FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Scripture: Isaiah 2:4-5Romans 13:11-14Matthew 24:36-44 Sermon:DistractedRev. Dr. Chuck Mize

That’s what we did on Sunday, November 10. We gave thanks…for the ministry of Pam Keckler. When Pam’s ministry with GCC concludes on January 3, 2020 it will have been a significant part of 25 years of our history. After 25 years, Pam’s ministry has become so intertwined with Pam’s person-hood that the two are inseparable. Rev. Eliz-abeth Hartung and I will carry the pastoral ministry of GCC forward after January 3. But we, and no one else, will ever do ministry at GCC in the same way that Pam does it. In the words of the Apostle Paul that I quoted in worship on Pam’s Sunday: We have this treasure in earthen vessels... So we give thanks for Pam as both pastor and person…as faithful shepherd and trusted friend…Pam who has borne the treasure of God’s love.

But the Apostle Paul goes on: …to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. This means that God’s people give thanks for the providence, mer-cy, love and grace that God gives us with such generosity….in earthen vessels that contain heavenly treasure. On Thanksgiving and Memorial Sunday, November 24, we will give thanks for GCC members and friends who have died in the past year by lighting a candle and tolling a bell. They are:

Rachel Owens, Gloria Riemer, Lois Peltier, Thurston Kohler, Michael Rapp, Richard Lauesen, Dianne Dehinten, Thomas Payne, James Urice, Robert Rand, L. Bates Lea, Marcia Lea, Lewis Musil, Nicholas Peters, Daniel Curran, James Ford.

Thanksgiving is traditionally retrospective. We give thanks for what has been…for precious memories…for all that has hap-pened…for abundant blessings received. For Pam, that’s a large collection. And we’re sharing it in memories and stories, in pictures and print. On the calendar, Thanks-giving comes at the end of the growing sea-son…after the harvest…as the hymn sings: All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin. For me personally at GCC, I am overwhelmed with thanksgiving as I see what you have done to make our church building a gracious, accessible and wel-coming place…and as I feel the revitalized spirit of this congregation each Sunday after worship in the Commons. God is good!

This year, I invite you to add prospect to retrospect as you give thanks. Give thanks for what is yet to be…for what it still un-seen and unrealized…for what lives in the precariousness of our hopes and dreams because of the promises of God. It’s easy to give thanks for blessings received. It’s more difficult to give thanks for blessings believed.

I served as Pastor of Samuel United Church of Christ in St. Louis from 1985-1995. Each year in this season a banner hung in Samuel’s sanctuary. Framed with shocks of wheat its message was simple, and profound:

GENEROSITY 2020 PLEDGE CAMPAIGNWe are off to a very good start, and grateful for pledges received so far. Every pledge is important to fund our community of faith. If you have not pledged yet, you will find pledge cards in the pew racks. You can also pledge by sending an email to [email protected] or contact Lucinda Fuller directly at (847) 724-2210. We lift up the names of 180 households, (including 12 anonymous) who have pledged $577,914 as of November 4. Let’s grow our community of faith!

In order to help share all of the wonderful aspects that Glenview Community Church has to offer with each other and the broader community of Glenview, each month the Invitation and Awareness Team will have simple, fun challenges we encourage all members to participate in.

For the month of November the challenge is to:

Attend a GCC sponsored event.

#COMMUNITYCHALLENGE

SPIRITUAL COUNCIL MEETING REPORT OCTOBER 22, 2019At its October meeting, the Spiritual Council talked about finances and about honoring our pastors, past and present.

TREASURER’S REPORT Through September, our financials continue to be positive. Chris reported revenues $59,000 above budget and expenses about $27,000 below budget through September, putting us about $86,000 ahead of budget. With construction complete, the Forward in Faith campaign will be focusing on fulfillment of remaining pledges.

GENEROSITY CAMPAIGN The 2020 campaign is underway, and the Generosity Team is hard at work tracking and following up on pledges. As of November 4, 155 pledges had been received, totaling $488,904.

CELEBRATING PAM Mark Miller, Pam’s favorite teacher and practitioner of sacred music, will be giving a choral workshop on November 9—all are invited to attend. He will also be participating in services November 10, when Reverend Vertie Powers will be present to release Pam from the congregation as she releases the congregation. A luncheon will follow the service.

RECOGNIZING HOWARD ROBERTS The Spiritual Council voted to name Howard Roberts as Pastor Emeritus of GCC. This honorary position recognizes Howard’s care for GCC and his devoted service as Senior Minister. It does not involve financial or other commitments on the part of GCC. Howard will be listed as Pastor Emeritus in the UCC Yearbook and recog-nized with a special worship service

WELCOME NEW AND RENEWED CONGREGANTS!We joyfully welcome 9 people who joined the church for the first time or rededicated their prior membership at GCC in October. Please greet Cynthia Avery, Sally Dickey, Susan Hayes, Elena Lazar, Kim and Andrew Lundgren, Andrea Miller, Shawna and Phillip Mooard, and their families, and invite them to share in a community that you enjoy at GCC, whether it’s music, mission, men’s or women’s groups, knitting, or whatever shines a light in your life.

THANKSGIVINGOFFERING 2019 In this season of giving thanks, please remember those who are hungry and need our support. The Thanksgiving offering will go to feed the hungry in the Chicago area. Please use the Thanksgiving envelope in this Broadcaster to send in your contribution to help feed the hungry.

To give thanks for the unknown…to trust that God will provide for us for all of our days: this is true faith. And true faith always fills us with great thanksgiving.

See you in church!

GOD MOMENTTHIS CHURCH: MY FAMILY: A THANKSGIVING THANK YOU

God moments are those times when God becomes “real” in our lives. Not as a force “up there” or “out there” but the reality that God exists in our lives in every moment. That reality is best recog-nized by its other name, “Surprise”.

We don’t cause or create God moments. But we can recognize them by their results. God moments offer an alternative way to look at a situation; or to feel differently about something or recognize a new approach to an old problem. They offer hope and new life.

The theological word for a “God Moment” is resurrection. I’ve been trying the same solution to the same problem with no success. It “occurs” to me to try something different! Or, I am feeling hopeless about a situation and something unexpected happens that offers a new strategy for living. Or, I am aware of the end of something in my life and a door opens to new possibilities.

A few weeks ago, as I thought about how much the people in this church have helped me in these years of Lew’s illness, I thought, “This Church is really my Family” – a beautiful God Moment. And my heart filled with love and tears.

So thank you, dear and special Glenview Community Church family, on this almost Thanksgiving Day, for being my family in word and deed and love. My Gratitude to God for you is as big as the world. Happy Thanks-Giving Day!

I hope you will come to Lew’s Memorial Service on Saturday, No-vember 23 at 2:00 p.m. and meet my other family.

Love, Bobbie McKay

It’s hard to believe the holidays are right around the corner! The recent snow certainly made it feel like Christmas time. We hope you’ll make plans to join us for the Christmas Luncheon, which will take place at Glenview Community Church this year.

We’ll meet in the Mayflower Room at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17.

Lunch will be served at noon, we’ll sing carols, and our favorite surprise guest has again promised to make an appearance.Donations will be gratefully accepted to offset the cost.

To reserve your space, please contact Julie Orr at [email protected], or 847-400-4695.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

CHILDREN AND TEEN FAITH FORMATION MINISTRYThe young children, teens and families of GCC have had a busy month. There are many demands on their schedules: soccer, dance, basketball, baseball, football, school, jobs, and many more varied activities fill their schedules. Balance and faith are important to this group and help to keep them grounded in God’s love.

One Sunday evening, the 8th grade confirmation class took the UCC statement of faith and Sunday papers to consider the relevance of our faith. They did a tremendous job looking at homelessness, the theology of Peanuts cartoons, and the drive and dedication of sports teams, etc. They then had some extra time in the gym. It was amazing to watch the choreography of free time. One group playing keep away, one group playing football, one group playing basketball and they just moved in the gym as one unit. These are the skills that help grow as a faith community all moving together

Church School, confirmation, FISH (faith is hopeful), PYF and 612 provide time to learn and be together in fellowship that provides grounding for children and teens. They ground themselves in faith and hope. The service and learning they participate in each month allows them to engage in kindness, empathy and sympathy for others. Spending time in fellowship and service lets children practice these important emotional skills. The volunteers and I work hard at providing opportunities for children to grow and practice these skills which are needed more then ever in our world today.

UPCOMING TEEN EVENTS612 YOUTH GROUP (6TH-12TH GRADE)We gather each Wednesday from 5:30 – 7:30 to enjoy a meal (Paninis, Pizza, or Pancakes), fellowship time and time to talk about faith and the week. We use the gym and the youth room for games and fun. We begin each week in the Mayflower room. 612 began Wednesday, 9/11. We do not meet when District 225 does not have school.

GCC GLOSSARYChurch buildings have words to describe certain areas which we may not all be familiar with, so here are a few definitions to help you navigate our beautiful space: The narthex – this is the main entrance area on the east side of the building that you enter before going in to the sanctuary. The narthex balcony is above it. The transept is the side area within the sanctuary that also has a balcony above it.
