But, as soon as a cell is created, it has an elementary consciousness. So it can be said that life starts at conception when the first cell is formed.’ Gaston Saint-Pierre What is the Metamorphic Technique? The Metamorphic Technique (MT) addresses the factors that determine our consciousness in the nine-month period preceding birth - and even before this in the pre-conception time - by gently massaging specific points on the head, hands and feet. We use these three areas in our external communication and therefore these are the most effective areas to treat. These areas are chosen on the following basis: The head represents thinking; the hands doing; and the feet movement. In undertaking any task, we would think it through first, prepare, and then take action. Any action we undertake therefore proceeds from the head to the hands to the feet before completion. Therefore by treating the head, the hands, and then the feet, symbolically you are taking the treatment from inception to instrumentation, to completion.

The Metamorphic Technique by Margaret Mather, MFHT, ATLM, MICHT, MPACT Margaret Mather provides an introduction to the therapy technique that seeks to help release the client from any issues/traumas that may have affected them on their journey from pre-conception to birth, enabling them to achieve their full potential in life. ‘In many schools of healing and therapy, there is the belief based on the premise that conscious life starts at birth, that our present characteristics are formed in childhood. But, as soon as a cell is created, it has an elementary consciousness. So it can be said that life starts at conception when the first cell is formed.’ Gaston Saint-Pierre

What is the Metamorphic Technique? The Metamorphic Technique (MT) addresses the factors that determine our consciousness in the nine-month period preceding birth - and even before this in the pre-conception time - by gently massaging specific points on the head, hands and feet. We use these three areas in our external communication and therefore these are the most effective areas to treat. These areas are chosen on the following basis: The head represents thinking; the hands

doing; and the feet movement. In undertaking any task, we would think it

through first, prepare, and then take action. Any action we undertake therefore proceeds from the head to the hands to the feet before completion. Therefore by treating the head, the hands, and then the feet, symbolically you are taking the treatment from inception to instrumentation, to completion.

Movement expresses life, in fact it could be said that without movement there

is no life, so the feet, as the symbol of movement, also represent the primary function of the universe.

How MT works The Metamorphic Technique is a holistic treatment, that is to say the practitioner treats the whole person, not any individual part. Symptoms are irrelevant to the MT practitioner because the practitioner seeks to treat the whole body, not just the ways in which imbalance shows itself. To quote Gaston Saint-Pierre, MT works on the basis that the practitioner ‘loosens a structure which is abstract, a structure of time, that of the gestation period’. This structure is reflected in the body - notably in the head, hands and feet - and by loosening the structure, the practitioner supports the body in its desire to achieve self-healing. It does this by massaging six key points on the head, hands and principally, the feet. One of the key aspects of a successful session is the attitude of the practitioner. The role of the practitioner in MT is that of facilitator. S/he works with the recipient’s life force energy, without attempting to impose his/her wishes or direction on it in any way. This means that the practitioner must stand back from the treatment, because even a wish to do good or to heal interferes with the body’s own healing processes. No-one can ever know what wholeness is for another human being, so the practitioner must ensure that their intention does not manifest in the treatment, however well meant. The six spinal techniques The Metamorphic Technique is a massage of the spinal reflex at six separate points. The six stages of the journey are pre-conception; conception; post-conception; quickening; pre-birth; and birth. The objective of the massage is to treat issues that may have arisen during a foetus’s journey from conception to birth and to provide release from these. The massage is primarily on the feet, but during the process, the head and hands are also treated. The technique can also be beneficial for women in pregnancy and since the foetus is dependent on the mother at this stage, it may benefit from the treatment too. Gaston Saint-Pierre, who founded The Metamorphic Technique Association and who promotes MT worldwide, considers that regular treatment will enable the foetus to move through the prenatal period more smoothly, enabling it to emerge free of negativity and face the world with confidence. Gaston Saint-Pierre also states that it is possible to massage the baby from birth. The Metamorphic Technique can be used anywhere; at any time. The client can

watch television; read; go to sleep; meditate; or chat; it makes no difference to the treatment. There are no contraindications to treatment and the same treatment is applied for all conditions. Anyone can massage another person: parents might treat a child, but equally a child could treat their parents; MT can used on friends or complete strangers. Right/left priority Normally the massage starts with the right foot or hand and then goes on to the left side. The right side represents what is happening in the client’s life at present - it shows what s/he is making of his life. The left side holds dormant and potential patterns, those that s/he came into this world with, but that are currently held in suspense. By starting on the right side, the life force seems to clear the way for the other patterns to be released. Deciding which foot to treat first is the client’s prerogative however and should s/he prefer to have the left treated first, then you should do so. The main thing is to get both feet treated in one treatment, so that a balanced treatment is provided. The Metamorphic Technique and special needs children There is one further aspect to MT: Robert St John worked extensively with special needs clients, particularly those with Down’s syndrome and autistism, and he realised that the treatment was particularly beneficial to these groups of clients. ‘…… he (Robert St John) had come to realise that we create our

own stresses, the cause of the illnesses, and that these stresses fall into two distinct classes: those that pull away from life and those that push too forcefully into life. This is exemplified in the extreme by the autistic and the Down’s syndrome persons. The current methods of treatment did nothing to help these proclivities.’

Robert St John found that special needs clients benefited from the treatment, not only because of their direct effects, but also because MT is so simple that they too could do it, and thus make a special connection with friends and family. ‘Practitioners working with patients with such conditions as Down’s

syndrome and autism, say how they notice first a sparkle coming to the children’s eyes, and this is followed by a greater awareness and mobility. It would appear that a child suffering from Down’s syndrome is in the condition because of his eagerness to incarnate, so he works his way out of the syndrome by going through the stages of development that he missed. Conversely, an autistic child seems to be so because of a reluctance to come into matter and change will be

effected by his coming more into contact with reality.’ Summary It may therefore be said that the actual treatment is very easy to do: a simple massage of the spinal reflexes along the inner bony ridges of the feet and ankles, the hands and wrists, along the centre line of the skull and up to the ears. Yet for all its simplicity, it can have far-reaching effects; it deals with an aspect of the human journey not normally addressed, and its benefits for special needs clients may not be seen anywhere else.
