AN EXPLANATION OF HOW THE LAW OPERATES

I PRESUME that most of our members realize that we receive hundreds of letters each week and

many telegrams each day from our members asking us to tell them how they can quickly and

efficiently relieve a hysical condition that has come uon them! or asking similar advice in regard to

the treatment of some hysical condition" #ery often! such telegrams! however! ask us to give our

hel in an emergency! and these telegrams are immediately turned over to the highest officers of the

organization and then assigned to workers in the $elfare %eartment" Some telegrams occasionally

call for drastic and immediate hel of a very imortant or serious nature! and these are given the

ersonal attention of the officers"

&he results of the activities of the $elfare %eartment bring us hundreds of letters that read like

testimonials of miracles! and if all of these were to be ublished in a book! it would sound like the

most marvelous work in the world" &oo many of our members take this sort of work for granted and

think that an e'ression is not necessary! and seak of the results only casually in connection with

their reorts" (ll! however! seem to look uon mental healing and esecially the rocesses used by

us at )eadquarters as miracles" &o us! there is nothing miraculous about the healing done through

the Rosicrucian methods! and each and every member can learn to do this work without the hel of

anyone else" (t times! however! some results do seem like those reorted in the *ible as miracles

and none of us ever fail to marvel at the goodness and efficiency of +od,s laws"

-et me tell you the story of one interesting incident in this connection" .ne Sunday afternoon while

working in my studio at a ainting! a messenger from the Information *ureau of )eadquarters came

to me with a telegram he had /ust received" &elegrams come to us very quickly over the telehone

wires! and are received at all hours of the day and night" &his telegram read like this0

1%octor says I have very serious condition in gall bladder and states that oeration is necessary and

will make decision about it tomorrow morning" (m the only suort of three children" Please hel"1

2ertainly! that was an emergency call" ( woman burdened with the suort of three children and

devoting her life to their welfare! threatened with an oeration that would be very costly and mean

searation from her children for many weeks! is a serious combination of conditions" I am sure that



every one of our members will admit that" $e did not sto to figure what might have been the cause

of the condition in the gall bladder or what result would come from the oeration3 all we knew for

the moment was that the condition in the gall bladder must be instantly healed or cured! and the

oeration revented" I! therefore! sent her a telegram and told her to get in sychic contact with me

at 4055 o,clock that afternoon for ten minutes! and do the same thing at 6055 o,clock and 4055 o,clock

the ne't day! and when the doctor came to absolutely refuse to have any oeration" I followed the

telegram with a letter from the %irector of our $elfare %eartment! giving her further instructions

on how to contact us at certain eriods for three days and assuring her that we would do our utmost

to revent the oeration" &hen we roceeded to use the Rosicrucian rinciles" So much for our art

of the case"

8our days later! the sister who sent the telegram wrote the following letter to our $elfare

%eartment0

1$hen I sent my telegram last Sunday! the doctor had /ust told me there was no hel for me e'cet

through an oeration" )e said that his tests stated that I had infection of the gall bladder" I don,t

recall the name of the disease" I know I was suffering so intensely I couldn,t move and could hardly

breathe" 9our answering telegram came a few minutes before 4055 o,clock" I sat in concentration

from 4055 to 40:5! as you instructed" &he ne't concentration eriod at :5055 o,clock came when I had

so much fever it was difficult for me to hold my mind on any thought and to retain consciousness" I

actually fell into a slee or a faint while trying to make the attemt" $hen I awoke! it was :055

o,clock in the morning" I knew that the gall bladder had begun to drain! for the intense ain was

relieved and the swelling was reduced" $hen the doctor called later on in the morning! he was

uzzled to find me better! and after e'amination said that no oeration would be necessary" )e said

it was very unusual for the gall bladder to drain when in such a condition as mine was" &he condition

has imroved right along each day! and I e'ect to sit u today and be able to go back to work on

Monday! the beginning of the coming week" I can,t e'ress what a wonderful thing you have done

for me nor my dee gratitude for it" I had gone to ieces over so much ain and your hel was so

quick and effective" I feel disgraced as a Rosicrucian student to have had such an illness befall me!

&his letter from (rizona was brought to my desk in order that I might know how the sister felt in

regard to the work! because it is a law of the 2osmic that unless a erson e'resses in some way

areciation for such individual hel on each stage of rogress made in the solution of a roblem! no

further hel can be e'ected" &his is not a rule or law that (M.R2 has made and if we had our way!

it would be greatly modified in many cases" &his letter of areciation! however! warranted me in

continuing to the ne't stage of hel for her raid imrovement" 7ow! let us see another angle to this

tyical case" &he atient has told us what the doctor said when he called in the morning and found

that her condition had changed" 7ow! let us see what the doctor would say to us if we asked himwhat he thought of the whole case and its result"

&he doctor! sitting down oosite me and looking me squarely in the eyes with that understanding

attitude that intimates that now he will be erfectly frank and honest! roceeds to seak as follows0

1Really! I was somewhat surrised when I called on the atient the ne't morning and found that she

was feeling so much better" I had diagnosed the case and was quite sure that the inflammation! the

congestion! swelling! and resence of us in the bladder indicated the necessity for an immediate

oeration" .f course! after all I am only human and I may have mis/udged the intensity of the

suffering as well as the intensity of the inflammation and swelling" She may have had after all only a

assing attack couled with a cold that may have caused some of the ain! and! of course! the

resence of a little us would create as much fever as would a great deal of us" In other words! the

fact that she had ain and fever does not rove that there was a great deal of us or that there was a

serious condition" &he woman was very an'ious to have immediate hel and relief and! of course! I

know that an oeration is the only thing that will cure such a condition when it is as intense and as

serious as I thought it was! and that was why I conscientiously recommended the oeration" $hen I

called and found that a change had either taken lace or that the temorary condition had assed

and that the little congestion was being relieved through nature,s own rocesses of draining when

necessary! I naturally agreed that an oeration was not necessary and! therefore! ostoned the

lans for the oeration" .f course! you cannot e'ect me to admit! let alone believe! that your

thoughts or your concentration! or whatever it is that you did in 2alifornia! had any effect uon the

gall bladder in (rizona" &he woman,s own mind may have some slight effect at times uon arts ofher body and I am willing to admit that a cheerful attitude is better than a desondent one in any

case of illness! but most certainly! I cannot conceive of any effect uon her condition having been

roduced by anything that you may have done in 2alifornia" 9ou may be very well;learned in

athology and hysiology! as I note from your comments on the case! and you may understand the

oeration of the vital forces and healing rinciles of nature in the human body! but you certainly

cannot know any law or rocess that will ermit of your mind affecting an actual hysical condition in

a distant state" &he whole case is merely one of mistaken diagnosis and I am glad that the atient is

better"1

7ow comes to us an intimate friend of the atient who witnessed much that occurred" )er reort

reduced to a few words would read as follows0

1I saw the atient in intense suffering for a number of days" &he ain began slowly in a definite area

of the body and before we could realize how serious it was! the atient was losing strength not only

through the intense suffering but through the evident lack of functioning of certain arts or organs ofthe body" &here is no question but what the atient was in a mighty serious condition when the



hysician was called in! and we were imressed with his very serious attitude and his statement that

nothing short of an oeration could relieve the condition" )e sent considerable time in asking

questions! investigating local conditions in the body! and in diagnosing the entire case" )e was

ositive in his analysis of what was wrong and his statements agreed with what the atient had

discerned from her own senses" (fter his dearture! the atient was frantic with the thought that an

oeration would have to be erformed and with the realization of the effect this would have uon

her ersonal affairs! her finances! her absence from home at a hosital! and her care of the children"

&here is no question in my mind but what the doctor meant what he said when he lainly stated that

there was nothing else that he or medicine could do! for the condition in the gall bladder had gone so

far that only an oeration could relieve the atient" )e was to call the ne't morning and arrange for

the accommodations at the hosital and the hour of the oeration" &he atient suffered intense ain

and a high fever on Sunday evening and night u to the time that she awakened at about <055 o,clock

in the morning" (t that time she found she was being relieved of her ain and fever! and when the

doctor came later in the morning! he was more than surrised and greatly in doubt when the atient

said she felt better" )e demanded to make an e'amination to see whether the atient was trying todeceive him and was considerably uzzled to find that there was an actual change in her hysical

condition" I have noticed that the atient is imroving each hour and each day since she sent the

telegram to the (M.R2 )eadquarters"1

7ow the imortant matter before us for consideration is simly this0

$as there a miracle erformed and did our rinciles actually roduce any real effect= &he doctor!

reresenting not only a great many in his rofession! but reresenting thousands uon thousands of

average human beings! says that it is imossible for any hysical effect to be roduced through

mental concentration at a distance" .n the other hand! the atient! who is the best witness in any

case and an observer of the entire situation! is inclined to believe that the Rosicrucian methods did

roduce a change in the situation"

7ow let us analyze what was actually done" Regardless of what the atient was suffering from and

what was the cause of her suffering! or the remote cause of her hysical condition! the fact of the

matter is that a resonsible hysician had definitely diagnosed the condition as an infected gall

bladder requiring an immediate oeration" Even the atient was little concerned with the

athological or histological nature of her condition! and she even forgot the name of the condition as

given by the hysician when he e'amined her" Really! she cared little whether the cause of her

suffering was oison in the foot! the intestines! or the gall bladder" &he cause might even have been

an error in her mind and not a hysical! mortal cause at all" So far as we! at )eadquarters! were

concerned! we were not imressed by the statement in the telegram that the atient was suffering

from an infected gall bladder or from any other thing of a definite nature" (ll that we were

concerned with was that the dear sister was in an inharmonious state and that she was facing not an

infected gall bladder! or a high fever! or oison of the hysical body! or suffering of the mortal body!but facing a threatened oeration with the attending enormous e'ense! absence from home! and



serious effect uon the three children whose sole suort she was" $hether we believe that the

hysical body can have disease or not! and whether we believe that the diagnosis of the hysician

was an error of his thinking or not! or whether the whole condition was one of mortal thought in the

atient,s mind or not! the outstanding fact that was not imaginary! or mental! or sychic! or an error!

but actual and real! was that an oeration was to be erformed which must be avoided and

revented"

.ur treatment rocesses did not attemt to visualize and concentrate uon any us or oison in the

gall bladder! or uon any congested condition there! or uon the fever and ain that the atient was

suffering! but was concentrated uon the thought that the atient must be relieved of any mortal

condition of any cause and any nature! and that she must become so well and harmonious! and

eaceful with the 2osmic vibrations! that no oeration would be necessary" $e did not attemt to

tell the 2osmic or instruct the 2osmic to drain the oison out of the gall bladder if there was any

oison there! or to sto the ain if there was any fever! or reduce the fever! for we know that the

2osmic knows what to do better than we! and furthermore! that the 2osmic would be more intimate

with the real cause of the condition and what was to be changed than any doctor or any mystic" .ur

rocess! therefore! was to lace this sister in harmony with the constructive! creative! loving!

eaceful vibrations of the 2osmic and allow the natural laws to ursue their normal rocess without

any interference! whether that interference was due to a hysical condition or a mental condition on

the art of the atient" If there was any miracle in the change that took lace! it was the natural

miracle of +od,s magnificent creative! corrective! harmonic laws" It was a +od miracle manifesting as

a miracle of natural law" +od erformed one of his usual miracles and all raise must be to +od for

any cure that was effected" $hat was actually done! however! and what the atient is most

interested in is that the threatened oeration was revented" &he doctor may deny that any hysical

change was brought about in the atient,s condition through our rocesses! but he cannot getaround the fact that the oeration did not take lace" )e may smile and say that nature steed in

and corrected what was merely a temorary condition and which he thought was a ermanent one"

*ut the fact still remains that even if this is true! the oeration was revented" &hose who look

askance on mystical and metahysical healings may say that we did nothing! no one did anything!

and that the atient /ust simly got well! but nevertheless! such ersons will have to admit that by

sending the atient a telegram and telling her not to have the oeration! we revented the

oeration" (fter all is said and done! this sister in (rizona aealed to us to hel her avoid the

oeration and avoid the tremendous e'ense! and the effect the oeration and e'ense would have

uon the three children" &his was done and in doing this! we rest with the satisfaction of having

answered the sister,s lea and accomlished comletely what she requested" Some may call it a

miracle! but we simly call it another illustration of the Rosicrucian alication of %ivine laws in a

brotherly! symathetic good;will manner"

I might cite hundreds of other cases! for this is merely one of many each week and each month that

are reorted to our $elfare %eartment" .nly recently! a sister in another western state was

threatened with the amutation of her leg because a fractured bone refused to heal" )er brother

telegrahed us that three different oerations had been erformed in which the bone had been

scraed and in each case! the infected area grew larger! and that now nothing was left but to

amutate the leg above the knee! and she was in the hosital at that very moment with rearation

being made for the amutation" $e telegrahed to insist uon the oeration being delayed twenty;

four hours" &his demand on the art of the brother so annoyed the hysicians at the hosital that



they ordered the atient to leave the hosital then and go home! for if they could not erform the

oeration and amutate the leg! there was nothing left for them to do" &he atient was taken home!

and thirty hours later an >;ray icture was taken which showed a considerable change in the

diagnosed condition" &wenty;four hours later another >;ray was taken showing continued

imrovement" It was then decided by the hysicians that after all! amutation would not be

necessary and that evidently nature was going to finally heal the condition after eleven months of

suffering and bone scraing" &hree weeks later! the atient was out and around at her daily affairs!

and there is no longer any danger of future infection or the threatened amutation"

(nother similar case of bone trouble with a threatened amutation recently brought to our

attention resulted the same way" $e do not sto to analyze what the 2osmic did in changing the

hysical conditions in these cases! for all we are concerned with is the fact that the oeration was

revented" I could cite cases of goitres! ulcers! and similar conditions of the body where oerations

were revented by treatments given by us at )eadquarters or by our members in the higher grades

of the work"

&here is /ust one other oint to be considered" &he good sister in (rizona was saved many hundreds

of dollars through the revention of the oeration" 2ertainly! that saving more than ays her dues in

the (M.R2 organization for many years to come" &he many whose legs and arms have been saved

from amutation will never be convinced by any of the scoffing remarks of sketics that membershi

in such an organization as (M.R2 is an e'ensive thing or a commercial roosition" Members who

are inclined to think that they are aying for their lectures and aying for the corresondence

received from us! and aying for these things in a manner that may aear to be e'ensive at times

should ause in their reasoning and realize that their monthly dues include far more than the mere

receit of lectures! lessons! and manuscrits! and that the good;will and welfare service! and the

efficient hel that is always at their beck and call is something that cannot be aid for with dollars

and cents! and something that can never be estimated in its true value until a sudden emergency or

critical condition arises when such hel is needed"

If there is any miracle connected with the demonstrations of natural and siritual law! it is the

miracle of having the demonstration occur and the efficient service rendered when it is most needed

and rendered in an unselfish! symathetic! brotherly manner"
