An Ecumenical, Community Celebration!

This year we are reviving a lost tradition. Hastings Ministerial Association is hosting an Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 4:00 at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church. Join our brothers and sisters in Christ as we unite together to give thanks to God for the many blessings we have been given.

A great experiment in the desert called the biodome created a living environment for human, plant and animal life. A huge glass dome was constructed to house an artificial, controlled environment with purified air and water, healthy soil and filtered light. The intent was to af-ford perfect growing conditions for trees, fruits and vegetables, as well as humans.

People lived in the biodome, for many months at a time, and everything seemed to do well with one exception. When the trees grew to a certain height, they would topple over. It baffled scientists until they realized they forgot to include the natural element of wind. Trees need wind to blow against them because it causes their root systems to grow deeper, which supports the tree as it grows taller.

Who among us doesn’t long for a perfect growing environment for ourselves, with no disruptions from outside influences? We strive to avoid the times of contrast and tension, when life’s daily challenges push against us. When they do, the normal tendency is to curse them. If trees could talk, would we hear them curse the wind each time they encountered a storm?

Dennis Merritt Jones, D.D., is the author of Your Re-Defining Moments, The Art of Uncertainty and The Art of Being, the source of this essay. https://www.naturalawakeningsmag.com/Natural-Awakenings/April-2015/Strong-Winds-Strong-Roots/

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him

and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. (Colossians 2:6-7 NRSV)

Deep Roots

Our Ministers: All members of Our Saviour’s

Pastoral Staff: Lloyd Menke, Senior Pastor Doug Duin, Associate Pastor

Our Website: www.OSEL.orgChurch email: [email protected]

Our vision: Rooted in God’s grace, always made new.

Our mission: Living as the hands, feet and heart of Christ.

Our promise: Rejoicing together in God’s grace, hope and love.

Winds help trees develop deep roots. The writer of Colossians encourages us to be rooted, built up in Jesus. We become established in faith as we turn again and again to Jesus when the winds blow.

The biblical understanding of Thanksgiving is not that everything is always perfect. Rather, it is a sense of gratitude for the one who holds us and keeps us from toppling even when the winds blow. Good times come and go. If our sense of gratitude is based in the perfection of life it will also blow with the wind. The bible invites us to be deeply rooted in Jesus, in faith, and to discover life that abounds in thanksgiving.

May you have a blessed Thanksgiving this year and all the year through!

Pastor Lloyd Menke

Make a contribution to Our Saviour’s with a quick text message!Simply send a text to 651-401-8516 with the amount you would like to contribute. Make sure to include the dollar sign before the amount. Example: $25. Within a few minutes, you’ll be sent a text with a link to register. Click on the link and enter your cardholder name and credit or debit card information. Once your registration is complete, you will receive a text verification and a receipt via email. For future giving, simply send a text with the amount you wish to give, and it will process automatically!

Financial Update

What a month! Giving for the month of September was down $18,000 (-19.7%) compared to September, 2017. This is partially due to a decrease in attendance for the month. We miss you when you’re not here! The decrease in giving in September is driving the year-to-date giving to be down $8,000 (-1.2%). This puts us in the hole for the year about $1,400. We hope to catch up before year end.

And don’t forget the capital appeal that is still active. The capital appeal was created for various capital projects two years ago. The current balance on the loan is $119,000 and the next loan payment of $46,500 is due June 1, 2019. That may seem like a long way off, but at our current giving to the capital appeal, we will not be able to make this loan payment. Please prayerfully consider giving to the capital appeal so we are able to make this loan payment.

If you would like to give to the general fund and/or to the capital ap-peal, you can do so with the online or text giving options available. Stop by the Information Center and talk to Jan Woog if you would like more information.

Thank you for your partnership in ministry and for your continued financial support of the work we do together as we seek to live the mission statement of Our Saviour’s, “Living as the hands, feet and heart of Christ.” We’re excited about all the great things happening at OSEL but we need your help!

Share Your StoryHave you noticed the colorful tree posters in the gathering area? They are there for a purpose. We would love to have you share your stories about what has grown or how you con-tinue to grow your faith. Your stories need not be of a certain length (though we would love to have longer stories as well!). There are colorful slips of paper in by the posters for you to write your stories on, or you can email them to the church ([email protected]) or ([email protected]) or send your story in the mail or simply drop it off at the church office.

For every 20 stories we receive we will be plant-ing a tree in the Spring! We hope to plant at least 11 trees, one here at Our Saviour’s and 10 out in the community. The trees are intended to be reminders of how faith is growing all around us – including out in the community. The steward-ship committee plans to use your stories of faith growth to encourage us all in the gift of faith throughout the coming year. Everyone has a story - please share yours.
