the method still works - moorechurch.com€¦ · 07/08/2014 · special thanks to krystal parmar...
TRANSCRIPT
8 August
Even though we live in a rapidly changing and perilous world, we as Methodists recognize the
great hope of life which is found in Jesus.
Many of our family, friends and neighbors - even here in the buckle of the Bible belt - either do
not go to church, want nothing to do with church or see the church as irrelevant in their lives. This is
true of the old major mainline denominations, as well as the break off denominations of the early 20th
century, the mega churches of the televangelist era and the newer post-millennium congregations.
However, perhaps because of the uncertainty of these post Y2K days, we as United Methodists are
in a prime position to be the most significant and vital catalysts for change. Our ‘method’ of experi-
encing and expressing the Christian faith through scripture, prayer and action was birthed in political -
economic times much like these.
The original focus of the ‘Method’ists was a method of studying the Word of God, join together in
intense prayer, and then going out into the world to show and tell others of the saving grace of Christ.
This method of Scripture based Christianity has lead our nation through three great revivals and it can
lead us through revival again.
The bottom line of our denomination has to be based on the Word of God, the power of the Holy
Spirit and the assurance of our salvation through Jesus Christ. To be change agents for our family,
friends and community, we must first be capable of sharing our own faith.
I have said this many times, and I will say it many more. We must be able to communicate our
own faith story. I hope you have taken an opportunity to write down your own faith story on a single
page. It should be concise, personal and you should know it by heart.
We will be encouraging you to share these faith stories in a devotional booklet which we will put
together for the Advent season. It does not have to be complicated, spectacular, or mind-boggling,
but it does need to be crisp, clean, honest and from the heart.
I hope between now and mid October each of us will write and share our faith journey with others.
Then I hope you will send them to us so we can compile them into a booklet of Advent Devotionals.
We are a congregation that is extremely active in our discipleship. Let us share these life altering ex-
periences of Christ’s love openly with one another.
Truly we are blessed to be a blessing to others.
Pastor Rob
The Method Still Works
Rev. Dr. Greg Tener, Dis-
trict Superintendent and for-
mer long-time member of
Moore FUMC, encouraged our
group and the church to like
grape vine keepers--praying as
we work, not afraid to trim
programs no longer working,
and encourage new growth
and outreach when he spoke on Thursday, July
10th. Fifty-nine attended our pot luck luncheon,
including Rev. Greg and Judy Tener, newcomers
Hal and Ann Meyers, Jeanie Sisson, and staff Rev.
Rob Harris and Sharla Payne.
Upcoming events are District Seniors which
will meet here for pot luck, meat provided, on
Wednesday, July 30th; annual fundraiser lunch-
eon on Sunday, August 24th; annual garage sale
on Saturday, September 6th; several musical
events at OCCC Performing Arts Center, includ-
ing a Christmas Concert by Kathy Mattea, Nash-
ville singer, on December 4th, and Glenn Miller
Orchestra with big band music on February 10th.
Dr. Robby Greenlee, professor of music at
Bowdoin College and alum of this church, will lead
us in a unique musical experience in our next
meeting on August 14th. Come and join our fun-
loving, upbeat group!
Summer is
quickly passing by
and the United Methodist Women
will have a busy
fall. First let’s
take a look at Au-gust. The Charla Circle is the only circle
that will have a meeting this month. There
is no General Meeting. The TEAM Meeting is August 31, 2014 at noon. All chairper-
sons are encouraged to attend. The first
General Meeting of the fall is an evening
meeting September 4th at 6:00pm. It is our annual salad supper. Bring a friend and a
salad. Our guest speaker that night is Judith
Cope from the Infant Crisis Center. The

Camp Pics!
Check out what
the youth and
children of Moore
FUMC have been
doing this
summer!
Growing in Grace Camp was a success
last week!
Thanks to the support of FUMC, we
were able to provide 1/2 scholarships to
the 6 campers that we sent.
Special thanks to Krystal Parmar for
serving as the camp nurse, Pastors Rob
& Trish Harris, and Hayley Leibold
for serving as camp leaders. Gracie Eg-
gleston & Sheldon Sechrist for serving
as “Leaders-In-Training”, Amy Graves
for serving as Dean, and Melissa Collier
& Sarah Hale for providing transporta-
tion to and from Canyon Camp.
Agape Youth Information Wow!
Our Agape Youth group has had a life changing summer for
its individuals AND our group as a whole.
Youth Force and our Dallas Mission Trip have opened our
eyes and hearts for people right within our grasps that God has
called us to love and serve. After serving in Dallas, one of our
youth members said to me, "I had no idea that I could be so
much help to someone in need.
I always thought I was just a kid." Our church providing mission
opportunities for our youth is life altering and we are showing
these youth that no matter their age or life situation - they CAN
make a difference and they CAN be Jesus Christ to anyone they wish.
North & South District Camp was incredible. We had a group of 14 attend from our church.
Our week at Canyon Camp strengthened our bond to each other and renewed our passion for
our Creator. We saw through sermons, small groups, spirit skills, church chat, etc. that no
matter how dark our life can seem at times - light ALWAYS wins. We have vowed to always
carry that light of Christ for one another so that we are able to help reignite each others'
hearts when things get hard. The love, kindness, friendship, and deep faith that this group has
for one another and for God is astounding. You should be so proud of them!
Lastly, our group is experiencing some very exciting growth. In less than a year, our Agape
Youth group has now DOUBLED the number of active youth attending our weekly activities!!
GOD IS SO GOOD! We cannot wait to see what else God has in store for us!
Thank you for all of your prayers and support.
Aly Shahan & the Agape Youth Group

Dear Family and Friends,
I used to work in a neonatal in-
tensive care and a pediatric unit
as a dietitian. In my work there
I was responsible for making
sure they received optimum nu-
trition so that these babies and
children would grow.
Sometimes when children came
into the hospital they were diag-
nosed as ‘Failure to Thrive’.
Some of these cases were so sad.
Some of these children weren’t
being nourished at home. Some
of these children weren’t being
loved at home. Did you know if
you emotionally neglect a child,
he/she won’t grow? My mother
always told us we needed 13
hugs for emotional growth! I may
be short of stature but on the in-
side I am tall!
Babies and children aren’t the
only ones who need emotional
care. We can be the ones who
share love with those in need
(everyone) and for when we can’t
be there physically, we can share
Jesus’ love with them. Knowing
that Jesus loves them uncondi-
tionally, wants the best for them
and is with them always may
help those who are failing to
thrive, find joy and growth. I en-
courage you to share a smile with
a stranger, a kind deed, a hug
when it seems needed and how
Jesus loves you and can love
them. Since becoming a disciple
of Jesus, I may still be short of
stature but inside, I’m a giant!
Grow with me and help others to
grow!

Classifieds
Thank you for your support of Project Transformation!
This year we hosted 63 children at Project Transformation. It was a great summer filled
with fun adventures, reading and growing.
We couldn’t have done it without you!
Each morning, Leroy and Joyce Peters were here to serve breakfast at 8 am. They were
joined by Linda Starling, Sherry Rodriguez, Sue Day, Sharon Sloan and Leslie Creech. Our
kids started their days off great and we never ran out of cereal thanks to you!
Each week a different church came in to read but some didn’t bring enough and we could al-
ways count on our own faithful volunteer readers to be here! Thank you to Mary Greenlee, Jo-
ann Carroll, Joyce Statton for their daily devotion to the kids and to the many others who
helped out whenever the call when out! You are an amazing church family.
Thank you to our drivers who were always available to transport our kids on field trips and
if it rained during the lunch hour. A special thank you to Melissa Collier for always being
available to drive at a drop of a raindrop!
Thank you to the Horizon class for helping us out with 24 back packs and our anonymous
donor of 25 more and those of you who generously donated backpacks. The kids will start
school off right!
It was a special summer and we have seen two of our families regularly in church. Thank you!
Amy and Richelle, PT Co Site Coordinators
Attention Ladies! Attention, ladies of all ages!
Looking for a time to get away and have some 'girl
time'? We will continue our Ladies Breakfast Out
this month on Saturday, August 30th at 9:00am on
Panera Bread on 104th & Penn.
We are discussing chapters 21-25 of the book,
"Love Does," by Bob Goff, but reading before you
come is not a requirement to attend! Our conversa-
tion covers many aspects of life, love, womanhood,
and our faith.
We hope you will join us for fellowship, fun, and
delicious breakfast!

What is Back to Church Sunday? It is the single largest annual community outreach in the nation,
sharing the simple message and mission of inviting everyone in
America Back To Church.
The campaign empowers churches and church members with the
tools they need to welcome their neighbors, friends and loved ones
back to church, while providing the unchurched with an easy way
to find a welcoming church in their community.
SO far this year 22,115 churches have signed up to participated.
Last year there was an average of a 25% increase in church attend-
ance on that day!
"82% of the unchurched are at least somewhat likely to attend
church if invited" –
Dr. Thom Rainer.
Advent Devotion Booklet
Yes, we are rushing the holiday season since it is only June. To have a quality product, we
are starting early. The Worship Committee would like to assemble an Advent devotion booklet
to be available for Advent 2014.
I know there are some great writers in our congregation. This can reflect any experience or
situation you may have had during the Advent season of a year. You can submit one, two or
three articles. Since we need one for each day of Advent, we are giving you plenty of notice so
you can begin to think and assimilate your ideas. Be creative, we can make this a reality.
Your article(s) should be submitted by Oct. 15, 2014.
Please submit your article(s) to [email protected]. I am hoping for a great response.
India Mission Dormitory Dedication
First Church is honored to send a team to India again in 2014 that will be returning to
Webb School for Girls. The team is planning a teaching and learning mission and will partici-
pate in the dedication of a girls' dormitory built at Kathlal, mostly through a generous grant
from the Woodworth Foundation. Participants will include Rev. Jeremy Basset, VIM Director,
who has been invited to give the message during the Vadodara Mission Sunday worship. The
mission is scheduled for November 28 through December 10.
If you would like to join or support this mission through sponsoring a team member, please
contact the team leaders: Harriet Parmar, 206-5275, Elisabeth Berry, 314-9852, or any mem-
ber of the missions committee. Please shower this mission with your prayers for
God's blessings.
Pull Yourself Together
You’ve heard it a million times. But things
just aren’t coming together. You’re still
hurting.
You need someone to listen and to care,
without judging or pushing you to get bet-
ter. A Stephen Minister can be this person
for you.
Contact the Stephen Ministry Program
Coordinator
Ken Quenzer at 640-3453
The Journey of Grief
Mark your calendar for Monday
evenings, at 7pm, from July 28th-
August 25th.
Grief occurs following a variety of loss-
es. We lose family members that we are
very close to and friends that we love. We
may experience grief after a natural disas-
ter, a serious illness, a job loss or almost
any event that causes change in our life.
The church would like to offer a safe
place to learn, to be aware of resources,
and to share with others experiencing
grief. We will meet in room 102 by the Ed-
ucation entrance across from the Sunday
School supply room.
Restore is a new small group for young adult
women that will meet one Thursday night per
month to get out of the house and enjoy fellowship
and fun! Some months we will participate in an
activity and some months we may meet for ice
cream or coffee. We want for this group to offer a
time to RESTORE your soul.
Our first gathering will be at Abrakadoodle on
Main Street (just down from the church) on
Thursday, August 14th at 7:30pm for Wine & Pal-
ette! Everything will be provided with your pay-
ment of $30. If cost is an issue, please contact Aly
Shahan.
We are so looking forward to sharing in this
ministry with you.
