MetalMapper: A Multi-Sensor TEM and Magnetic Gradiometer System for UXO Detection and Classification ESTCP Project MM-0603 Principal Investigator: Dr. Mark Prouty Geometrics, Inc San Jose, CA [email protected] Objective : The objective of this project is to commercialize advanced EMI metal detecting technology that has recently emerged from ESTCP, SERDP, and NAVEODTECHDIV funded research. We have assembled an advanced electro- magnetic induction (EMI) instrument for UXO detection and characterization. The instrument will perform substantially better than existing commercially available in- struments. Technology Description: The MetalMapper system (right) consists of: Antenna Array - 3 orthogonal transmitter loops (X,Y,Z) together with 7 tri-axial re- ceiver “cubes”. Antenna Platform - A strong, durable platform constructed from surface- reinforced foam. Man-Portable Electronics Package - Portable battery-powered data acquisition and transmitter electronics package. Integrated Software - Acquisition software is integrated with Geosoft Oasis mon- taj™ and interpretation software to facilitate post-acquisition QC, data display, tar- get list management, and parameter extraction. Expected Benefits: The MetalMapper will improve the quality of UXO sur- veys. The instrument and its software provide improvements both for detection sur- veys (UXO mapping or raw dig lists) and for characterization surveys (single target classification, false alarm reduction). Operating in its static mode, the MetalMapper can parameterize a target with data collected at a single field point. This improves results since it eliminates the strict requirements for geo-location (< 1 cm) and platform attitude measurements that are required when processing data from multiple field points. Weight: 39 lbs * Dimensions: 8.5 x 9.75 x 14.5 in Battery Life (Li-Ion ): 4-6 hr Block diagram of MetalMapper electronics The MetalMapper system acquiring dynamic data at Aberdeen Proving Ground (September, 2008) MetalMapper antenna platform (skid-mounted towed configuration) MetalMapper receiver cube locations Antenna Platform The antenna platform is fabricated using plastic on foam-core structural elements. The resulting structure is strong, durable, and (relatively) light-weight. The prototype weighs approximately 65 Kg (143 lb). The cart can be disassembled for shipment. Al- though deployed at APG in a skid-mounted configuration, the plat- form has removable wheels for deployment as a man-towed plat- form. Electronics Package The electronics package consists of: 1. Transmitter: Digital control of frequency, duty cycle, and switch- ing between Tx loops. 2. Data Acquisition (DAQ): 24-channel, simultaneous sampling, 16-bit, 250 kHz ADC; synchronized digital I/O; serial I/O; USB; fully capable PC (Windows); operated remotely via wireless link to con- sole display. 3.Position & Attitude Geo-Positioning—RTK GPS Attitude: Modular 2-axis accelerometer w/ magnetic reference 4. Magnetics (Option) - The MetalMapper can be configured with 2 Geometrics Model 822/823A Cs magnetometers for operation in dual-mode (EM & magnetic gradient). Block diagram of MetalMapper software MetalMapper Software The MetalMapper is supported with three software packages providing services for Data Acquisition, Physics-based Interpretation, and Post-acquisition Processing (Block Diagram—left). Acquisition software supports all aspects of data acqui- sition, in-field data display and data storage, and re- trieval/export to text files. A custom Gx in Montaj im- ports stored data and other Gx’s simplify processing. Access to raw data is provided through exposed Micro- soft .Net interfaces. Interpretation software operates independently through the .Net interfaces. Physics-based Interpretation The MetalMapper (MM/RMP) physics-based interpretation program incorporates a state-of-the-art program de- veloped by Torquil Smith (Lawrence Berkeley Labs) for use with the BUD system. The Figure below (B) shows the polarizability plots for the target associated with cell B-3 of the Calibration Lanes (YPG) using the transient data (A). Data QC/QC and Display MetalMapper data are most efficiently stored as binary data files in a Microsoft standard format. The DLL library (EM3DData.DLL) allows external programs such as MM/ RMP and Geosoft Oasis montaj™ (OM) to access these files. We provide a set of custom Geosoft Executables (GX’s) to facilitate the importation of raw data into OM and for the calculation of basic corrections. In these tests, the MetalMapper detected 100% of the targets with 0% background-alarms, and dis- criminated 100% of the ordnance items with a 49% probability of false-positive. In September, the MetalMapper was tested more extensively at the newly reconfigured test site at the Aber- deen Proving Ground. Surveys were completed over 5.8 acres and over 1800 targets were characterized in 14 days of surveying.
