Variety is the Spice of Life

For eight weeks, beginning on July 29, the Living Wa-ters family will truly be blessed as you will see and hear a different preacher on Sun-day morning. As

Loni and I will be enjoying our time together out West during August and September, three local pastors have graciously agreed to fill in for me. Pastor Jennifer Schaefer of Hope Lutheran, and Pastors Andrea Barrios and Ken Barrios of Holy Trinity will be preaching for me on those Sundays, and our assisting ministers will be leading the wor-ship service.

The first members of our assisting minister team, Ka-ren Hoeppner, Ray Fundyga, Kim Vaughan and Steve Vaughan, have been graciously and faithfully as-

sisting me with worship leadership for the past month, and in my absence, THEY will be leading wor-ship. They will be leading worship so that our visiting pastors won’t have to concern themselves with any-thing but preaching and presiding at the Lord’s Table.

And in my absence, both Kim and Steve, who are cur-rently “deacons in training,” will also be called to the pulpit to preach a sermon. I am confident that the two of them, with God’s help, will provide an inspira-tional message. As deacons in training, I will be call-ing them to preach again in future months, as well. So, for eight weeks, beginning on July 29, you will be

treated to a variety of preaching styles from a variety

of personalities. And I know for certain you will be

richly blessed! I pray that you will all give these pas-

tors and these assisting ministers a very warm wel-

come and a generous ‘thank you’ for their participa-

tion in worship at Living Waters!

Slow Cooker Pot Luck—Special Thanks—We give special thanks to Joanne Carlock, Vice President of

the Congregation Council and the Fellowship Team members Pat Dinges and Karen Hoeppner, and all those who helped make the “Slow Cooker Social” on Sunday, July 15, a yummy success. Thank you for creating the event and for making it such a happy and successful time of fellowship.

From the Pastor

Greetings everyone!

Back in the year 2008, a movie by the name of “The Bucket List” appeared in the theatres and it starred Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The char-acters they played in the movie were both diagnosed with terminal illnesses, so what these two men did was come up with their list of things to do BEFORE they “kicked the bucket” and died. It was an interesting premise for a movie, and it sure got me to thinking. I think most of us tend to live our lives, tend to live each day, as though the days of our lives will last forev-er. It’s usually only when we get “wake-up calls” that we suddenly see each day of our lives as PRICELESS. Yes, life can be cut short at any moment.

As you know, Loni and I will be taking some time off together in August and September. Our time together is always PRICELESS! And we’ve decided to spend some time in Texas with our daughter’s family. Our two grandsons will soon be back in school, so we’re going to capture some time with them! And then we will head for our old stomping grounds in Colorado. I know I’ve mentioned to many of you that Colorado is ‘holy ground’ for me, and I literally kiss the ground when I arrive. And I don’t know if it’s the mountains or what, but whenever I’m in Colorado, I seem to do a lot of reflec-tion and meditation when I’m there. I find myself capturing some special time early in the morning or late evening to let God know how thankful I am for the blessings of my family and my friends, and for the gift of His call to me to serve as a pastor in His church. God helps me to remember and to realize that I should never take these gifts for granted, they are PRICELESS!

And so, if I DID find out that I only had months to live, what would I do with that time? How would I live my live differently? What would I want to accomplish?

I know for certain that the subjects of the answers to those questions would definitely include God and family and friends. How about you? And how would YOUR bucket list compare to GOD’S bucket list for you? I encourage you to reflect upon that question! And what do you think is on God’s bucket list for Living Waters Lutheran? As a church family that has been so richly blessed with a great variety of gifts, how does God wish us to use those gifts? And are you just taking them for granted?

I know that you love our church! So, don’t take it for granted. Use whatever gift/s that God has blessed you with…TODAY! Be faithful in your stewardship of your time, talents, and treasure…TODAY! Don’t take them for granted! “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4: 10

Our church offers many opportunities for each of us to express our talents. Maybe you have skills and talents, and a calling to volunteer

Once again the Community Meals Team would like to thank all of you for your time and generous dona-tions. As you know during the summer months many of our members leave to go north. This leaves the Community Meals Team short-handed. We need people to cook, serve, set up and clean up on the first and third Thursday of every month from 3 to 6 p.m. You would only need to volunteer for an hour or two. Come setup or stay to serve or you may only want to come and help clean up. Whichev-

er the case your help would be greatly appreciated. Please prayerfully consider joining our team. On another note, our Bike Ministry is also in need of donations. If you or someone you know have a bicy-cle or bicycle parts that you no longer use or need, please consider donating them to our Bike Ministry. God’s blessing to you all, The Community Meals Team

A CALL FOR ACTION The Fellowship Hall Gets a New Coat of Paint

I asked Gary Hiltz, chair of the Tool Box Crew and Council person for Stewardship and Co-chair of Property and Maintenance what the name of the new paint color in the Fellowship Hall was. Without missing a beat, he replied “This Little Light of Mine.’ How appropriate I thought to myself, and then I detected the smirk on his face—I got snookered.

Take time to look at the new paint job done by our members. The project began with the need to freshen the walls in the Fellowship Hall. But as most projects go, the project expanded to the hallways.

Pictured are just a few of the very talented painters that came together on Monday to begin the project., and an equally energetic painting crew on Tuesday, July 23 and 24. There is always a need for additional members who have the ability and time to help in many capacities. Maybe the Tool Box Crew is for you. DID YOU KNOW:

Paraments: The paraments are pieces of cloth that are hung on the main furniture of the chancel, namely,

the altar, the pulpit, and the lectern. The color of the paraments follows the scheme of the liturgical colors: white, red, green, purple, blue and black.

Linens: The term linen refers to the cloths used on the altar and as covering of the communion bread and

wine. The “fair linen” is the chief cloth placed on the length of the altar with a short drape on each side.

For Holy Communion, additional cloths are used. These vary a little depending on the vessels used for Com-munion and the manner in which Communion is served to the con-gregation—by individual cups, by common cup or by intinction. In-tinction is the Eucharistic practice of partly dipping the consecrated bread, or host, into the consecrated wine before consumption by the communicant.

Corporal—The corporal is 18 to 21 inches square and made of fine white fabric. It is placed on the center of the altar. It is on this linen that the chalice is placed.

Purificator—The purificator is a white cloth napkin (11 to 13 inches square), and of fine fabric. It is folded in thirds and placed lengthwise over the chalice sitting on the corporal. The purpose of the purificator is to clean the drinking edge of the chalice when used as a common cup.

Chalice Veil—The Chalice Veil is draped over the chalice with the draped purificator. It is often in the color of the season paraments.
