Utopia and Terror in the 20th CenturyJUNE 7 - AUGUST 23 WEDNESDAY, 12-2 PMCourse facilitated by Jim Lamal. Video lectures provided by Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius. This course examines the ideologies that promised utopias and total solutions to social problems, and relates the terrible human toll of attempts to realize these blueprints. Such ideologies functioned as political religions, commanding faith and fanatical adherence and promising salvation. At the same time the ideological regimes were an emphatically modern phenomenon, using new technology, the capabilities of the modern state, and sophisticated methods of control. $10 fee.

June Artists of the MonthTaisia Kuklina grew up in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. She attended the Architecture & Design Academy. Arriving in Madison, Wisconsin in 2006, Taisia had the good fortune to continue her education with established painters including Clayton Beck, Romel de la Torre, Tony Johnson, and others. Combining the concepts and techniques of classical Russian painting and modern Western realism, she strives toward a unique organic synthesis between the two. Taisia’s work can be found in private art collections both in the United States and abroad. She has been teaching at the Atwood Atelier at Winnebago Studios since 2014.

David Hunter Dyer has worked for over 25 years as a biochemist research scientist in studying protein crystallography. Silkscreen art is his way of expressing emotions of history and culture of the world around him. “Often I want my work to be a spontaneous explosion of a million megaton bomb splattering subliminal colors into the viewer’s mind. Art to me is an experiment of ideas and the emotions of color. The silkscreen technique allows me to explore these ideas whether it is to create a cozy warm feeling of peacefulness or a vibrant rock and roll vibe of a death metal punk band run amuck.”

Biking Safety For AdultsTUESDAY, JUNE 20, 10 AM

Now that Spring is trying to arrive, it’s time to get more active outside. Are you thinking about getting that bicycle out of the basement or garage? Are you feeling the need for a refresher on how to ride safely, whether you want to just hit the trails or start pedaling to the park, the store, to work, or where ever else you might want to go? If so, this presentation is for you.

Find out what you can do to keep yourself and those around you safe while riding your bike. We will talk about why bike, types of bikes (if you are in the market for a new one), equipment to keep you safe, rules for the road, etc. We will also have time to answer your questions on these topics, and also any specific questions you may have about anything biking.

Our presenter is John Rider, a Share & Be Aware Ambassador with the Wisconsin Bike Fed. Share & Be Aware is a statewide campaign to increase pedestrian and bicyclist safety by educating all road users. This program is funded by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and administered by the Wisconsin Bike Fed.

Walking ClubTUESDAYS & THURSDAYS AT 9 AM, STARTING JUNE 6Meet inside the Senior Center by the fish tank. We will provide route maps of varying distances. Comfortable shoes and a water bottle are recommended. A great way to get exercise, meet people and have fun!

Why walk? Walking strengthens your heart. Reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke by walking regularly. The Stroke Association says that a brisk 30-minute walk every day helps to prevent and control the high blood pressure that causes strokes, reducing the risk by up to 27 percent. It can also improve your blood pressure, blood sugar levels and blood lipid profile, maintain your body weight and lower the risk of obesity. “Walking is the nearest activity to the perfect exercise” according to Professors Jerry Morris and Adrienne Hardman in our Walking Works report.

Even if you’re not ready to walk at a brisk pace, you can take your time and build up slowly. Walking at any pace will help you to manage your weight, reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of some cancers (inactive people are more likely to develop colon, breast and lung cancer than those who exercise). Walking will improve the flexibility and strength of your joints, muscles and bones too—and it’ll reduce the risk of osteoporosis. We don’t always think of walking as exercise—perhaps because it’s so common that we take it for granted. But walking is a great way to get active and prevent illness.
