Hypothesis
I think that Doreen, my grandmother, will have very little interaction with the televisionmedia, as she is a keen gardener and spends a lot of time in her yard but she likes to know
what is going on in the world so I think she would religiously watch the 6 o’clock news.
Seeing as she is elderly and not a huge fan of television I think she will have a lot of interaction with more traditional forms of media such as reading the newspaper, in which
she will be fully engaged, or having the radio on in the background, which she may be
partially engaged in. I think she may also read a fair amount of gardening and home/
living magazines, I doubt she would be very interested in a celebrity magazine such as

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-media-how-we-use-it-90989 2/9
‘Woman’s Weekly’ or something, as at this stage of her life she would show little interest
in celebrity affairs. I also think that not having Sky TV will limit her involvement with
television media. She also receives a lot of junk mail, so she may browse that to, keepingher involved in advertising media as she likes to find a bargain.

My Findings
Television
I have found that in relation to television, I have consumed a large amount in comparisonto Doreen. The shows I watch are more for the purposes of entertainment, such as; Jersey
Shore, 7 Days, Top Gear and other comedy sort of programmes. I also watch the News
and such, but more often than not it is because my parents have the remote. Doreen onthe other hand, consumes media more for the purposes of knowledge or current events;
watching the news religiously and other such shows. Age also is a factor in our viewing
preferences, as I am a teenager I like sport shows and reality TV, often as it is a good
talking point at school also, MTV and such, is a good way of visually keeping up withtrends and such. I have seen that my age group engage more often with entertainment
media. Doreen on the other hand watches the News and current events, as the TV being
one of her only points of contact with what is happening in the world. Rather that
checking up on what’s going on during the day, she sits down at night to see a summaryof the days events. This also relates to her generation’s understanding of our newer
portable technologies, which limits where she can access news media. When watchingTV we are often both fully engaged, on the odd occasion the TV will be on in the
background and we may glance at it from time to time.Radio
As described above, I have found that while I most commonly listen to the radio for the purpose of listening to music and general entertainment. I listen to radio stations such as;
the Edge, the Rock and Pulzar FM. Being young I like to keep up with the latest songs
and trends, the radio is a good way to stay ‘in the know’. Doreen uses the radio as a portable form of news and current events, where I have my iPod and cell phone, Doreen
uses the portable radio as a way to stay in touch with current events when not near the
TV. She uses it when out in the garden, at my house, and sometimes in the car as shedoesn’t know how to work the car radio. Once again we see that the availability of media
to Doreen is limited to the portability of her devices and understanding of them. It is
noted that a lot of her interaction with radio is background, as she has it playing whiledoing her day to day chores, etc. From this I deduce that for my generation the radio is a
source of free music for our listening leisure, whereas Doreen and people of her age use
the radio for portable media acces to new, etc.Advertisement Media
As documented in the above interview questions, Doreen claims she is uninterested by
public advertisement, and only consults advertisement media when searching for a
purchase. She does occasionally browse flyers but no more, I believe this is due to her age, at the age of 85 she is very stubborn and is not easily swayed by sales ploys and
other such techniques, if she wants information she seeks it out herself. I have found that
people of her generation are less trusting of what they are shown and like to look intothings themselves. I, on the other hand, actively engage with advertisement media, I am
an impulsive buyer, and if I see something very cheap and I like the look of it I will
probably buy it, a lot of people my age have a ‘have money, must spend’ mentality
perhaps as a result of our higher consumption of advertisement media. I do like to know
8/6/2019 The Media & How We Use It - 90989
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-media-how-we-use-it-90989 9/9
what things are going cheap, especially clothes as I frequently seek out clothing specials,
etc. I also often scour TradeMe for deals, as I am looking at purchasing a car and like to
get a feel for what they are going for. I also think that Doreen limits her advertisementconsumption as she is exposed only to the full on ads in flyers and such, whereas I can
interact with more subtle advertising on the internet, etc.
So, in summary, I have come to the assumption that the main cause of our media
consumption differing is the availability and understanding of newer portable
technologies. I have my iPod touch, with which I can access the internet and nearlylimitless media anywhere, anytime, I frequently watch TV and browse the internet. I use
facebook a lot and it often is the first place I hear about new things. Doreen, being of
elderly age, does not own or understand how to use such technologies, she gets her
information from much more traditional forms of media such as the News or newspapers. She has to schedule her activities around such forms of media due to the news being on at
a scheduled time and her newspapers only updating daily, whereas my iPod’s news apps
constantly update and are accessible everywhere. To conclude, with technology
becoming more portable and based upon your needs at an increasing pace, the older generations of today will struggle to keep up, potentially limiting their media interaction
as they are left behind with the constantly appearing new technologies. It’s about whatyou grew up with, and our elder community grew up with more simple forms of media
whereas my generation have grown up with new complex technology and have learnt to
cope out of necessity. The technological world is constantly changing and one day we to
will be left behind.
