DECEMBER 2013 THE CONSTELLATION PAGE 2

The time is HERE! Thanksgiving has passed and we are smack dab in the middle of silly season.

Be sure and join us at the Mt. Vernon Country Club for our annual Holiday festivity. Don’t forget to bring an unwrapped toy (or two...or three…) for F.A.C.E.S. and an appetite! January will bring us to the Wings Over the Rockies Museum at Lowry. After our museum visit we will meet at Helga’s German restaurant for a superb German meal and revelry about motorized machinery.

Don’t miss the January social at Jack & Grill in Westminster either. The authentic New Mexican food is both delicious and generous in portion. Even the heartiest appetites will leave with a box. The green chili is fantastic, too.

The Saturday drive on February 1st will lead us to Brecken-ridge to view the snow and ice sculptures created by sculptors from around the globe.

And once again, we land at the Mt Vernon Country Club on February 14th for the Valentine’s dinner. This is always a popular event and promises to be as delicious as ever.

For you airplane and spacecraft buffs, this is your event. If flying makes you feel uneasy, not to worry. These machines don't leave the ground. Denver's premier aircraft museum, housed in a hangar built in 1939, opened its doors in 1994. It even has an X-Wing fighter from the 1970s Star Wars movie. Come and join us for an interesting and informative indoor winter event. Bring the kids, grandkids, neighbor's kids, great grand . . . oops.

We will meet at the Museum at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Each participant will pay individually at the door when we meet on the 25th. For more information about the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, visit www.wingsmuseum.org

We will spend about 1 ½ hours at the museum and then be on our way over to Helga’s, 14197 East Exposition Avenue, Aurora 80012 (www.helgasdeli.com) for lunch at noon.

For more info contact Michael Davison at [email protected]. RESERVATION FORM ON PAGE 7

Saturday, February 1, 2014

Join us for a very special Saturday drive to Breckenridge

to view the snow sculptures at the

2014 Budweiser International Snow Sculpting Viewing

February 1, 2014 (weather permitting)

Meet at 8:00 a.m. (location TBD) for coffee and/or breakfast

We will depart promptly at 9:00 am for Breckenridge

2014 marks the 24th year of the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge. Each year in Breckenridge artists from around the country and the world gather to sculpt our beautiful Colorado snow into remarkable works of art.

This year (weather permitting) we are planning to take a trip to Breckenridge to view these magical sculptures. We will meet at a location (time and location to be determined) in the metro area for coffee before we head up the road to Breckenridge. At our coffee stop, you will be provided with directions, maps and parking information. Participants will be free to explore the festival and town on their own and enjoy lunch at one of the many eateries in the village.

We recommend that you dress very warm – we will have to do a fair amount of walking outside (winter boots are recommended) to enjoy the snow sculptures and the shops and restaurants on Main Street. Additional information will be provided in the January, 2014 issue of The Constellation, and on the MHS website at www.milehighmbca.org.

To register or if you’d like more information contact Deborah Hokanson at [email protected] .

A Frightfully Good Time on Halloween MBCA Meets……….THE MBCA Meets……….THE MBCA Meets……….THE MBCA Meets……….THE Z Z Z Z CLUBCLUBCLUBCLUB

Zounds!

IIII t was a dark and stormy night…..okay, dark, partly cloudy, kinda cold, and a little windy.

It was the night the MBCA met the Z club!

BBBB edlam ensued as the motley crew (not the band—that’s Crue...but I digress…) of 50 mem-bers from both clubs aimlessly cruised the dark-est areas of Boulder, as our tour host told sto-ries of ghouls, spirits and ghosts of every genre. The group was distracted from ghost hunting at one point by a sight from a window above the street—a young lady admiring her pink bra and new spandex undergarment in the mirror. No mere apparition was this….We have pictures!

PPPP hotos courtesy of Diane & Max Townsend, Tammy Sanders, & Michael Davison.

OOOO kay, so we were also distracted (this time involuntarily) by a cop (a real one) who insist-ed we were blocking traffic while our tour guide (pictured above left) told us tales of ghostly activity at one of the halls at CU. After a stern (and somewhat lengthy) lecture we were once again on our way into the night.

IIII t was a most wretchedly fun Halloween experience ...where Batman, Wonder Woman, Dracula, a guy in a kilt, a black cat, human pumpkins, a 60’s chick, and ghoulishly attired other be-ings rode aboard a strange bus in the eerie October night, as occasionally, off in the distance….the neigh of a horse was heard.

THE HAPPY CAR COLUMN ― By Niels Haubold

This Month: Glutton for Punishment

It happened again. Another heap has joined the livery. One has moved on to the country. While walking on the lot at work the other day, a guy asked me how much I’d take for my 1996 Ranger. Casually, I offered up the tidy sum of $2,000 dollars and kept on walking. The following day, he showed up with the money. Oops!

Turning the situation into a positive, I returned to the lot and eagerly began seeking a replacement. The cars on the lot were quickly thinned down to two likely suspects. A Buick Century, whose vintage I have forgotten, and a 2001 Saab convertible. Not being exactly the Buick type, and leery of the fact that the Power of Attorney associated with it was accompanied by a “Certificate of Death” had me leaning to the Saab.

Every conversation with a sane person ended with them telling me not to buy the Saab. In fact, I was asking the owner to part with it for their cost while they had a higher offer from a reliable source. I spent Sunday searching craigslist and soon learned that $2,000 does not buy much car on the open market. Monday rolled around and so did the decision that I could have the Saab for cost, plus tax, of course. Uh oh, now what?

My fear of parts availability was the furthest from the truth. I was certain that I would have to search high and low, and then purchase an entire climate control panel to replace the missing temperature control knob only to be rewarded with a brand new knob for $10. The glass “Aero” headlamp with the B.B. size hole in it is certain to be expensive, right? Not when you can buy the lens only, brand new OEM part for $42. The broken motor mounts (all of them!) are not quite as inexpensive, however, they are readily available.

It has become quite apparent that the fear of a defunct company has scared the value out of this car. The moral of the story (it has to have one since it doesn’t include a Benz) is that you should trust your gut. I scored an awesome beater for very little money because folks were scared of it.

Happy Cars = Happy Drivers Happy Motoring! — Niels
