“Relationships Matter”
Pastor D. Marie
Recently I had an encounter with an
associate which left me challenged
and caused me to begin taking
serious inventory of how we “the
church”, “the body of Christ”
interacts with those who are around
us. People we often place into one of the following
six categories; family, friends, neighbors, colleagues,
strangers, and enemies. As I began taking inventory
of my own actions as well as some of the actions of
those closest to me; I learned many of our
perspectives on human value were dramatically
different. While the hierarchy of human value is
often associated or connected with labels such as
family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, strangers, and
enemies. How one defines such words can be
drastically different. For example, is family only
limited to those connected by blood? Are neighbors
only those living within your community? Does
everyone without a personal association to you get
classified as a stranger? You get the gist of where I
am going.
At what point do we start to realize
even our categories we’ve established to guide us in
understanding our roles in relationship to each other,
have somehow become barriers preventing us from
establishing the authentic relationships outlined
within words, and actions of Jesus Christ.
I believe far to many opportunities have been missed
for people to experience the God given blessing of
relationships. When I was younger, I remember
being told “strangers are friends you just have not
met yet”. Such an important concept seems now, old
and outdated when looking at our world.
Throughout the month of July we will be
intentionally focusing on embracing the blessing of
relationships in our midst. So often we are so busy
with our lives that we unintentionally overlook the
relationships we have and the relationships we can
potentially establish. Please join me this month for
any or all of these upcoming events where we will
celebrate the gift of relationship; “Breakfast with the
Pastor, “A Night our with Pastor D.”, and “Family &
Friends Day”.
“Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all
your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as
yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these
two commandments.”” (Matthew 22:37-40 NIV)
