The Messenger The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Olney, Maryland April 2018 “Easter! A Way Through” You know how many times you have said that or heard it from the lips of another? Here’s a sample of sentences. “I can’t wait to get through this wedding; its joyful work, but it isn’t easy.” I just can’t wait to get through this testing and treatment; it takes so much out of me physically and emotionally.Oh, these terrible twos are horrific; I just never believed it would be this bad. I just want to get through it;actually, so does the kid. Personally, I have said for over 40 years “I can’t wait to get through Lent and Easter, and I have heard that from more pastors than I can count. Many of you have been heard to say “I can’t wait till this vacancy is over.Count me in too. In fact, I’ve heard that phrase almost universally applied to stressful situations, positive or negative. It seems stress and its’ challenges are something we like to avoid, or at the least complain about. That might be why a long time ago I decided that one of the best way to think about Easter is that it promises “a way through.” Think about it. Spiritually, which is the way our thinking seems to go first, Easter, provides a way through all the spiritual bad guys, sin, death, the devil, the world and the flesh. Now, that’s something worth shouting about. Those are some big dead ends, if you know what I mean. Can I be a bit more practical now? Almost every time our family experienced some difficulty or hard time or challenging event, I would say, based on my theology, “we will get through this,” which being translated means, God will help us manage and find a way because we are people of faith. So, there you have it. That really is our reality. There is no way to go through or get through life, even for Christians, except to take its challenges, difficulties, situations, and circumstances in stride with the promise and hope that God gives us a way through in the resurrection. I recollect that when Peter was wondering about whether he knew the way or not, Jesus said to him, “I am the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE.” The WAY through whatever this life gives us, throws at us, blesses us with, or puts in our way. The TRUTH of God’s promise, power , and presence sealed in the resurrection for us that accompany us on our journey through the worldly truth that confronts us. The LIFE that enables us to rise above and move through times that beat us up, rob our joy, stress us out, mislead us, and even gift and bless us. Happy Easter, you know the way. Enjoy! He is Risen.

“Easter! A Way Through”

You know how many times you have said that or heard it from the lips of another? Here’s a sample

of sentences. “I can’t wait to get through this wedding; it’s joyful work, but it isn’t easy.” “I just

can’t wait to get through this testing and treatment; it takes so much out of me physically and

emotionally.” “Oh, these terrible twos are horrific; I just never believed it would be this bad. I just

want to get through it;” actually, so does the kid.

Personally, I have said for over 40 years “I can’t wait to get through Lent and Easter,” and I have

heard that from more pastors than I can count. Many of you have been heard to say “I can’t wait till

this vacancy is over.” Count me in too. In fact, I’ve heard that phrase almost universally applied to

stressful situations, positive or negative. It seems stress and its’ challenges are something we like to

avoid, or at the least complain about. That might be why a long time ago I decided that one of the

best way to think about Easter is that it promises “a way through.” Think about it. Spiritually, which

is the way our thinking seems to go first, Easter, provides a way through all the spiritual bad guys,

sin, death, the devil, the world and the flesh. Now, that’s something worth shouting about. Those

are some big dead ends, if you know what I mean.

Can I be a bit more practical now? Almost every time our family experienced some difficulty or

hard time or challenging event, I would say, based on my theology, “we will get through this,” which

being translated means, God will help us manage and find a way because we are people of faith. So,

there you have it. That really is our reality. There is no way to go through or get through life, even

for Christians, except to take its challenges, difficulties, situations, and circumstances in stride with

the promise and hope that God gives us a way through in the resurrection. I recollect that when

Peter was wondering about whether he knew the way or not, Jesus said to him, “I am the WAY, the

TRUTH and the LIFE.” The WAY through whatever this life gives us, throws at us, blesses us with,

or puts in our way. The TRUTH of God’s promise, power, and presence sealed in the resurrection

for us that accompany us on our journey through the worldly truth that confronts us. The LIFE that

enables us to rise above and move through times that beat us up, rob our joy, stress us out, mislead

us, and even gift and bless us.

Happy Easter, you know the way. Enjoy! He is Risen.

Kids and Easter!

So, what do you tell them? Tell them the story. Tell them they are in the story because Jesus did what he did to share the story with all people. Tell them because Jesus rose from the dead that death is a doorway into God’s presence not a dead end. Tell them Easter promises us that whatever happens, God is with us and God will help us get through all the difficult times we have in our lives. Tell them when the chick breaks out of the egg it reminds us that Jesus broke out of the tomb into new life. Tell them Easter is about living, life, and love right now today, tomorrow, and every day. Finally, show them that all the above is true by what you do and say all the time. Yes, you can bring them to church on Easter for a good start or continuing a great tradition.

Happy Easter,

Pastor Dave

Once again, we will have the

Whom Are You Looking At?

The disciples were thrilled. They had their Lord back in their presence once again. Since His Resurrection, He had appeared to them and others several times. They were still a little confused, though, when He talked about “waiting for the gift [His] Father promised” (Acts 1:5), and, then, “He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight” (Acts 1:9).

You can imagine their bewilderment. He had died and been buried and then had risen from the dead! He had walked among them and taught them again, and now . . . He is taken up into the clouds. No wonder they stood there – probably with mouths agape – looking into the sky where they had last seen Him.

It took “two men dressed in white” (Acts 1:10) to bring them back to their senses. “‘Men of Galilee,’” they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into Heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into Heaven’” (Acts 1:11).

Back they went to Jerusalem. Their eyes were no longer on the clouds, but they were still looking at Jesus. They waited. They prayed. They chose another disciple. And they waited some more – all the while looking at Jesus.

Whom are you looking at? Yes, Jesus has ascended. We can only imagine His joyful, triumphant return as all the hosts of Heaven welcomed back the risen, victorious Savior. Because He is that Savior, because He is the Author and perfecter of our faith, “let us fix our eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2). Through His Word and Sacraments, He will lead us in His ways; He will teach us obedience and self-sacrifice; He will teach us love for our neighbors. With joyful and generous hearts, we celebrate the new life that Easter brings us by sharing the message of the Cross and the Empty Tomb with all who will listen. Keep looking at Jesus until in Heaven you see him face to face!

Dear Members of LCGS,

We have been busy getting ready for spring and enjoying the outdoors. The playground has never felt so good.

Pastor Dave has really been “hands on” with our children. He started having “Lunch with Pastor” on Wednesday’s and children love to hang out with him. This past month he brought a lamb to school for us to pet. His lessons each week are quite engaging, and the children love it.

We are very thankful to LCGS Elders for planning “Breakfast with an Elder” each month. All members are always welcome to come and join us to mingle with SCCC families.

During the month of April, children will have an opportunity to learn about the lifecycle of a chicken. It’s a four-week hatching program. A wonderful local farm, “Rent-A-Coop,” will be providing us with fertilized eggs and an incubator. Children will observe eggs for four weeks until the chick’s hatch.

Coming up this month, both classrooms will focus on God Made the World and God Made Me! They will also continue learning their letters and learning about spring.

Happy April! Sandra Pernie

Bible Verse to Remember

Mark 16:5-7

5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. You re looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He was risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

“Before We Were Yours” Written by Lisa Wingate

This novel will absolutely break your heart. It is the tale of a family ripped apart by the Tennessee Children’s Home Society. It is unbelievable that children could be taken from their homes and sold to the highest bidder. And furthermore, that this practice was sanctioned by high-ranking officials who looked the other way. It is a true story where two families, generations apart, are forever changed. So, join us in the Family Life Wing for some Ooltewah banana pudding, a Belt Buckle moon pie or other great Tennessee specialty. There will be lots of fun, lots of good food and lots of great conversation.

A Batch of “Resurrection Rolls”

For the coffee time following the sunrise service at the Dover (DE) United Methodist Church, one creative church lady brought in a batch of her Resurrection Rolls” she had baked.

Rev. D. Karl R. Kraft asked her why she called them “Resurrection Rolls,” and she simply told him to take a bit and find out.

The roll was an ordinary looking pastry baked to a golden-brown, with no topping or frosting.

When Rev. Kraft bit into the roll, he discovered that the center was completely empty. “I get it,” he said. “It represents Jesus’ empty tomb, right?”

She said he was correct, but there was more. She then explained that the recipe begins with taking a marshmallow and rolling it in sugar and cinnamon. That represents the process that was done to prepare a body for burial in biblical times.

The marshmallow is then wrapped in dough, which represents the cloth in which Jesus’ body was wrapped prior to be placed in the tomb. When the rolls are baked, she explained, they are “essentially placed in the tomb.” During the baking process, the marshmallow disappears into the dough, leaving the empty space in the center of the finished roll – a reminder of Jesus leaving the tomb empty on Easter morning.

Joyful Noiseletter, March-April 2017

Ingredients

1 can Pillsbury Grand

Crescent Rolls

8 large marshmallows

1/4 cup melted butter

2 Tbsp. sugar

2 Tbsp. cinnamon

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°. Line a cookie sheet with

parchment paper.

Mix sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl.

Separate Pillsbury Grands crescent dough into 8

triangles.

Set out the marshmallows. Read 2 Corinthians

5:21 and discuss how the white marshmallow

represents Jesus’ purity. He was holy and without

sin. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us,

so that in him we might become the righteousness

of God.

Talk about how Jesus took all of our sins and was

crucified on the cross, so that we might be pure

and holy before God.

Instruct your children to dip each marshmallow in

the butter then roll it in the cinnamon/sugar

mixture. As they do, this read John 19:38-40. Tell

them the cinnamon and sugar represent the spices

that were put on Jesus’ body.

Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the

body of Jesus. Now, Joseph was a disciple of

Jesus, but secretly, because he feared the Jewish

leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and

took the body away. He was accompanied by

Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus

at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh

and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking

Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the

spices, in a piece of linen.

Place each marshmallow in the center of a crescent

roll triangle. Explain that the dough represents the

linen which was used to wrap Jesus’ body.

NEW MEMBERS Thank you for

Volunteering to be on the

Altar Guild

For some time now there have been three openings on the Altar Guild to set up for the 8:15 services, and thanks to Pastor Dave for asking for help for us, we now have those openings filled.

• 1st Sunday of each month will be done by Eric and Melody Wald

• 3rd Sunday of each month will be done by Gaetan and Carol Brunetto

• In months with five Sundays, that first Sunday will be done by Marianne Compton, who is also doing the second Sunday each month when she cleans up after the 8:15 service and re-sets up for the 11:00 service.

Thank you SO MUCH to those who responded so quickly. The Altar Guild people do their job so quietly and efficiently that most members don’t give much thought to what they do or when they do it. But there are now 18 members working behind the scenes to ensure the eucharist is ready, and then other members who clean up following each service. The other very faithful members on the list include:

Lora Birch Lynn Boyd

Sherrie Dean Charles Falck Dolores Falck

Kelly Groff Karen Howard

Dorothy Hughes Joyce Kubu Ken Kubu

John Maisel Pat Maisel

Dawn McCann Ann Sprague

Please take a minute to let them know their work is appreciated.

Thank you,
