a fortune outof other people’s misery. Added to these are smaller numbers who having been turned away from the recyclingcentre, dump in sheer frustration. Either way it is illegal and dangerous. If you see fly-tipping, please report itto Broadland or to the police, with the location, time, and the registration number and make of the vehicle if youcan obtain them without putting yourself at risk.

Next Meeting: Due to unexpected circumstances the date and time of the this has had to be changed for theadvertised date to Wednesday 6th May 2009 at 7.30pm.

The Annual Parish Meeting: This will be on Friday 15th May, 7.30 pm in the Tithe Barn. Please come andfind out what the parish council does with your money, make suggestions, or have a moan!

Philippa Weightman Parish Clerk.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *News From the Bell Tower

As reported last month we are often ringing at Buxton where Tony is teaching some new ringers the skills ofbell ringing. Three members of the Coltishall Band were there once again and able to help out with ringing forthe funeral of John Barber on 4th April. He was described as a quiet countryman who got things done behindthe scenes and always with a smile.

As he was a bell ringer, his wife Shirley asked if the bells could be rung without muffles and to make a joyoussound, as the service was to be a celebration and thanksgiving of his life. Rounds and call changes were rung,as this is what he always liked to ring, and it did sound lovely, and certainly made it a celebration of all thegood things he did regarding his charity work, especially the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal for the deprivedchildren of other countries. It was requested that we rang as the funeral started, then again as they left thechurch, and one last time during the internment which somehow seemed to lift the spirits on such a sadoccasion. It was quite a long service, but we came away feeling that we had played an important part in thefuneral and that he would have enjoyed our ringing, we certainly hope so.

As you may know during Holy Week there is no ringing of bells across the country, so this gives us anopportunity to hold our Annual General Meeting. Once again everyone seemed very pleased with the team whowere elected last year, and as they were all quite prepared to carry on with their duties, the election of officerstook place. Tony Weston as Tower Captain, Chris. Hill as Deputy Tower Captain, Tony Weston as Treasurer, and yours truly as Secretary.

Many thanks were given to the members who turn up week after week and arealways ready to help out with any situation that arises, such as Dennis Moore andhis wife Jean (the maker of wonderful mouth watering cakes) also to Jenny, Trevor ,and Graham who have make such steady progress during the past year, it is all sovery rewarding to see that our efforts have paid off. We feel very lucky to haveMike Brothers back ringing again after a break, also a Mr John Nutbrown whotravels backwards and forwards to Yorkshire quite frequently but always pops alongto ring with us when he is back in Norfolk again, on Monday evenings and for theSunday service. We do like people to know how much their attendance isappreciated, and we have several visitors on a Monday practise evenings from NorthWalsham, Norwich, Buxton etc., so do please keep coming as we love to see you,the more the merrier.

On that particular note don’t forget that if you feel like taking up a new challenge, and learn a new skill, bellringing may be the answer. The exercise is very good for you (oh yes it is!) all that lovely stretching up etc.,and meeting of new faces, socially we are a very ‘Happy Band of Ringers’. It is only one evening a week, whilst you are learning, and you would be taught on a one-to-one basis, so no need to feel nervous, really Imean it! Just pop along one Monday evening from 7.30 to 9.00pm and sit and just watch what goes on, andthen decide if you would like to give it a try, you will be made very welcome.

Hoping you all had a great Easter weekend, and enjoyed all the lovely spring flowers everywhere, I will say, that is all for now, so enjoy your ringing.

Audrey Weston Secretary

The Jubilee PlayersThis last year of productions has been one of our most successful in terms of audiencescoming to see our plays and pantomimes. It is good to feel that what we do for pleasurestill gives enjoyment to those who come to watch us. We have many loyal customers whohave come regularly for many years and it is also great to see new faces amongst thefamiliar ones at each production. We work hard to vary our programme and to stretchourselves occasionally with more challenging scripts.

For the last twenty years, Charles White has looked after all the proceeds of theseproductions and has always ensured that we spend our money wisely! This year, Charleshas finally decided to retire from his role as Treasurer and all the Jubilee Players areextremely grateful for his hard work and generosity. Graham Brakenbury has bravelytaken on the role of treasurer, and he can be sure that Charles will not be far from his sideat the next production as Graham serves his apprenticeship! And don’t worry, Charleswill still be taking your money behind the bar!

Rehearsals are well under way for our Summer production, ‘See How They Run’, the delightful farce by PhilipKing. Gay Lloyd, the Director, (often to be seen followed by Brian, laden down with many carrier bags ofpossible garments), has been busy visiting costume stores and charity shops, hunting down uniforms andclerical dress to create the authentic feel of the 1940s. Just researching and discovering the changes in the styleof clerical collars through the decades has been a fascinating exercise!

The action is set in the 1940s at the home of The Reverend Lionel Toop and his ex-actress wife, Penelope.Whilst Lionel is away, events at the vicarage become confusing and complicated as a succession of visitorsdraw the wrong conclusions about things they see and the people they meet. The true stuff of farce!

Please note that our summer production this year is at an earlier date: Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th June 2009,7.30pm, at the Tithe Barn, Horstead. All tickets £6. Box Office at The Forge, Horstead,' 737665.

New members are always welcome. For further information about any aspect of The Jubilee Players, pleasering our secretary, Ros Chamberlin,' 736287.

One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asks for his bill and the barber replies, ‘I cannotaccept money from you. I am doing community service this week.’ The florist is pleased and leaves the shop. When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen roses waitingfor him at his door.

Later, a grocer comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barberagain replies, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community servicethis week.’ The grocer is happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when thebarber goes to open up there is a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen doughnuts waitingfor him at his door.

Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to payhis bill, the barber again says, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doingcommunity service this week.’ The professor is very happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a ‘thank you’ card anda dozen different books, such as ‘How to Improve Your Business’ and ‘BecomingMore Successful.’

Then a Member of Parliament comes in for a haircut, and when he goes to pay his bill the barber again replies,‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’ The MP is very pleased and leavesthe shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen Members of Parliament lined up waitingfor a free haircut.

And that illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the Members ofParliament.

Vote carefully!

Big C is asking all pre-schools, primary schools andnurseries to help them raise vital funds for people withcancer. Big C will provide fun packs for the schoolsand children to use; in return all the groups involvedcan retain 25% of the sponsor money for their own use.

This is the very first year of the crawl and we hope that as many children’s groups, schools, parents andchildren as possible will join in and host a Caterpillar Crawl to make it a real success!

It’s great fun and you can get involved as much as you like! The launch week for the Crawlis 27th April to 4th May, but, of course, you can hold it any time to suit yourselves. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Musical ‘May’hem at the Railway

May sees the arrival of big musical names at the Railway Tavern as landlord David Chisnell confirms he isdetermined to make the Railway one of the leading musical venues in the area. “More and more pubs areclosing and there are becoming fewer places for local and international top bands to play in the area,” he says,“At the Railway we’re determined to do all we can to keep live music playing in our area.”

May kicks off with the return of Egypt, regularly voted top rock and blues band in the area. Led by Alan Fishwho has played with everybody from Chuck Berry to the Groundhogs and shared the stage with such musicallegends as The Who, The Rolling Stones and even The Beatles, Egypt have a wealth of musical talent that seesthem seamlessly drift from Hendrix classics to self penned Blues. Perennial favourites at the Railway, anothernight of classic Blues and Rock is eagerly anticipated.

Following on from Egypt are the excellent rock bands White Heat and Voodoo Hand whilst the 23rd sees thelong awaited arrival of top international band Tea. “We’ve been trying to get Tea over from Spain for over ayear,” explains David, “but we’ve never been able to fix a date that fits in with their tours before. To say thatthis is a date that is eagerly anticipated would be an understatement.” The month finishes with the return oflocal Punk band The Killer Tomatoes. “They’re a little different to our usual stuff,” says David, “but they’realways good fun.”

Pets CornerHave you ever noticed your dog or cat has really smelly breath?!

It is not just because they love to eat those unmentionable things theyfind in the garden, but can actually be a sign of dental infection, plaque and gingivitis.

As they get older, both dogs and cats are prone to developing a degreeof dental disease and one of the first signs is smelly breath and ayellow/brown discolouration of the teeth. As the problems progressyou may notice bleeding gums, excess dribbling or difficulty eating.By this stage it is usually necessary for the vet to have a look andoften remove diseased teeth. It is far easier to prevent these problemsand all modern veterinary practices will have good dental equipmentto descale and polish the teeth back to health - just like humandentists.

You can help your pet before it gets too far by:

1. Feeding dry food2. Brushing the teeth of dogs (honestly - it’s true!)3. Feeding treats specifically designed to encourage healthy teeth and gums4. Asking your vet for a dental check up.

Hopefully you will end up with an award winning smile on your pet and an animal that you are happy to kissagain!

From the Reverend Christopher Engelsen

Dear Friends

A very true phrase is ‘no man is an island’, which the poet John Dunn observed. We all affect one another for good or ill,and are connected in countless ways. It may be that people come from the same village, or share similar interests or views. How we treat the planet here can affect people on the other side of the globe. How we make laws or spend our money alsoaffects the lives of others. For those who believe in Christ, we are all children of the same Heavenly Father, and, even withour individuality, we are one at a very deep level.

Several events happening this month reflect our belonging to one another. Christian Aid Week reminds us of the needs ofothers with its theme this year of ‘Be the Life Blood’.

The help we can give can bring life and quality of life to many. For example, helping to fund a tailoring course rebuildsthe lives of people like Nadia Kabula, in war torn Democratic republic of Congo, a young girl whom lived in poverty withher widowed mother, but now, thanks to Christian Aid, can have her own livelihood. Christian Aid Week is from Sunday10th to Sunday 17th May, and there is a special service at Horstead Church on Sunday 10th May at 10.00am.

Thank you for your support, and thanks to all who collect for Christian Aid.

Also in Horstead, on Sunday 17th May at 11.00am we give thanks for our common heritage of All Saints’ Church. It hasnow been re decorated inside, all thanks to your help and support. Do come and give thanks for what we share and dotogether as a local community.

At Stratton Strawless the Bluebell Days provide a lovely setting to meet others, enjoy the woods and flowers, country teasand stalls, and support St Margaret’s Church.

Where is God in all these things, and in the many other activities we share? He is there as his Holy Spirit, in you, in me,connecting, releasing creative energy and love to bring us to work together, and be at one. He delights in our differentcharacters and ways, but makes us one. We celebrate this gift to us all of the Holy Spirit at the Benefice Service at St.Swithin’s , Stratton Strawless on Sunday 31st May at 10.00am. All welcome.

My best wishes and prayers.

Christopher Revd Christopher Engelsen' 737255

Thank You

As Envoy here at the Salvation Army, for 10 years plus, I would like to thank all those firstly, who have supported theArmy and myself in God’s work, secondly, those of you who have faithfully attended services, coffee mornings and sales, the Harvest Suppers, the Easter Morning breakfasts and by no means least the Lunch Club. I have felt encouraged, lifted, loved and cared for by you all.

Lastly a very big Thank You to Marion Annette, for arranging such a great afternoon at the Army on 8th April after ourlunch. The Taverham Senior Singers did us proud, and there personal rendering to me was very touching and something Iwill treasure. The gift you all gave me was also overwhelming and I thank all humbly.

I don’t think retirement is to be very restful as it stands at present, and that’s just the way I will like it.

May God bless you all as he certainly has me. With Love.

Envoy Gillian
