Welcome to the tenth edition of the 2020 Meadows Country Club Monthly Newsletter. I am excited to
write to you about our progress and ongoing work at the club. This summer has been met with many
projects across The Meadows campus, and we are seeing some results after many months of
planning.
Our beautiful Regency Room is over 50% completion with our expected finish date set for mid to late
October. The construction phase is completed. New flooring is being delivered as of this article, and
painting is now in process. We are looking forward to hosting many of our member events while
creating a space that will be a draw for our comm unity to host weddings, birthdays, parties, and
corporate events.
Our tennis center deck project is in the permitting phase, with initial plans to complete por tions of the
deck before the beginning of 2021. This project will be completed in phases due to the scope of
work. We will continue to operate and facilitate our tennis and Centre Court Lounge functions along
the way.
The Meadows golf course construction continues to move along with a target date of completion set
for the end of the year. By the time you read this newsletter, all greens, tees, and fairways should be
completed and grassed. While there is still much to do to open for the coming year, we could not be
more excited for everyone to see the finished project. Please refrain from riding or walking in these
construction zones for safety reasons. We plan to set up some viewing tours as we approach the end
of the year for all to get a preview of the project and some Q&A with our Director of Golf Course
Maintenance for the particulars on the process and design.
Our donation program has been met with much success campus-wide. Hopefully, you have been
following our "thermometer progress" for each area of our club. We are getting closer to our goals,
and on behalf of the entire club, we thank you for your support. I am humbled by the generosity of so
many of you, and if you have questions on our goals or specific areas, please direct them to me. Let's
all get involved in the Renaissance of The Meadows Country Club.
Our Grand Opening is set for January 7th. We are working diligently on our marketing plans to host
some fun events around that week to include golf, demo days and receptions. Your team here at The
Meadows Country Club (along with ICON Management and our Grand Opening committee) has put
together an extensive marketing plan to attract new members and guests to showcase the new golf
course and expose non-members to the new programming for 2021.
By now, you may have noticed that our portico at the roundabout at the main clubhouse was removed.
This construction was necessary due to the condition of that structure. We are looking into other
alternatives to replace and will keep you updated as we know more.
Our Tennis and Golf Directors have begun to put together some competitive events for our members
during the fall months. Be sure to keep an eye out for Friday's weekly newsletters to take advantage of
these. We have launched our tennis Intra-club team events and recently hosted our first Pro-Am
member golf tournament. Thank you all that are participating. More information regarding these
events can be found in this October newsletter.
I look forward to more of these events as we continue to find ways and opportunities for our members
to enjoy fun events.
On behalf of the entire board and committee members, I want to thank you for your continued support
of our club. This year has been met with many challenges, but we will overcome them by working
together to persevere during these unusual times. I hope you all are well and staying safe.
Tony Johnson General Manager
Phyllis became a full-time resident of
the Meadows in 2004 when she
retired from teaching music in New
York, Virginia, and Massachusetts.
Joining the Meadows Country Club
first as a Summer member, then
Sports, then Tennis, and now Golf,
you can find Phyllis either on the
tennis court, the golf course, the
fitness center, or at one of our many
social events.
Phyllis currently serves on the Board
of Governors, the Joint MCA/Club
Strategic Planning Team, and is the
Membership Committee Chair. She
formerly chaired the Nominating
Committee, the Ambassador
Phyllis holds the famed Wanamaker Trophy which is awarded annually to the Committee, and served on the winner of the PGA Championship. The photo next to her is Rory Mel/ray, the Easterseals/Meadows Cup winner of the c oveted trophY, which resides at his home course, Holywood Golf Committee.Club in Belfas t, Northern Ireland.
Playing a very active role in the life of the Meadows is nothing new to Phyllis. Her parents moved to Vivienda in
1978 and were early and dedicated members of the Club. Her father, Ted Scandurra, was President of the
Men's Golf Association. Her mother Sybil, an avid tennis player, who was British, felt very much at home here in
the atmosphere that Lord Taylor and the builders of The Meadows created.
According to Phyllis, her mother had a favorite seat in the grill room that gave her a clear view of everyone
coming and going, and Sybil made sure that she welcomed everyone as they arrived. Sybil was also a member
of the Daughters of the British Empire, which had a very active group in the Meadows.
Phyllis visited her parents every year as a young woman and quickly decided to live here.
She and her late husband Craig bought a unit two doors down from her parents in 2004. She had retired from
her career teaching music but was not yet ready to retire. She had added a Master of Science in School
Administration and Supervision to the Bachelor of Music and the Master of Arts in Music Education she
received earlier, so she decided to take on a new challenge.
She was hired by Sarasota County Schools to be the Assistant Principal at Oak Park School, the center school
for students with special needs. Out of the 40,000 students that Sarasota County serves, Oak Park serves the
350 students with the most severe physical, mental, and emotional disabilities.
In 2013, the Council for Exceptional Children awarded Phyllis "Administrator of the Year." In 2015-16, she was
recognized by the Florida State Council for Exceptional Children for "Outstanding Unit Leadership" from among
all the chapter presidents in the State.
Phyllis describes this as her most interesting and challenging job.
When she was hired she was told that they valued her background
in the arts since they were looking for an administrator who could
think out of the box to tackle the complex issues associated with
the disabled student population. It did not take Phyllis long to
understand what they meant. People often told Phyllis she was a
hero for working at Oak Park.
She doesn't agree. She says she was the luckiest person around
because the students taught her how to be grateful every day for
the life she was given. The real heroes according to Phyllis were the
parents and the children themselves who struggle daily with the
immense challenges of their disabilities.
Phyllis has owned three homes in the Meadows. She moved from
Vivienda to a single-family home on Everwood Run and now lives in
Sandringham Place with her partner Roger Kathman.
"My days are golf and tennis" says Phyllis. "If it weren't for
COVID-19, it would be golf, tennis, travel with Roger and
volunteering at local assisted living facilities performing music."
The furniture in her house reflects Phyllis, the musician as Phyllis, the golfer stands in the
foreground.
Phyllis cannot wait to be able to travel again. A memorable trip was taken in 2014 to visit family in Northern
Ireland who live near Rory Mcllroy's home golf course of Holywood. While at the course, the club manager
asked Phyllis if she would like to hold her country's trophy, The US Open-Wanamaker Cup recently won by
Mcilroy. The Club had just taken possession of the original while the replica was being made. She was beyond
thrilled to be holding a piece of golf history.
Phyllis is optimistic about the future ofThe Meadows Country Club. Here's her description of the Club:
The Meadows is the best full-service Club around. If you are bored here you
are not looking hard enough. We have a premiere location, great facilities, and
wonderful people. It's a very special place, a home away from home. Just take
a took at the number of Club members who are second generation Meadows
residents like me. There's Phil Boyte, the President, Ralph CernY, the Vice
President, Carol Anthony who just went off the board this year; Gwen Krivi, and
Pam Facini, just to mention a few. I can't imagine living anywhere else.
GOLF TIP
Putting is probably the most distinctive and individual part of the game. There are many different
putter head shapes, grips, the way you hold the club, lengths, setups, and techniques. Like all facets
of the game, USE WHAT WORKS. I am sure you have all heard the old saying, "There's no room on the
card for comments."
The following are some helpful hints:
1. Get a putter that feels not only good to you but also looks pleasing to your eye.
2. Get a physical putter grip that feels good in your hands.
3. Experiment with all the different ways you can hold the putter (reverse overlap, cross-handed,split grip, the claw with many variations, etc.)
4. Try different lengths and find where you are most comfortable.
5. Experiment with different setups and techniques.
6. USE WHAT WORKS. If you can stand on your head and knock it in the hole, stand on your head!

Want to improve your Tennis? Let's all take a lesson from golf!
I think we can all agree that we would like to improve our tennis game to some degree! Maybe it's
our serve, our backhand, perhaps even both. The desire to improve is fantastic; however, how we go
about this is what becomes essential!
When it comes to game improvement, I notice that golfers and tennis players differ dramatically in
one crucial area, that being "How they go about their practice sessions." A golfer will take a lesson
and then spend a few hours on the range or putting green practicing what they have learned. A
Tennis Player will take a lesson and head straight to the court to put into play what they learned.
Unfortunately, the physical learning of a new skill does not work like that. As a result, this usually
fails, and players revert to their old habits. Keep in mind that the learning of a new physical skill
takes time and patience. Trying to implement the new skill before spending time on the practice
court will ultimately lead to frustration and just doing what you have always done.
As tennis players, let's all take a message from our friends across the street at golf by implementing
practice sessions into our weekly tennis routines. We have an awesome, new Playmate ball
machine, which can be programmed to feed any shot, a combination of shots, speed, or spin that
you wish to work on your game. Hitting partners are a great, fun way to drill on specific areas of your
game. Perhaps set aside 30-minutes of your court time each week and designate it for drills.
Everyone's phone now has a video camera. Have a friend shoot a short video of the stroke you
would like to work on in your game. When reviewing the video, it may open your eyes to things you
may or may not have been doing!
Our Professional Staff at The Meadows is eager to help. For suggestions on different drills or
creative ways to work on your game, feel free to check with me, Dean, Sergiu, or Vlad. We've all been
there and know the dividends it pays!

WALKING FOR YOUR EXERCISE
So, you're not a gym person, maybe you prefer to be outdoors for your exercise, or it could be that you
are still waiting for all things C0VID-19 to improve more before returning to your gym. If any of these
reasons are why you do not utilize your fitness center, you are not alone. Hopefully, you are getting
exercise even if you aren't going to the gym. Let's talk about how to vary the exercise routine by
implementing a change in your daily walk. Consider walking with varying speeds, also known as
intervals. For example, instead of walking the same speed for most of your walk, kick it up a notch for
a set time and slow it down. It does not matter if you cannot vary your speeds much. The key is to
alter your heart rate.
Here is one way to get started by simply walking; after a few minutes of warmup (a slow to moderate
pace), push yourself for a 30-60 second interval followed by a slower "recovery speed" to bring your
heart rate down. Repeating this sequence for as little as five rounds, and you should start to improve
your cardio conditioning, and as a "bonus," help burn more calories. Work up to 20 minutes at least
three times a week. Depending on your current cardiovascular condition and how much you are
"kicking it up," the recovery time will vary. Also, remember that you should notice improvements on
how much longer it takes or how much faster you must move to elevate your heart rate. You should
even notice that your recovery time is shorter than when you first started.
Look at the log below for an example; I want to encourage you to keep track of your various workouts!
Personally, I find it more motivating to look at what I did the last time and try to improve on that,
sometimes, the improvements you get aren't as noticeable day-to-day. However, if you look back over
a period of just two weeks or more, you can see that you have improved your stats; what a great
feeling! You can apply this same interval with biking, rollerblading, jogging, or even with tennis, by
having your hitting partner hit to alternating sides of the court every shot to force more movement
from you.
Remember, one of the advantages of doing intervals is that it allows people of any fitness level to
improve. The key is to listen to your body and make sure your heart rate recovers before elevating it
again in the next round. Always consult your physician before starting this or any fitness routine!

Hello all!
We have had a great summer, and now we are looking forward to an even better fall. We're hoping to
see our members at our upcoming Oktoberfest on October 17th and ring in the beginning of our fall
season.
Oktoberfest, originally a celebration of a royal wedding, began over 200 years ago in a field in
Munich, Germany. It is now the largest festival on earth, with people coming from all over the world to
celebrate Bavarian Culture and, of course, drink beer ...
If you can't make it there, join us at Centre Court Lounge deck for our
OKTOBERFEST and enjoy the great food the culinary team is preparing,
including live music and Oktoberfest beer from our local brewery!
Renovations in the Regency Room are coming along, and with due time we
hope to have you all see the new improvements, but in the meantime, visit
us in Fountain View Lounge on Fridays as we have introduced our new
Seafood Boil! We'll also be featuring our Oktoberfest beer from Motorworks
to complement our latest special. Chef Joe is also working on a new menu,
incorporating some of your favorite specials and some classics (Liver and
Onions that everyone loves).
Joseph Albers Executive Chef
BEER Of THE MONTH This year's Oktoberfest is an homage to the more robust Marzen lager biers served in Munich during Oktoberfest in the past.
With pleasant bready aromas and a medium body, this bright amber lager boasts a lightly toasted. malty sweetness complemented by a spicy hop
character that balances its malt base and dries it out a bit for a crisp finish.
