Vestry Interviews
The Vestry is conducting 20 to 30 minute interviews with parishioners between
now and September, so that we can get to know you and you can get to know us.
We are interested in hearing your responses to the following questions:
1. What brought you to Christ the King and what keeps you here?
2. What would enrich your life here at the church?
3. How do we become a more welcoming, caring, inclusive community?
4. Given your responses to questions 2 and 3, where would you be will-
ing to invest your time?
5. What questions do you have about the Vestry’s work?
6. Do you have other questions that we haven’t asked?
Please make time to meet with the Vestry member who contacts you; copies of
these questions are also on the table in the narthex.
Delegates Needed for Diocesan Convention
Diocesan Convention is scheduled for October 12-14 (Thursday
evening – Saturday noon), in Grand Junction. Christ the King
can send three lay delegates to convention, but they must be ap-
pointed by the Vestry at their meeting on July 18. Attending the
convention is a great way to meet people from around the state,
hear nationally recognized speakers, visit displays and learn
about what other churches are doing. Please contact one of the Vestry members if
you are interested in attending.
Open Offering for July
Arvada Community Food Bank
Did you know that …
… the Arvada Community Food Bank also serves people in
parts of Westminster, Wheat Ridge and Golden?
… in May, the average income for a service recipient was
$14,625 and the total number of individuals served was
11,244?
… families can self-select the groceries they need, including fresh fruits and vege-
tables, and that the Bridges of Opportunity program provides GED tutoring?
… the Bridges of Opportunity program is expanding its services to provide emer-
gency assistance, following the closing of Inter-Church ARMS?
There are lots of reasons for us to support the Arvada Community Food Bank
through our July Open Offering. And we welcome your donations of toiletries
and non-perishable food items as well.

First United Church of Arvada, 7195 Simms St.
Looking for a way to make a difference in our neighborhood? A group of schools,
churches, and civic groups is forming a coalition to
strengthen the community surrounding Arvada High
School. A flyer is on the table in the narthex. If you are
interested in attending, please contact Rev. Becky (303-

Open Offering for August
Peck Elementary School
Thanks to your generosity in past years, Peck Elementary has all the student school sup-
plies they need for the time being. However, individual teachers have specific classroom
requests, which may be special supplies (like chart paper, which teachers have to pay for
themselves, pencil sharpeners), or field trip money. We’re not collecting specific school
supplies because that doesn’t seem to be the biggest need right now. We stocked up their
supply closet pretty good in previous years and they are all asking for funds for specific
classroom needs.
In addition, Peck will be experiencing some changes. Former Ar-
vada West High School Assistant Principal, Deb Pearce will be the
new principal and former Peck Elementary Principal, Matt Herbert
will be new Principal at Warden Elementary.
Shop with Scrip® Goes on Vacation
Starting July 23
We will be taking a break from Shop with Scrip®, our new fund-
raising opportunity, from July 23 – September 10. The final orders will be taken on July
16, with the last card delivery on July 23. Plan now to purchase the cards you need for
the next two months, and help support our work here at Christ the King … During the last
three months, we have realized $382.06. Let’s see what we can do in July.
Staff Vacations
It is that time of year when the church staff goes on vacation. Here is the schedule for the
next two months:
Rev. Becky will be out of town from Thursday, July 13 through Thursday, July
27. In case of a pastoral emergency, please contact Mary Weekley
([email protected]; 303-424-5288) during office hours (Monday – Thursday, 8:00
a.m. to 12:00 noon). At other times, contact Byron Giezentanner () or Bob Michelson ().
Andi Smith will be on vacation from July 6 through July 20. Michelle Bredine
will be serving as our musician during her absence.
Chris Linden is on vacation through the month of August.

A Story of Birth, Death, and Rebirth
Dear People of God,
Birth: This story starts a number of years ago, sometime before September, 1975. At that time, the clergy in Arvada re-
alized that there was nowhere close by for people to get counseling services. So they did what people did in those days;
they organized a group of people to begin providing these services, and the Inter-Church Arvada Resource for Ministry
and Service (a/k/a ARMS) was born. Christ the King, as well as being a founding member of the organization, has
provided substantial support for operations over the years as part of our commitment to community outreach.
After a few years later, another community need became apparent to those involved: the need for emergency assistance
with food. In 1982, five of the ARMS churches organized the Arvada Community Food Bank to begin to meet this
need. Since that time, the Food Bank has grown substantially, with the support of city and county governments, busi-
nesses, civic groups, and other human service providers. moving twice into larger facilities and gradually increasing its
staff. About three years ago, in partnership with the City of Arvada Housing Authority, the Bridges to Opportunity Pro-
gram began to provide support services for people looking to change their lives.
Death: After spinning off the Food Bank, ARMS also expanded its programs to include emergency assistance for rent,
medical expenses, vouchers for gas, and help with utility bills, as well as a reading and pen pal program for children.
But with the announcement that Ivy Malden, the Executive Director, would be retiring, we also received news that Inter-
Church ARMS in earl would be closing at the end of the month. And the immediate concern for many, including the
City of Arvada and Food Bank, was the same: How would we fill the gap left behind by ARMS?
Rebirth: In early July, I received a letter from the director of the Bridges to Opportunity Program, inviting church
representatives to attend a meeting to discuss this concern and a possible solution: Could the Bridges to Opportu-
nity Program expand to include at least the emergency assistance that ARMS was offering? As an initial step, we
met to clarify just what services ARMS had offered and to get a sense of what the Food Bank would need from us.
Although nothing is final yet, all of the parties present at the meeting were hopeful that this new effort could be
successful.
Birth … death … rebirth … it is this cycle of hope that lies at the base of our Christian faith. In this case, it took
42 years to come full circle, and can be hard to wait this long to see the results of our efforts. But God invites us
into a life of patient faithfulness, trusting that in each part of this cycle, God is present with us.
May the gifts of this summer season sustain and restore you for the work that is to come.
In God’s peace,
Becky+
Community Sunday and Parish Picnic
September 10, 9:00 a.m.
We’ll hold our annual parish picnic here at Christ the King, following worship together at 9:00 a.m.
Worship Team
The Worship Team met in June to review the Holy Week and Easter services. Of special note:
The “Hosanna” that the congregation sang during its procession on Palm Sunday really held together. When everyone
arrived in the church, we were still all singing it together!
Moving the footwashing back into the church made the whole service seem smoother and more connected, along with

having the Altar of Repose in the narthex.
Something to consider: Maybe having battery-operated candles for the Easter Vigil? There are some significant problems
with hot wax (while the candle is burning) and the wax that drips on the carpet.
Everyone enjoyed the additional instrumentalists (John Kempsell, bassoon, and Cameron Beauchamp, trumpet), who played
with the handbell choir on Pentecost Sunday. We hope to have them back again next year.
We also reviewed the worship calendar for the coming year. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 6, at 7:00
p.m. We will be planning for the Blessing of Pets (October 8), healing services (October 15), All Saints Day (November 5)
and Christ the King Sunday (November 26). We welcome your participation in our conversation.
Sunday Church School
We will resume classes on Sunday, September 17. If you are interested in teaching, please contact Chris Linden

Vestry Highlights
June, 2017
Reports received:
Based on preliminary figures, Bob DeLong reported that our income was about $5,000 short of our expenses in May,
resulting primarily from a shortfall in pledges.
Bob Mickelson noted that he and Bob DeLong have spread fertilizer on the lawns, but we really need help with trim-
ming the outside edges of the property. We are still looking into the problems with the lights in the front of the
building.
Rev. Becky reported that we have updated the bookkeeping computer and the new software is installed. Two roofing
contractors have come out to check our roofs; temporary covering is in place over the skylights. We are still wait-
ing for information from the adjuster and an estimate for roof repair.
Bob DeLong, Bob Mickelson, Byron Giezentanner and Rev. Becky met with Nana Oppong, who is doing a fundraising
feasibility study for the bishop.
Actions taken:
The Vestry revised the interview questions and divided up names.
The Vestry set September 10 as the date for the Parish Picnic.
Next meeting: Tuesday, July 18, 7 – 9:00 p.m.
Property (Fixers and Tenders)
Saturday, August 11
We will continue to work on maintaining our grounds; we have a number of areas with overgrown weeds and dead
branches that need to be removed. Please bring your tools to assist with these tasks.

Beyond our Walls
Ralston House “Endurance Challenge”, Saturday, August 5, 10:00 a.m.
Mary Beattie is interested in putting together a Christ the King team (10 people) for this .5K run/walk (something like a
total of 3 blocks). Come early for pancakes!! Registration information is on the table in the narthex, or you can sign up on
line at www.ralstonhouse.net.
Hello! We hope this letter finds you well.
We are reaching out to our area churches to share information about the Bridges to Opportunity program. The
Bridges to Opportunity program is a self- sufficiency case management program housed at the Arvada Commu-
nity Food Bank (ACFB). It was developed with five high quality program components that offer services and as-
sistance that ca n result in life changing improvements. The program components were developed in partnership
with community agencies in the spirit of collaboration and to avoid duplication of services.
Our services build on existing community resources whenever possible in an effort to educate clients on the rich
resources available to them and to encourage self- help and self-advocacy. With the recent closure of Inner
Church ARMS , the Bridges to Opportunity program would like to fill the gap as the emergency ass istance pro-
vider for the community. Our thoughts are to continue to provide help with gas, rent/deposit , utilities, and medical co
-pays/medicine purchasing assistance.
If you know others who would be interested in the program or would like additional information, please reach out
to Gretchen. Her contact information is listed below.
Thanks,

A PROGRAM OF THE ARVADA COMMUNITY Fooo BANK
Please remember to reload and use your King Soopers and/or Safeway Gift Card every time you gro-
cery shop or buy gas. We receive 4 to 5% of your purchase as a donation to
Christ the King, every time you use your card. The money from these two pro-
grams is vital to our operating budget and it is a really easy way to help support
our church. If you need to replace your card or buy a new card, call the office at
303-424-5288. Through June 2017, CTK has earned $1972.58.

We are truly blessed to have friends like you. We want to assure you that your donation will enable individuals in
the United States and around the world to step out of poverty. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and your per-
sonal involvement with our cause is tremendously important. You should be proud of your humanitarian efforts. We
invite you to keep our mission in mind, should the opportunity arise to continue to donate to our cause.

WEARING OUT POV E R T Y "
Dear Friends at Church of Christ the King,
Thank you for your generous donation of $572.00 for the Ralston House Pinwheel Garden Project in recognition of Child
Abuse Prevention Month. And THANK YOU for your hard work to Help Plant Hope by having planted a garden in April
to help children in the community. Pinwheels not only represent hope and healing for children, but our large gardens, with
1,128 pinwheels each, specifically represent the 1,128 children who received assistance from Ralston House in 2016. We are
on pace to serve even more children in 2017.Thank you for participating in our pinwheel garden project to support services
at Ralston House. Our mission is to stop the abuse and start the healing. This project is a visual reminder that hope does in-
deed bloom for children who have been affected by trauma and abuse. And your garden joins the many other gardens
throughout the community that shows the community you care about kids. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Don Moseley Executive Director
