125th Anniversary Mahalo A Message from Merle Okabe and Ruth Niino-DuPonte
To our Honorees, and to everyone who attended to mark this milestone for our church, we extend our sincere appreciation! Many hours of planning were lightened by many hands who pitched in to design the commemora-tive booklet, sewing lei, arranging flowers, decorating the cake, selling tickets, assisting at the buffet line, displaying the anniversary banners, setting up the table deco-rations, greeting at the reception table and participating in the pro-gram. The soothing voices of the IYAA singers, Pastor Eric’s extraordinary voice and musical composition and our Master of Cere-monies guaranteed an ex-tra special event. The luncheon has been a part of a year-long celebration brought to you by the 125th Anniversary
Planning Committee, to whom we are most grateful for pulling off every detail that made the luncheon so memo-rable. Blessings and grati-tude to the following that assisted in making this important event a success: Kay Kawachika Janet Fujioka Amy Shiroma Moira Tanaka Connie Yoshiyama Jolie Okabe Brandon Ige Gail Wung Michael DuPonte Sue & Bob Smith IYAA singers Woody Kita Eric Tanouye and family Green Point Nurseries and Neo Thong Teng Laura Ota Pastor Eric Anderson Momi Lyman

UPDATE from The Gathering Place

I learned something unexpected last week: that there’s video of the song I sang for our 125th Anniversary Celebration on the Internet! The video is courtesy of our Conference Minis-ter, the Rev. Dr. Charles Buck, who came to share our celebration and bring greetings from the Hawai’i Conference. He and his colleagues attend all kinds of celebrations and events at our neigh-bor churches, and bring the stories back to share through the Coconut Wireless emails and The Friend newsletter. So I wasn’t surprised to see him with his camera. I hadn’t realized he’d taken the video, and one of the IYAA group singing. I’m so glad he did. Dr. Buck gave me an unexpected blessing. Each day comes, I believe and hope, with expected blessings. There are flavors we can taste that always delight us. There are people we can depend upon for a kind word. There are sights, and sounds, and scents, and relationships that fill our hearts. And it’s so easy to grow accustomed to
these familiar wonders. Unexpected blessings have the potential to shake our familiarity. In the sudden warmth of this new gift, I think we have a moment to con-sider the “ordinary” blessings of our lives. Not to compare them, but to appreciate them anew. After all, what is “ordinary” about a sun-rise? What is “ordinary” about a flower blossom’s scent? What is “ordinary” about love? Other than the fact we can experience them nearly every day, there’s nothing ordinary about them at all. Unexpected blessings have awakened me to the reality that my daily life is filled with ordinary blessings: the extrava-gance of God may be the greatest miracle of all.
Many blessings to you!
Pastor Eric

New large print Bibles have been tested by members of the congregation and based on their positive reactions we will be getting new Bibles. The need for new Bibles is based on the current Bibles in the pews. Reading or following along togeth-er brings us all closer to the word and enhances our worship time together. The new Bibles are a more recent Revised Stand-ard Version. The print is larger, the paper is thicker and the print contrast with the back ground makes the words seem to jump off the page.
Bibles can be ordered
for personal use, to donate to the church for the pews, dedicat-ed in memory of a loved one, support for or in praise of family, friends, etc.
The Bibles are $20 each including ship-ping. Below is the order form. When the Bibles arrive we will contact you to get the complete dedication infor-mation.
Mail your form and payment to the church office or leave in the box on the usher’s table. Samples of the Bibles will also be on the usher’s table.

Revisions to the Church Directory
The following revisions were made to the 2016 Church Directory. Please update your personal directories as follows:
(Edits in bold)
Church’s Policy to Prevent Abuse
In September, the Church Council adopted a new Poli-cy to Prevent Abuse. It de-clares: “As a community of Chris-tian faith, the Church of the Holy Cross is committed to creating and maintaining programs, facilities and a community in which mem-bers, friends, staff and volunteers can worship, learn and work together in an atmosphere free from all forms of discrimination, harassment, exploitation or intimidation.” In accordance with the new policy, Sunday School clas-ses will now have at least two unrelated adults present. We are looking for volunteers to “sit in” the grade 4 through 12 Sunday School class. No class prep-aration is necessary, but it is held during worship except on Communion Sundays, when children stay for the entire service. Please contact Gloria Kobayashi, chairperson of the Board of Christian Education, if you can help. Gloria’s contact info is 959-4060 or email: [email protected] For everyone’s safety and in accordance with the advice of our insurer, volunteers also provide documentation and refer-ences and undergo a background check.

Chapel Flags
November has arrived and we celebrate all the congregations and the heritages that worship on our campus. Flags in the sanctuary honor our missionary heritage from Japan, the nations of Chuuk, the Mar-shall Islands, Pohnpei, Tonga, America Samoa, and the home we share here in Hawai’i and the United States. We give thanks for all who follow Jesus here at the Church of the Holy Cross.
