Ladysmith Care Community has been working diligently to develop the Meadow, our Memory Care Household. A team of staff members encompassing multiple departments has been meeting on this project. The Mission for the Meadow Household is to provide quality person centered dementia care in a fiscally responsible manner. The team has presented and participated in specialized training on advanced Alzhiemers and related dementias. This has allowed them to better understand the disease and given them tools that will assist in meeting the needs of individuals that live there. Consistent assignment of staff members is being implemented to promote better continuity of services provided. The household is undergoing personalization of the rooms of each resident to reflect each individual’s personality and background. The team also has goals of developing and implementing activities that promote individual interests. Families are being encouraged to be part of this project. If you would like to ask
questions or share ideas please contact a member of the project team. Team
members are, Sara Jenness, Nursing Director, June Fasbender, LPN, Tracy
Johnson, CNA, Dawn Fifield, CNA, Lauri Welke, Activity Aide, and Deb Fields,
Housekeeping.

Ladysmith Care Community Training Workshop
Total Quality Management – Continuous Quality Improvement Workshop
On January 14th and 21st, 2013, twelve employees representing various services at Ladysmith Care
Community completed a two-day inter-active workshop on Total Quality Management and Continuous
Quality Improvement. The workshop was held in the spacious Cameo Room of Ladysmith Care
Community. Mike and Cheryl Kelley, Nursing Home Administrators, and Cathy Haupert, RN,
Training and Development Coordinator, were the workshop facilitators.
The workshops are held every six months and address many of the challenges facing long-term care
providers. Team work, Communication, Empowerment, Resident -Choice and Resident- Directed Care
are some of the focus areas used to promote our Continuous Quality Improvement. As our Mission
and Vision Statements state, “We strive to exceed customer expectations.”
Team members’ active participation assures that the workshops are interesting and fun as well as
educational. Problem solving techniques were taught and utilized in solving an actual work place
related problem determined by each team. All participants receive certificates at the facilities’
Recognition Celebration.

Volunteer of the Month: John Lindblom John Lindblom has been sharing spiritual music with the residents of the Ladysmith
Nursing Home since 1997, and for the last 10 years he has also been singing at Lake
Manor and Rusk County Nursing Home on a monthly basis.
John fondly talks about the many friendships he has made with our residents over the
years. He remembers a special friend Bob (Nolan), who came to every performance
from the first day he played in 1997 until he passed away in 2010. John learned the
lesson of a life time with an experience he had with another female resident. The
woman was sitting with her head down, her eyes were closed and she appeared “out of
it”. John thought “I wonder why they brought her here; she’s not getting anything out
of this”. After his program, he was leaning down to put his guitar way when he felt
someone grab his hand. It was the same women. She looked at him and told him how
much she appreciated his music. The lesson John learned is never to make assump-
tions about people.
John and his wife Janet have 4 children and 13 grandchildren. He was an over the
road trucker for 35 years, at times having to adjust his playing schedule for his job.
Eight years ago, he made a career change and became a Pastor, presently serving the
Free Church in Radisson.
John enjoys performing in “Christian Hoe-
Downs”. Everyone is welcome to bring their
instruments and sing! He enjoys performing
with 2 good friends, John Mataczynski and
Vince Garcia, who join him when he per-
forms in our local nursing homes.
We are very grateful to John for his many
years of service to our residents, sharing his
music and spiritual support.

Lana’s Quilt Show
Lana Parmley presented a sampling of her quilting skills at the Ladysmith Care Center on February 22,
2013. A total of 14 items were displayed in the Cameo Room; commencing at 12:30PM.
Lana was introduced to the art of quilting by her good friend Alice Kesan in 2000, who taught her the basics
and helped obtain the proper equipment and supplies.
Within a short period of time, it was quite evident that Lana was hooked and purchased her first sewing
machine from John’s Sewing Center in Eau Claire. Shortly thereafter she joined the Flambeau Area Piece
Makers Quilt Guild and has served on various committees and elected offices. Additionally, Lana belongs to
a small group who meet in member homes in Ladysmith, Cornell, Holcombe and Chippewa Falls similar to
the quilting bees of yesteryear.
Since commencing her quilting, Lana has attended many quilt shows, retreats and workshops. On one of
her trips with her husband, they traveled thru northern Iowa where scores of barns had quilt designs
painted on their gable ends depicting classic patterns.
Lana’s keen eye for color selection and arrangement is evident in the large variety of quilts she has
produced during the last dozen years; ranging from 1930’s reproductions to Civil War era patterns. She has
made quilts with fishing themes for her son and grandson, angel and sea life quilts for her grand-daughters
and a special quilt for her husband from his old worn out western shirts.
Her sewing room is full of quilt books, tools of the trade, stashes of fabric, pattern designs and photo
albums of past work. Lana’s hobby has evolved into a true love and passion for this time honored skill.
