"The pro- gram will be about the same as previous summers," commented Barry ' Zembower, director of financial aid. t £j Zembower said there woul d be Barry Zembower photo by Rich Forsgren state and federal programs in the rorms of grants an d loans; There will also be a limited amount of work-study money. The work- study money will be limited in June, but will be more available in July and August. l|p' £ "It's basically the the same as last year" Zembower continued, "the only exception is last year there was an excess windfall, that's why the spending last year." He added that the work- study will be restricted to those taking classes. > r . In addition, Zembower reflected on next year's financial aid status, "W e should be less af - fected here than at other private colleges. Next year is p retty if fy, it all depends on what they say in Washington and what'they said they'd do.'f He added that the outlook, 'does not look rosey." However, Zembower did say he was in the process of working ou t the instituti onal b udget so the ef- fect will be felt less here. He also said the cliental at Mercyhurst is unlike that at Harvard, Yale, and Perm State so they'll be hit more significantly. * I 'Hurst To Be Affected By Reagan Budget Cuts by A. Mangeri ^ Due to President Ronald Reagan's economic policies and cut- backs, Mercyhurst College stands to lose much of the government aid that it is presently receiving? ' a r. <*jk jg & -i There are at least five to six aid programs from which Mer- cyhurst receives funds. John Nesbit, assistant to the president for government affairs, said many governmen t fi nancial aid programs are either bein g cut or are in jeopar dy of be ing cut. Regulations are also being £ changed thereby affecting the availability of funds. * ]!-• i'$r'« <* . Sj According to Nesbit, some of the programs that are in jeopardy and also affect the 'Hurst are the Law Enforcement Education Pro- gram, Law Enforcement Assistance Agency, National Science Foundation, CETA fundin g, National Endowment for the Arts, and Housi ng and Urban Development monies. - ^ | Bot h the Law Enforcement Educational Program and the Law Enforcement Assistance Agency are financial aid programs that give scholarship monies to students of law enforcement. Both pro- grams will be totally cut. The National Science Foundation, which gives support to the science programs here at Mercyhurst, is threatened with cutbacks. The National Endowment for the A i ts grants and the Housing and Urban Development loans have not been made a vailable to any col leg es wh o usually use such funds., j Nesbi t said that there is no major crisis because he is seeing the money change piles, which is when money is still offered but in other areas. $ W *Nesbi t added that his experience In the government gives Mer- cyhurst an advantage over other colleges in competition for aid. Poll Examines Low Election Turnout by Chris Settlemire Mercyhurst \ Student Govern- ment held the election of officers recently and fthe turnout was below last year's 5 2 percent. This year's voting was participated in by only 43.5 percent of the col- lege's students. * *- In an attempt to find out this reason for, the low turnout the Merciad conducted a survey of 5 0 randomly selected students. Of those 5 0 students surveyed 43 did, not vote in the MS G election and seven did. ; &? « ^^Tdidrt'rTiave the^ime ttftun over to Zurn and vote," stated one sophomore wh o wished not to be named, i Another comment came from a junior, "I didn't know who some of the candidates were." These comm ents typifi ed those of the non-vot ing percentag e. Those who voted said they felt it was their responsi bilit y to vote because they considered MS G to be the voice of the students. See- ing that the officers are in charge of speaking for students to the ad- ministration it is essential fo r someone responsible to be in this position. ££* E.William Kennedy, director of student services, commented on the turnout, "Maybe the cam- paign wasn't so exciting this year, two of the races were un- contested." He added, "I would have liked 100 percent turnout, but this * percentage doesn't bother me as much as a 29 per- cent woul d h ave."
