Chairman’s Report for the October 2020 meeting

1. Chairman's Report

Midway Bonsai Society

Hi All

A year ago was given the chairman position for the first time. It has honestly been a

pleasure. The committee members are all great to work with.

The year hasn’t been an easy one as the Pandemic changed the way we all interact. We

really did come together though as we hosted virtual meetings from May to September,

where different club members showed us their collections. I would like to thank Jonathan,

Oom Hennie, Pieter and Gareth for hosting us on these zoom meetings. Previous to this we

had Richard host the club at his home and Oom Hennie give a talk on Mame’s. Another

notable meeting was when we had Jandre give us a demo in February.

I wish all of you a good festive season and happy holidays.

Hoping to see everyone at the next and last meeting for 2020. We normally do a year end

party separate to the meeting in November but this year we are combing the two due to

social distancing and the pandemic. The club will provide a drink and boerie roll, please bring

your own drinks if the one isn’t enough. Please also bring any trees you want to work on. We

will start at the usual 12am.

Regards

Thivern Pillay

To the right: This little cactus gives me fresh new blooms every year. Sometimes the things we meet that looks the most damaged and ugly, hides the most beautiful treasures.

Below: The base of this Spekboom is already well developed. It was in a root-bound pot with very little soil left, We lifted it and replanted it at the correct angle on its journey to become a cascade or semi cascade. The root flare can now be developed.

I love working on Spekboom (Portulacaria afra). I would love to become a Spekboom master one day. This year I am blessed to witness on of my favourite trees flowering. I will be taking pictures regularly. If I remember from my Spekboom cascade that flowered a year a two ago, the flowers last quite a while.

We had a very good turn out in our October meeting. It was good to see everybody again.

I would however like to put a motion forward that out next meeting be held in the pool. This heatwave is killing me. Below is the open flowers from my Spekboom Cascade taken in 2017.

During this Lockdown we as bonsai enthusiast have been blessed to be able to spend more time with our trees and the people that we love. Thivern lead from the from and we had Zoom meetings every month and learned a few things about each other we did not know. Gareth has a wonderful collection he shared with us on one meeting. The quality of his trees and the amount of them was a pleasant surprise.
