From the Principal – Mr. P. Veenendaal

Our first news this week concerns our teaching staff for next year. The school board has offered a full-

time teaching position to Mr. Dave Nienhuis and he has accepted that. As most of you know, Dave left

us about 4 years ago after many years of teaching French and other subjects and working as our Vice-

Principal and Athletic Director, to teach in Fergus, Ontario. For several reasons, Dave, along with his

wife, Erica, expressed the desire to return to teach at Immanuel in Winnipeg. When Mr. Edmund

Nederveen told us that he would not return next year so he could pursue a Bachelor of Education degree

at an Ontario university, we had an opening to hire Mr. Nienhuis back. The Nienhuis’s plan to move

back to Winnipeg with their 2 youngest daughters this summer.

Other teachers will soon receive their contracts/offers from the school board. Please encourage them to

continue in their tasks here at Immanuel for the next year. We appreciate their work and we would like

to continue working with the same team that has worked well in the past. The Clarion pages are filling

up quickly with “wanted ads” so we realize that there are still many opportunities to work in Reformed

schools.

In the Messenger you will find a new student timetable for the second semester. We have had to drop a

Grade 12 Social Studies course because of a lack of enrolment, so that means we had to do some changes

in teaching assignments. Thanks to all involved with this for your great cooperation.

LIBRARY NEWS

Student-recommended: available in our school library

D-Day: Juno Beach, by Lance Goddard, combines photos,

accounts from the veterans involved, and writing by

Lance Goddard (author of several books on the

“invasion of Europe” by the Allies) to capture the heroism

and sacrifice required for the Canadian army to establish a

beachhead on D-Day, and begin the long process of freeing

Europe from Nazi domination.

Library Hours for the Rest of Us:

Students have their own library times,

but library hours for the rest of us for 2013-2014 are from

8:45 to 11:45 - Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

1. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENTS: “Helping Boys

2. DUFFERIN CHRISTIAN SCHOOL SENIOR DRAMA CLUB is putting on a production

of Anne of Green Gables by Alice Chadwicke, adapted from Lucy Maude Montgomery's novel,

on February 28 and March 1 . It promises to be an exciting production with Laura

Vanderveen starring as Anne, Autumn Gansekoele as Marilla and Quentin Vandermeulen as

Matthew. Tickets for reserved seating are available from the school secretary at 204 745 2278,

and can still be paid at the door. Rush tickets will be available for unsold seats. Ticket prices

this year are $10.00 for adults age 16 and over, $5.00 for students 15 years old and

under. There is a family ticket for $40.00 which includes parents and children 15 and

under. The venue is the Carman Collegiate in their newly renovated theatre; the time for both

productions 7:30 PM.

3. SOUP DAY: Elementary parents, please remember that Wednesday the 29th is hot lunch day. If

you child would like hot soup, please send them with a cup and spoon. Thank you.

4. I LOVE TO READ MONTH REQUEST: If anyone has a small pup tent the library could use

for decoration only for a month or so, could you please contact Juliette Dewitt @ 4445825. Thank

you."

5. ART AFTERNOON: The grade 6 students have been busy designing their murals for art

afternoon. For this event we’ll need many containers to fill with paint. If you have any large

yogurt, sour cream or other containers to donate for this activity please send them to the grade 6

classroom.

6. LOST and FOUND: Our daughter came home with the wrong coat on Sunday! We are looking

for a size 5 girls winter coat. Costco brand: Crush. Color: Blue/Green with Navy and white on the

sleeves. We have the same coat in size 8. Please call the

Voncks at 204-224-1015 Presumably it was lost at

Church during the Christmas break.

7. Mass Band Fundraiser: If you are still looking to

purchase a Show and Save coupon book or know of

someone who is, please contact the school and we will help you get one. This fundraiser will be

used to support the Mass Band Concert which we will be hosting in the spring. THERE ARE

FEWER THAN 50 REMAINING.

8. WANTED: Old electronic equipment such as computers, printers, etc. … both small and large.

Ms. Fenny Kuik dismantles and recycles valuable material from them. Please call Mr. Ralph van

Goor to coordinate your delivery of these goods.

9. WANTED: Cardboard or plastic egg cartons for crafts and painting. Please send them to school

or drop them off at the office.

The Advance College Preparation for Grade 10 & 11 Students has been rescheduled to February

13, 2014.. For those who are not able to attend but would like to view this online, there are instructions

posted online at blogs.rrc.ca/student. This will be viewable for about 1 month after the event is over.

Those who registered for the previous event are not required to register again. However, those who have

not registered need to do so by Wednesday, February 12, 2014 by visiting www.rrc.ca/advanceprep.

Just to remind you again about what this event is about:

This is a very important session for Grade 10 & 11 high school students and their parents to help prepare

in advance for college by getting started early to learn about the admission process, getting on waiting

lists earlier, starting the career exploration process, planning to register for the right Grade 11 & 12

courses, learning about student support services and also an opportunity for parents to learn about ways

they can support their children through this process to set them up for the most success later on!

GRADE 7 & 8 students KIDS KAMP @ RED RIVER COLLEGE allows students to apply to attend

one workshop to learn about electrical/electrical engineering. The sessions are held on a number of

Saturdays during February and March. Space is limited to 16 students per session so apply early.

Students were given an information package.

FORUM FOR YOUNG CANADIANS- If you are 15-19 years old and have an interest in national

politics and public affairs then this is for you! Spend one week in Ottawa on Parliament Hill! There are a

few time frames available. You are responsible for the cost but there are many bursaries available. Check

out www.forum.ca for more information and/or ask Mrs. Dykstra for an application form. ICS has had

students attend this event in the past.

THE ROTARY CAREER SYMPOSIUM has its website up and running and is inviting students to

complete some pre-event activities. There are three activities available and for each one you complete,

your name is entered to win an ipad. Check out www.careersymposium.ca.

MUSIC NOTES! – Mr. Bonefaas

This year grades 1-3 will be going to the WSO for the program “Musical Discoveries” on February 5, at

1:00 pm. Permission slips went home this week, please ensure to hand it back by January 30.

Preparations are on the way for the Mass Band Concert. We need your help in accommodating about 150

out-of-town band students, chaperones, band directors from April17-21. Please contact Bill and Henrietta

Raap if you are able to host. Also contact them if you pre-arrange(d) accommodation.

K-6 choir: Now that the Christmas Season is well behind us, we started learning music for the Easter

Program.

Kindergarten: This week we learned “Fiddledeedee” and learned how to find a “friend” to walk with.

Next week we will make the song into a clapping game with a partner. We’ll also work on the poem

“The Train.”

Grade 1-3: This week we learned about the instruments in the orchestra. We listened to examples of

what string instruments sound like, and what kind of music they play. We also learned about the different

instrument families in a Symphony Orchestra, like the WSO.

Grade 3 Recorder: The next time is February 7.

Grade 4: This week we learned “Kookaburra” which is an Australian Folk song. We learned to play the

rhythms on instruments and sang the song at the same time. Next week we’ll learn “I’ve been to London”

and play a clapping game.

Recorder: We had recorder this week, the next time we have recorder is February 14.

Grade 5

This week we learned “Hot Potato” and played a game. Next week we’ll add instruments to this song.

We’ll also learn “I’ve a Car.”

Grade 6:This week we continued with Rhythm Composition, and put actual note value to the beat we are

playing. Next week we’ll learn about “Mood” in music and how it is created.

ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM NEWS: Kindergarten – Mrs. Nyhof

We had another full week and most of it spent indoors due to the weather. This week we had a special

guest, Constable Dow (Lilliana’s dad) in our classroom to teach us about police work in our community.

Thank you for sharing your work and all of the tools you use to help keep us safe. Please keep on

practicing your address and telephone number with your child. It is important safety information. We will postpone our community helper dress up day to a day in Feb. as we plan to continue this unit

into Feb. Remember that there is no school on Friday. Elementary teachers will be busy getting the

school decorated for “I Love to Read” month. It is an exciting month that all of the students look forward

to each year.

Grade 1: Mrs. Heidema Slowly but surely we are moving into our new Science/Social Studies/Health unit that we (Mrs. D. Dykstra

and Mrs. Heidema) named ‘Living in this World’. Our lessons and theme centers revolve around the question,

“How do I make a difference living in this world?” We will focus on differences in peoples and their needs and

animals and their needs. This offers us a great opportunity to see how God created man wonderfully and fearfully,

how He provides for our needs and what task He gives man in his environment all the way through history from

Adam and Eve in paradise to us here in Winnipeg. Not only that, but God also provides in the world of animals.

Just read Psalm 104 (what we will do this week) and you will see: How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom

you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. (vs.24)

Parents thank you for doing the Home Reading so diligently. Around this time of the year the reading

skills of many students are increasing noticeably. Also, their confidence in reading is growing. Daily reading

practice certainly pays off! With I Love to Read Month coming up there will be even more chances to read more

and more and more…

We are looking forward to our field trip on Feb. 5 to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Parents please

send in the permission slips if you haven’t done so yet. Have a good week again!

Bible: After the Israelites celebrated the first Passover they finally could leave Egypt. This week the stories will be

about the Exodus, the passage through the Red Sea and we will see how God provides His people with food and

water in the desert.

Word Wall Words: Into – nice – on – our.

Letter Work: Last week we practiced words with the ch sound. With letter cards the students formed words like

rich, inch, chin, child and children. Keep your eye open for some more ch-words and/or start a little collection on

the fridge door. Some students need to see this sound more often, especially when they are not sure about the order

of the letters that make up this sound. (“Is it hcip or chip?”)

Math: The subject is again “Friends of Ten”. The students are learning what two numbers together make ten, for

instance, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 1 and 9. Besides activities that are geared towards memorizing these combinations we

will introduce the number families that come with these combinations, first the additions: 1+9=10, 9+1=10,

10=1+9, 10=9+1.

Math: Unit: Statistics and Probability. We finished up this unit this week. Review and test at the

beginning of next week. Next unit: Shape and Space: For the first part of this unit we will be working

with 3D objects and 2D shapes.

Mental Math: Doubles + 1

Social Studies: Finishing off the unit: Our Local Community. Thanks to all who volunteered and helped

out with our field trip to the Transcona Museum this week. That was great! The grade 2 students had a

fantastic time and learned a lot! We’re almost done wrapping this unit up. Next week we’ll finish up, do

some review and write our test.

Gym: Gym days: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Continuing with ball skills – focusing on kicking

skills and foot dribbling skills along with games that practice these skills. We have now “graduated” to

playing mini soccer games.

Science/Social Studies: We will continue in our social studies unit on “Exploring the World,” focusing

Health: In health we are learning about what the word ‘smart’ means for each of us. We are discovering

our strengths as a class, and also what areas we can help each other in. We have finished taking surveys

in class. Just a friendly reminder to please return the completed surveys to me next week! We are

finishing off this unit in health, and I would love to take up the results in class! Thank-you!

Math: We are continuing to become familiar with the concept of multiplication and the vocabulary of

arrays, groups, and sets.

Language Arts: We are going to continue in the writing trait, word choice, focusing on synonyms,

similes, and metaphors as great ways to spice up our writing. We are also continuing to work on book

reports!

Spelling words: We will be doing a review of past spelling words this week! I will send them home

in their agenda next week.

The students are looking forward to a short week next week, and then we’ll begin our exciting month of

February with some old and new favourite activities!

Bible: We began the story of David becoming king (2 Samuel 2-5). We’ll continue with the stories of 2

Samuel -10.

Math: Our new unit “Telling Time” started off with a lesson in writing dates in metric notation and

some activities related to the analog clock. Next, we’ll complete activities that use both analog and

digital clocks.

ELA: In our unit called Up in the Sky students read and discussed a poem called Skywriting and read an

article describing how to fly a hot air balloon in groups. Each group made a pamphlet or poster

summarizing the steps that need to be followed, including safety checks. Our next story is also a non-

fiction that teaches facts about the sun.

Reading across Canada Challenge: Next week we’ll scrapbook our sports related book. Make sure

your book is at school for you to work from. We’ll have our Book talk this week Thursday, the 30th

of

January. Students should start reading their next book which needs to be about pioneers. They selected a

book today. It needs to be read by February 13.

Spelling: Tuesday evening, January 28 students will be required to write sentences for lesson 14. The

exercises are due the following Monday, February 3. Basic List: chased, moving, scored, laughing,

dressed, taking, laughed, coming, used, racing, missed, making, pushed, until Super words: removing,

coached, training, athlete, useful, scraped Challenge words: incandescent, fluorescent

6+1 Writing: Conventions-Students completed one more writing assignment which focused on the

organizational structure of a paragraph. I told them that as church goers they should be familiar with the

structure since it follows most sermon outlines! We reread the story Vikings Ho! and then wrote a

paragraph about Vikings together as a class. Then students chose a topic and wrote their own. Topics

varied from animals like cats, horses and penguins to toys like Lego and remote control cars to name but

a few . Next we’ll begin a new trait on Word Choice.

Science: We studied natural and artificial light sources, which lights are sources and which ones nearly

reflect a light source.

Phys. Ed. (combined with grade3). So far in our in-class hockey tournament the Canucks and Flames

are tied for the lead, each with 4 points. Next week Phys. Ed will be in the afternoon due to the exams

being written in the gym in the morning. We have the following scheduled gym classes next week:

Parents you may notice that the Spelling checklists look at little different than normal. There are two

main assigned due dates instead of four. Students are still encouraged to maintain positive homework

habits by splitting their work into achievable sections (that way Saturday spelling doesn’t turn into a

nightmare…).

Bible: We are working on Jesus’ Suffering, Death, Resurrection and Ascension. The students have been

working on creating a timeline to Jesus’ death.

ELA: The students are now working on turning their Story Boards into Graphic Novels. I am really

excited to see some of the preliminary work on this :)

Math: We have wrapped up our Multiplication and Division Units and will be moving onto

Measurement. We will learn that some of the lessons just learned will come in handy…

Social Studies: We have learned about the battles at Ypres and the Somme. The students have also

learned the terms prejudice and discrimination. We have studied how the Canadian government and

citizens demonstrated this in their treatment of “enemy aliens” (internment camps and recruitment

policies). We will also be looking at Canada’s involvement in the battle at Vimy Ridge.

Art: We will be working on some of our graphic novel components in our art classes.

Spelling: Please remember that all corrections from the previous lesson must be completed. A parent

may assist in the reviewing of your lesson. Use your checklist and follow the specific instructions AND

deadlines – don’t leave it until last minute! Remember that the spelling dictation will also be on Tuesday

Social Studies: We have learned about the battles at Ypres and the Somme. The students have also

(re)learned the terms prejudice and discrimination. We have studied how the Canadian government and

citizens demonstrated this in their treatment of “enemy aliens” (internment camps and recruitment

policies). We will also be looking at Canada’s involvement in the battle at Vimy Ridge.

GRADE 7/8

Math 7: We continue with Unit 3 “Fractions, Decimals, and Percents”. We continue to practice adding

and subtracting decimals. This week we will work on Multiplying and Dividing Decimals.

ELA 7:We continue with extra focus on Grammar. We will cover the different parts of a sentence and

learn about sentence structure. After this we will work on keyword outlining and research to prepare us

for the work we need to do for Heritage Fair.

French 7: After finishing our lesson on ordering food, we’ll move to our next lesson on ordering drinks.
