The Mid-States MSDC was founded in 1976 and is a corporate membership organization whose membership represents many of the world’s top businesses. The common denominator they share is the desire to do business with Central Illinois, Indiana and Eastern Missouri MBEs and to continuously develop a qualified and diverse supplier base. Throughout our 38 year history we have facilitated more than $8 billion in purchases of goods and services from the minority business community by America’s major corporations.

Dear Corporate and MBE Partners,We are pleased to present the Mid-States Minority Supplier Development Council’s 2013 annual report. Last year we were focused on completing the integration of territories to expand our footprint to provide you with greater opportunities for our certified Minority Business Enterprises [MBEs] and continue assisting our corporate members in meeting their purchasing needs. Our efforts to continue connecting corporate members with MBEs through targeted outreach led to new partnerships and resulted in rewarding opportunities for our MBEs. In addition, we provided MBEs with opportunities to engage with corporate CEOs and learn how to take their businesses to the next level. Our Minority Business Development Center, operated through a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, continues to grow and produce great results. They assisted in creating more than 1,000 new jobs. We remain committed to global supplier development, economic vitality and ensuring the growth and sustainability of healthy communities. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,
Kenneth Beteet Carolyn E. Mosby Debra Simmons Wilson Board Chair President and CEO MBEIC Chair

IMSDC Transitions to Mid-States MSDCThe Indiana Minority Supplier Development Council changed its name to the Mid-States Minority Supplier Development Council [Mid-States MSDC] in November 2013. The name change reflects the expanded service area that now includes Central Illinois, Indiana and Eastern Missouri. The Mid-States MSDC, an affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council [NMSDC], is headquartered in Indianapolis with a regional office and staff in St. Louis, Missouri. “It was necessary to change the name because our footprint is now much larger. We were actively engaged in the restructuring of the NMSDC network and are happy to welcome certified Minority Business Enterprises [MBEs] and corporate partners from Central Illinois and Eastern Missouri,” said Carolyn Mosby, President and CEO of the Mid-States MSDC. In addition to the name change, there are expanded services for MBEs and corporate members. “We have identified services that we think will be beneficial to both MBEs and corporations. We’ve engaged our partners to ensure we are offering what they need and are driving continued supplier diversity opportunities, training, development and results,” said Mosby. An Implementation Team was established and is chaired by Cam Willis, former Vice President for OfficeMax. The team has corporate and MBE representation from Central Illinois, Indiana and Eastern Missouri. Their role has been to guide a smooth transition and assist with hiring additional staff, making recommendations on the new board structure, as well as assisting in the selection of additional office space and engaging community stakeholders in the expanded areas.

Indy Construction and Transportation Services Upon receiving MBE certification in early 2013, Indy Construction and Transportation Services experienced rewarding business opportunities, as shared by owner Dawndrell Reece:
“I am a strong supporter of the Mid-States MSDC because they believed in me. Several years after starting my business, I realized the importance of certifying my company as a Minority Business Enterprise. The staff at the Mid-States MSDC worked with me through the certifying process, and has consistently provided me with opportunities to grow as a CEO as well as giving my business credibility to work directly with large corporations as a supplier.
Indy Construction and Transportation Services is one of the fastest growing minority contractors in the Midwest. I think customers trust us because we give them high-quality service and they know we’ll deliver. The more creative we are with our solutions, the more attractive we are to our customers. Building strong relationships with our clients is the foundation of our business. We accomplish that by meeting client expectations first.
Now, with the guidance of the Mid-States MSDC, our client base has increased and stronger partnerships with leading corporations have been solidified. I am excited about the future of my business and our continued relationship with Mid-States MSDC.“

MBDA Business CenterIn 2011, Mid-States MSDC was awarded a $1.1 million grant by the U.S. Department of Commerce to operate a Minority Business Development Agency [MBDA] Business Center in Indiana. The Indianapolis Center is one of 30 centers nationwide funded by MBDA and serves the minority business community by providing solutions to the challenges of a growing business. The Center provides assistance with financing, procurement, operations, planning, management and marketing with a concentration on minority businesses with at least $1 million in revenue. In addition, the Center assists in facilitating access to credit, capital and markets — all critical to stimulate growth.

Success Story: HG MC Supply, Inc.MBDA worked collaboratively with strategic financial partners and HG MC Supply (dba HG Metals) to obtain the capital needed to grow the business. With the introduction of First Merchants Bank, HG MC Supply successfully secured a capital award of $350,000. This transaction assisted the company in the creation of two new jobs and retention of two.
Cynthia Gardner, President of HGMC Supply, said, “The MBDA Center, under the leadership of Project Director, James Knight, Sr., took the time to become acquainted with our firm and our needs. Mr. Knight met with me several times to identify our priorities and facilitated my introduction to two financial institutions; one of which provided the capital needed to support our 2013 growth. Mr. Knight continues to show interest in our progress and has been an invaluable resource.”

Duke Realty Mentoring RelationshipWith more than 40 years’ experience managing some of the largest and highest profile commercial properties in the country, Duke Realty has developed a solid base of best practices for property management. So when Eskenazi Health, its joint venture partner on the Fifth Third Faculty Office Building [FOB] , asked for a commitment to mentor a diverse company involved in property management, Duke Realty readily agreed. After reviewing responses to the RFP and interviewing each company, Duke Realty and Eskenazi Health selected DTM Real Estate Services [DTM], a full-service commercial real estate firm with operations in Indianapolis, Indiana, and three other states.
“We are constantly looking to learn about more efficient best practices and felt that it would be a positive experience to work with Duke Realty, a nationally recognized leader in property management,” said Ezra Burdix, President of DTM. “After hearing about the opportunity through the Mid-States MSDC, we responded to the RFP and were excited to learn that we were selected. Though we have experience managing Class A, medical office buildings, we want to sharpen our skill set so that we can grow this segment of our business and hone best practices and efficiencies.”
“Our property management policies and processes are among the best in the business, having evolved from managing thousands of properties—currently more than 152 million square feet—across the country,” said Ryan Rothacker, Vice President, Asset Management and Customer Service for Duke Realty’s healthcare properties in the Midwest. “By working closely with Diana Cunningham, Senior Property Manager for the Fifth Third FOB, DTM can see first-hand what goes into managing a Class A, five-story, 273,873-square-foot building master leased to a large hospital system.”
Tiffany Johnson, Property Manager, is representing DTM at the Fifth Third FOB. In the first year of the program, focus is placed on daily operations, including tenant relations, interaction with maintenance technicians, managing subcontractors and tracking operating expenses. In the second year, property-level accounting, budgeting and financial reporting training will be integrated into the property manager’s responsibilities. In the third year, DTM will be fully integrated in the management and operations of the building, handling all property management aspects on a daily basis with support from Duke Realty as needed.
“We don’t take our experience and know-how for granted. We fully understand the need to find ways for ‘better’ best practices to emerge. The opportunity to see our profession through a national leading company’s lens will help us fulfill our ongoing commitment to excellence for our customers,” added Burdix. “We respect Duke Realty’s wealth of experience and the insight it will provide our company to expand our processes and procedures. This is an excellent and unique opportunity for our company.”

Headquartered in Brentwood, Tennessee, and lead by President and CEO Maria Teresa “Tera” Vazquez, Guy Brown has continued to prove its business model of partnering with “Best in Class” companies to continue to bring value and innovative solutions to its clients. Starting business in 1997 as a remanufacturer of printer toner cartridges, Guy Brown soon established their brand with many major office products companies and started to realize the need for diverse suppliers by the end-user for office products solutions.
Through listening to the voice of the customer, they initiated their Office Products Program in 2003—targeted at the end-user—and have experienced tremendous growth every year since. Guy Brown is now a provider of Promotional Marketing Programs and fully integrated JAN-SAN and Break Room Solutions. Their continued search for value added, cost saving programs for customers lead the company to a new partner, Duramark Technologies.
Headquartered in Westfield, Indiana, and lead by founders Bill Bussick and Steve Diller, DuraMark Technologies is a leading solution provider to the industrial decal and labelling market. Fuelled by their patented process technology and proprietary production capabilities, DuraMark has become a leader in the market for production of safety, instructional and branding labels for OEM equipment manufacturers. MBE CEO Academy a SuccessLast year’s MBE CEO Academy was a huge success! Thirteen successful MBE CEOs took advantage of the opportunity to dialogue with four of Indiana’s top corporate CEOs. The quarterly meetings were a great opportunity for our MBEs to gain insight on taking their companies to the next level. While already very successful multi-million dollar enterprises, these MBEs also connected with each other and shared some of their own best practices in running their businesses.
The inaugural class enjoyed the Academy so much that they decided to keep the group together and as a result, will participate in the MBE CEO Exchange program in 2014. Congratulations to our 2013 MBE CEO Academy graduating class!
