Pastoral Reflections by Father Costas

The month of April is immersed in the period of GREAT LENT. It is a time we can invest in the life of the church, in reading a spiritual book, come to Holy Confession, and so make a difference in our spiritual lives. It is also a time that can be easily wasted and thus we derive no benefit from it. In the article below, a dear school mate, Fr. Chris Makiej, presents to us some contemporary tools that if we’re not careful in our use of them, they can surely become obstacles preventing us from fully realizing the spiritual treasure that awaits us in this Holy Season and beyond. May we approach Christ during these Holy Days of Lent, May we seek His forgiveness so that our lives may reflect HIM in all that we do. Blessed Lent to all.

Being Separate in a Connected World

Beloved in Christ, we have to see ourselves as being different than the world around us! As Christians we are called to be “in the world, but not of the world.” (John 15:19). The Scripture says “come out and be separate…..” (2 Cor. 6:17)

Yet this can be very difficult in a world that pressures us to conform to its ways and to be connected to it at all times. We live in this age of the 24hr news cycle, which most of the time is not really “news,” but en-tertainment, shock factor, blog/twitter commentary of usually trivial information. We live in the age of text, twitter, snapchat, Facebook, etc., and we’re pressured to feel we have to be connected constantly or we’ll miss something.

And yes, we are missing something - we’re missing Jesus and a relationship with Him. We’re missing si-lence, prayer, stillness, reflection. And instead, we’ve become impersonal, impatient, addicted, nervous if we don’t have our iPhone “on us” at all times. Is this human advancement? Is this progress of civilization?

Simply because Mark Zuckerberg says this is the way we should live, think, interact, then must it be so? Who is he anyway - a prophet, a saint? Meanwhile, like the national heroin epidemic, we have the smart phone/screen addiction epidemic. Yet people are in denial as their texting thumbs ache from carpal tun-nel. Is all this natural? We’re all high on information overload and our minds are not wired to handle it.

In his book The Shallows, Nicholas Carr explores the impact that our perpetual internet connection is hav-ing on the way we think. Numerous studies point to

the same conclusion, he writes: “When we go online, we enter an environment that promotes cursory read-ing, hurried and distracted thinking, and superficial learning. We’ve grown quite adept at scanning and skimming, but what we are losing is our capacity for concentration, contemplation and reflection.”

Yes, we need the technology to function, but how much have we allowed it to control us? Are we able to take breaks, step away and be separate – and make a connection with God without a screen in front of us?

GREAT LENT Now more than ever, Lent is a great way to feel that separation during these 40 days of prayer and fasting; to feel that things are different; to slow down, put the phone aside, and turn inward and in God’s presence.

Beloved, don’t let trendy modern gadgetry rule and ruin your life! Use moderation and self-discipline. Take breaks from your home/office computer and smart phone. Get some exercise; take a walk; com-municate face to face with your spouse and children; come to church more often to pray and get connected with the “spiritual network,” not just the social net-work. Rather than constantly gaze at the icon apps on your computer screen at home, come to Sunday Litur-gies and the Lenten services and gaze at the Iconosta-sion icon screen and enter into true connection and real prayer.

I certainly realize the importance of network- ing and messaging, etc. But I also believe that as modern Or-thodox Christians we have a responsibility, whether its through banners on our texts, tweets, emails, web-sites, etc, to not only spread the truth of Christ and the Gospel, but to communicate the message to use less technology, in order to remind people to take significant breaks from “the screen.”

Yes, we enjoy technology to but how much have allowed it to control

Less is more. Less screen means more worship time; it means more time alone reading the Bible, in prayer, in reflection, without all the beeps and buzzing. It means more quality family time, more time in communica-tion and interaction with your spouse; more real con-versations and human interaction with real people;

Funerals May Their Memory Be Eternal

March 1st Nicholas Moraitis March 8th Sherrie Hostetter (daughter of Mary Ann Saridakis) We would be happy to announce a special occasion in this column. All you need to do is notify the office at 440.237.8998 or [email protected].

more eyes off the screen and contemplating the beauty of nature and God’s presence in all things with our natural eyes.

Do not conform to this world, but be transformed (Romans 12:2). Social media has a highly addictive and time consuming effect which can negatively affect our marriages, families and relationships. Therefore we should not feel pressured to conform to all the jin-glism of the technology lingo. Certainly it’s fine to do so in moderation, but I submit that its also ok if you do not choose to like us or friend us or follow us….and it doesn’t mean that you’re not hip or cool. And, though it may be a bit extreme, I declare it’s also ok if you want to throw your phone out the window and say enough!

I believe that we are way beyond society simply “adjusting” to the new technology, as we have in the past to the advent of radio, television or the remote con-trol. We’re in a spiritual and contemplative free fall. Just google “screen addiction” and read for your- self.

I also think its fascinating that as we “advance” with the larger HD 3D TV’s and ever more vivid images of “the screen,” we have very little that is good (noble, just, pure, lovely) to display (Philippians 4:8). Most modern movies and TV shows lack creativity, art, joy and beauty. Without God, is that not the result? We have fantastic screens, but terrible entertainment. It seems modern man has lost his soul as fast as the speed of technology advances.

And so therefore beloved in Christ, during this beauti-ful Lenten season, may we “consider our ways.” (Haggai 1:7). Let us come out and be separate - not conforming to the world but transforming the times. And let us consider some serious fasting from the gadgetry that controls us, and focus on dis-connecting…so that we may truly connect, and com-mit ourselves, and one another, and our whole life, to Christ our God.

Fasting & Health “It is puzzling why fasting has fallen into disrepute,” says Dr. Claude Miller, a New York psychiatrist who spe-cializes in weight problems. “From a medical point of view, fasting can be very beneficial. Not only from the weight loss aspect, but spiritually and psychologically.” Of course, few people can endure a total fast - not eat-ing anything and drinking only water - or even a near total fast. This total fasting incidentally, like that of the saints, produces “in the terminology of our times, a natu-ral “high.” In the initiation rites of some Indian tribes, the young braves used to fast to the point of euphoria and expanded consciousness. But the average person who is five to ten pounds overweight and wants to lose it fast can benefit by a far less ascetic fast. The Lenten season is a traditional time of fasting for Christians all over the world. A practical and effective fasting diet could be to eat one meal a day, or to limit your intake to 1000 calories per day. The benefits of fasting are many. It is good for your digestive system. It helps to lower your blood pressure. It can create an “aliveness” when you stop using food as a tranquilizer. Dr. Miller says “contemporary Americans have tried to actualize the myth “every day is a happy day and every hour a happy one. This is absurd for without contrast, life deteriorates into a pattern of boredom . Fasting is good for the body and the soul.”

Visit by His Eminence, Metropolitan SAVAS His Eminence, Metropolitan SAVAS, will be with us on Holy Wednesday to celebrate the Holy Unction Service at 3:00 PM. Please join us to welcome his Eminence t our parish and to receive his blessing.

Sunday School Director Update ~ Presvytera Nicole

Lent always brings a lot of activity for Sunday School. On March 20th, Sunday of Orthodoxy, all the children participated in the procession with the icons followed by a shortened class time.

The themes for the month of April are Pentecost and Transfiguration. Along with the themes, there is much for the children to experience in April during Lent, which is part of learning. The third Sunday of Lent, April 3rd, the children will remain in church for the service of the Elevation of the Cross, and then go down to class. Saturday of Lazarus Liturgy will be on April 23rd, followed by a breakfast and making of palm crosses. Palm Sunday, April 24th, they will par-ticipate in presenting the palms in church for them to be blessed, and then go down to class.

Our annual Holy Friday Retreat, April 29th, chaired by Tammy Parianos and Wendy Kouvaras is for all children Kindergarten through 12th grade. Following the retreat, the children stay for the 3:00 p.m. Taking Down from the Cross Service.

We are also asking parents of girls 4 years of age through 6th grade to sign-up for them to be My-rofores on Holy Friday. All girls 4 years old through 6th grade are welcome to participate at the 3:00 p.m. service. Older girls, grades 3-6, are welcome to partic-ipate in the evening Lamentation service and proces-sion of the Epitaphion. Please sign up so we know how many girls to prepare for. Practice will be on Sat-urday of Lazarus after the breakfast.

Plan to come to the Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, May 1st at 11:00 a.m. All children up to 10 years old are welcome to participate!

Sunday School will be participating in doing an Act of Kindness before the year ends. We will have one Sun-day - Kindness Sunday - where all children in all clas-ses will make and send cards to servicemen overseas. We will announce the date in the coming weeks.

Before we know it, we will be at the end of the school year. May 22nd is the last day of Sunday School with recognition, and we plan to have a Sunday School family picnic after church on the deck.

Congratulations to the following 4 year olds for learn-ing how to make the sign of the cross: Zisi Giatis Noah Sampson Donovan Sitter Kali Anastasi!

St. Paul Hellenic Dancers Eleni Johnson

Hellenic Dance Director

As the weeks continue into spring, the dance program gets busier and busier as all the dancers continue learn-ing dances for this year’s Festival in July!

On Saturday, March 19, the dance instructors were so happy to participate in the Greek Independence Day parade at Annunciation Cleveland. We had a large turnout of kids walking the parade in their dance cos-tumes and everyone enjoyed the Senior groups won-derful performance. It is a wonderful tradition that we are so happy to be part of every year.

Reminder that this year’s Youth Lenten Dinner is Wednesday, April 6th, 2016. Everyone should have re-ceived a link to sign up to bring a pot luck item for all to share after the Pre-sanctified Liturgy that night. Please plan on attending this event.

UPCOMING PRACTICES: April 3 April 10 May 15 May 22 April 3rd is also Costume Fitting Day for both Junior and Beginner Groups. This is the day that all the danc-ers will get measured to ensure their costume will fit properly in July and to give us enough time to order any new costumes that may be needed from Greece. Practice for each group will begin after all dancers in the group have been measured (with the amount of dancers in each group that will need to get measured please know practice may run a little longer than nor-mal that day). Please note that dance registration fees need to be paid prior to this day.

There is no Senior Dance practice on April 3 because of the Metropolis GOYA Volleyball tournament at St. De-metrios Rocky River.

Senior Group only: April 10 is costume measuring day for your group immediately following the GOYA meeting, we will begin practice once everyone is meas-ured. Again, note that dance registration fees need to be paid prior to this day in order to assign your dancer a costume.

Thank you once again for your continued sup-port in the dance program.

Two Beautiful Traditions

As we begin the Lenten Journey together, we all have to look forward to the day where we celebrate the Glo-rious Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We have Two Beautiful Traditions that are celebrated during this time.

The first of these traditions is something known as the “Holy Noise”, where children ring handheld bells during the Liturgy on

Holy Saturday morning in anticipation of the Glorious News of the Resurrection. All Children are invited to bring a handheld bell which they will ring at the ap-propriate time. We will ring the bells again during the Agape Vespers on Sunday as we chant the hymn “Christ is Risen.”

The second of these two traditions is the reading of the Gospel in many different languages during the Service of Agape Vespers which will be celebrated on Sunday, May 1st at 11:30 a.m. During this service, the Gospel is read in many different languages by the parishioners symbolizing that the Glorious Resurrection of Christ is proclaimed to all ends of the earth and to all nations!!!

The following is a list of the languages that we current-ly have the Gospel texts for:

Afrikaans * Estonian * Nepali Albanian * Finnish * Norwegian Aleutian * French * Polish Arabic * Georgian * Portuguese Armenian * German * Romanian Bulgarian * Greek (modern) * Russian Carpatho-Russian * Hebrew * Serbian Cebuno * Hungarian * Somali Cherokee * Icelandic * Spanish Chinese * Indonesian * Swahili Church Slavonic * Italian * Swedish Coptic * Japanese * Tagalog Creole * Korean * Thai Czech * Latin * Turkish Danish * Latvian * Ukrainian Dutch * Lithuanian * Vietnamese

We encourage anyone who knows one of these lan-guages to sign up to read the Gospel during this ser-vice. To do this, please e-mail Fr. Michael at [email protected], and indicate what language you will read. The languages will be on a first come, first serve basis.

Myrofores - Myrrh Bearers

Holy Friday, April 29th, 2016 We encourage all girls in preschool through 6th grade to participate as Myrofores on Holy Friday. We wel-come all girls preschool through 6th grade to partici-pate in the 3:00 p.m. "Taking down from the Cross" service. Only girls in grades 3rd—6th are welcome to participate in the 7:00 p.m. Lamentations service. Myrofores are asked to dress in all white (dress /shoes / stockings /socks/ sweaters). Each girl will carry a white basket filled with red rose petals. They will be seated in reserved seats in front of the first pew on each side of the church. Parents are asked to sit behind them. In the afternoon "Taking down from the Cross" ser-vice, the Myrfores proceed with the altar boys as the priest carries the Epitaphion (cloth with embroidered image of Christ) around the church. They will then place their rose petals on the Epitaphion after the priest places it in the Kouvouklion. They represent the myrrh bearing women who anointed the body of Christ in the tomb. In the evening service, the Myrofores come forth and place their rose petals in the Epitaphion during the Lamentation hymns. During the Procession, they will walk as a group near the front of the procession. An important rehearsal will take place on Lazarus Sat-urday, April 23rd in church following Liturgy and after breakfast. All girls need to attend. We invite every-one to join in making the palms for Palm Sunday. Please fill out the form below to register your daugh-ter. We need a solid count so we know how many baskets to prepare. Greek School News ~ Kathy Glaros

Wow! What a March it has been! There are many rea-sons to celebrate here at our school. Here is quick glimpse:

On March 13th, 2016 our students presented our annual Greek Independence Day Program follow-ing Liturgy. We also sponsored a fundraising breakfast. The event was very well attended and your participation as parents reaffirms to your chil-dren the value that you place on their education. Our staff and students were thrilled by the support of our parishioners and our spiritual leaders, Fr. Costas and Fr. Michael, and we can't thank you enough for making the event such a success!

In celebration of our St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church 50th Anniversary, Greek School sponsored a 50 Act of Kindness event by collecting pledges as they walked in the Greek Independence Parade on March 19th to benefit ZOE for Life and they will continue to collect donations through May.

An exciting month indeed!

As we begin the month of April, there are a couple of schedule reminders that I would like to make:

Monday, April 4th ~ report cards go home.

Wednesday, April 6th ~ Youth Lenten Dinner

Monday, April 25th ~ NO school - Holy Week

Monday, May 2nd ~ classes resume

The final months are very busy academically, where students will be reviewing the year’s work and pre-paring for the finals exams. Parents assistance in keeping students focused on their studies is greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in summer camp for your child, please join us in Greek School Vacation Camp June 13- 15 from 9:00 AM—2:00 PM.

As we approaching the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I would like to wish you all:

ΚΑΛΗ ΑΝΑΣΤΑΣΗ !

Six Easy Steps to an Effective Estate Plan

JD Ingalls, MBA, Financial Advisor Wells Fargo Advisors

Join us for a complimentary educational seminar on developing an effective estate plan tailored to your specific needs and goals. In the event of incapacity or death, providing clear instruction on asset manage-ment, inheritance and gifting, as well as educating your beneficiaries is the first step in reducing the cost and stress on your family. This event is educational in nature ~ no company specific products will be discussed.

Refreshments and appetizers will be served

AFGHAN PROJECT: THE TALENTED HANDS OF OUR PHILOPTOCHOS! Our Ladies Philoptochos continues our tradition of presenting every newborn in our com-munity with a handmade afghan at their 40-Day Bless-ing. Each afghan donated has a tag that indicates that it was hand-made by Philoptochos and a card with the donor’s name as well as the children’s book “What Do You See at Liturgy” enclosed as a memento of this spe-cial occasion. If you would like to create baby afghans they should be approximately 30x36 inches knitted or crocheted in washable yarn. Last month Mary Anastos donated 3 exquisite white knit afghans and Maria Lovejoy also donated a beautiful knit afghan as well. To date our ladies have created 150 crocheted and knit-ted baby afghans! In addition, many thanks also to Maria Lovejoy for delivering three love-ly baby afghans to Zoe for Life. Please see photo of our parishioner Karen Con-toveros receiving three lovely baby af-ghans at Zoe for Life.

Our Ladies Philoptochos is also knitting and crochet-ing afghans for our homebound parishioners. These lap afghans are given to our homebound parishioners who welcome a visit from our Philoptochos ladies. If you know of anyone who would enjoy such a visit, please let us know. Each lap afghan should be approx-imately 40x48 inches knitted or crocheted in washable yarn. To date our ladies have crafted 68 adult afghans! Monetary donations are also accepted in lieu of hand-made afghans to offset the costs of this project. Please contact Maria Lovejoy 330.220.3213 or Maribeth Lekas 216.408.6070 if you are interested in assisting with our Afghan Ministry.

OCF—ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP—WINTER ACTIVITIES GALORE! OCF is the National Campus Ministry Program for Orthodox college stu-dents. Greater Cleveland has four active OCF Chapters that include students from CWRU, JCU, CSU, BW and CCC. OCF has monthly meetings and various events for the college students each month providing free food and admissions. Please have your students checkout the OCF Cleveland page on Facebook for events in the Cleveland area.

Our St. Paul Philoptochos reaches out to our college students by mailing them OCF Connect Kits. Connect Kits are mailed to our St. Paul college freshmen that include an Orthodox Study Bible, reading guides, prayer books, guides for finding a local OCF chapter, OCF travel mug filled with delicious homemade

koulourakia, as well as other fun goodies for our col-lege students. This month the Philoptochos sent a Connect Kit to Ionnis Patten who is attending Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Please forward email and college snail mail addresses for any St. Paul col-lege Freshmen and/or to donate, please contact Mary Steve [email protected] or Maribeth Lekas [email protected]. We will continue to deliver Connect Kits during the Spring Semester as well.

50th Anniversary Historic Committee and Commemorative Album

Projects

The Historic Committee would like to create compre-hensive archives that will document the life and activi-ties of our community during over the past 50 years. Due to the volume of information that is being anticipat-ed, some information will be used in the 50th Anniver-sary Commemorative Album that is being produced, while the rest will become part of the archival records of our community. Here’s how you can participate:

COLLECTION OF PICTURES We invite ALL parishioners to bring photographs, arti-cles, and documents from the earliest of days through the years that will highlight the various activities in the life of the parish on the following Sundays:

April 3 April 10 April 17

Pictures will be scanned and returned to you on the same day. Please be sure to identify the event and in-dividuals in the picture.

VIDEOTAPING Joe Pagonakis has volunteered to offer the opportunity to any parishioner who would like to share any thoughts, experiences, or reflections from the years past to be videotaped. Come prepared during the cof-fee social on Sunday April 10 or April 17.

MINISTRY PICTURES Pictures of all the ministry groups will be taken during the coffee social on April 10th.

THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST

A simple retelling of the resurrec-tion of Christ for children. Full-color illustrations.

ESTHER’S EASTER DRESS Esther is eager to be one of the young girls participating in the Good Friday service as a maiden guarding Jesus’ tomb. But will she have a white dress to wear? This fascinating book walks through the Holy Week services from the Saturday of Lazarus through East-er, as her mother explains the mean-ing and scriptures for each service.

Lively drawings magnify this retelling of the passion of Jesus. For grades 2 through 6, it also includes sec-tions on dyeing Easter eggs and baking Pascha bread.

PASCHAL ORTHODOX ACTIVITIES Includes coloring and activities related to Orthodox Pascha.

JOURNEY THROUGH HOLY WEEK Follow Christ and the Church through each stage of Holy Week—from the Saturday of Lazarus to the Agape ser-vice with this full-color guide. The au-thor pinpoints the relevance and mean-

ings of the services, hymns, and scripture readings. Special features on each page illuminate icons, tradi-tions, and history. Suitable for ages 10 and up.

GLORIOUS PASCHA Orthodox Christian children’s book covering Palm Sunday, all the days of Holy Week, and Glorious Pascha. For children ages 5—10.

Festival Baking Baking for this year’s Festival will begin April 4th at

9:00 AM and continue every Monday and Tuesday morning until we have finished baking (NO baking Holy Week). Whether you only have an hour or more to offer each week, we encourage you to join us. The more hands available, the sooner we can finish.

REMEMBER, OUR FESTIVAL WILL BE HELD JULY 14-17, 2016!

FOOD FAITH AND FASTING ~ A SACRED JOURNEY TO BETTER HEALTH Orthodox Christians fast approxi-mately half the days of the year. But in our food-obsessed society, how do we determine our approach to eating in general? Nutritional expert Rita Madden expands on her popular podcast to help us eat, ex-ercise, and manage stress in a way that is healthful for both our bodies and our souls—in times of fasting, feasting, and the ordinary days in between. Not sure what to buy for that someone special? Gift certificates are available for purchase in any denomi-nation. Visit our bookstore every Sunday following Divine Liturgy or call the church office if you would like to come by during the week. We also have gift certificates available in any de-nomination. These make great gifts!

Stewardship News

Operating Income VS Expenses As you look at the chart above, you will notice that most months our expenses are higher than the income we receive. You may ask, “How do we pay our ex-penses then?” Well, if it were not for the income we receive from the caterer, the rental properties, and the Festival our expenses would not be met. Expenses are constantly reviewed by Parish Council and reduced whenever possible. Any expense over $500.00 needs Parish Council approval and any ex-pense over $3,000.00 needs to have three bids submit-ted. Parish Council is doing their due diligence. How then can we increase our income? We should not be relying on the caterer, our renters, or the Festival. We, as parishioners, need to take a look at our own commitment to our parish. Are we stewards of St. Paul or merely attending services because it is conven-ient? Are we fulfilling our stewardship pledge? Are we truly giving of our first fruits back to the church? Can we give an additional $1.00 or more each week?
