As the weather turns colder and we prepare for the inevitable onset of colder weather, we would like to offer out a couple of reminders to our students and parents. First, if weather conditions deteriorate and require us to cancel school, parents will be notified using our automated caller system. This call is generally made within minutes of the decision being made to cancel school. Since timely notification is important to all who must arrange childcare on those days, we ask that parents notify our office staff if there have been any changes to contact information since August, so that we may make sure that our information is current. Second, any days of school missed due to inclement weather will be made up at the end of the school year. Presently our last day of school is scheduled for May 22nd, but if we were to incur a snow day, that last day would move to the 23rd. The next day missed would move us to the 24th and so on. Finally, as the weather and driving conditions worsen, be sure to mention to your student that if they walk to school, that they should take extra care when crossing the street. We have had a student hit on 84th St. already this year and would very much like to avoid any future accidents. Happy Holidays!

Season’s Greetings and Welcome from Ralston Middle School! As the weather turns colder and we prepare for the inevitable onset of colder weather, we would like to offer out a couple of reminders to our students and parents. First, if weather conditions deteriorate and require us to cancel school, parents will be notified using our automated caller system. Ms. In PE class with Mrs. Wallerstedt, we have been playing Team Handball. The Team Handball unit emphasizes teamwork skills. The students have been doing a great job of working together and utilizing the skills of the players on their team. In December, we will begin our Aerobic/Health unit. At the end of the unit the students will get in groups and teach an aerobic activity to the class.

Mr. Petrosik's language arts class has started a historical fiction project that will take us up to winter break. Students will be reading historical fiction novels and creating Google doc presentations to present to their class. Students will be working on numerous language arts and social studies skills as well as developing research/note taking techniques and properly citing sources.

Maldonado's Mathematics classes just finished their Integers Unit and will move into the Ratios and Percents Unit. They will learn new concepts such as Unit Rate and Unit Price. They will also convert percents to decimals and fractions and spend time memorizing common equivalents. Once we are finished with this unit, we will spend the prior to our Christmas break going over test taking strategies in preparation for the State Test in April.

Mr. Brommer’s science class has been discussing heredity and genes. Mendel’s basic principles of genetics have been a key focus, along with dominant/recessive genes and how they are passed on from one generation to the next. Students will be using their knowledge of genotypes (gene combinations) and phenotypes (physical characteristics that are seen) to do a creature heredity activity titled “Jurassic Park.” Once complete, we will discuss and model the first two steps of the scientific method: Stating the Problem (Question) and Forming a Hypothesis.

In Social Studies over the past few weeks, we have been studying the ancient Hebrews and the development of the religion of Judaism. Students learned about how this religion started, as well as some of the basic beliefs of Judaism. We were fortunate to have a guest speaker, Mr. Ophir Palmon, who was born in Israel, visit with our students and answer their questions about life in Israel and the Jewish religion. The unit ended with a lesson on the current conflict between Israel and Palestine. Next in World History, students will be learning about the civilizations of ancient India and the development of the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism.

In Language Arts with Mrs. Mossman, we have been reading The Lightning Thief and working on vocabulary and reading enrichment skills as we have read the book. The students have done a wonderful job and have really enjoyed the book. We will begin projects over the book and Greek Mythology soon.

Mrs. Scherzberg's Study Skills Class for Writing has been studying the parts of speech. Students are expected to identify words according to the parts of speech and use them correctly to create sentences. Students have also been introduced to diagramming sentences in order to visually separate and connect these parts of speech. Students will then write sentences following specific patterns, followed by an introduction to the five-paragraph essay.

Ms. Charlesworth's Reading class is attacking comprehension by applying skills of inference and drawing conclusion! Applying these in our daily life is automatic, but slowing down to identify details and explain the thinking behind the answers takes thinking to another level. We have wrapped up making predictions and finding word meaning through context.

In Social Studies we learned about the early Hebrews, and also about the conflict between Israel and Palestine. We are now starting our unit about Ancient India.

In Science we are learning about reproduction at the cell level.

In Mrs. Sheets' Language Arts, we are each picking our own fiction book to read and use to review the elements of fiction.

In Mr. Lacey's Language Arts, we are learning about Greek mythology. We are creating a tri-fold and making our own god.

In Math, we are learning about proportions. We will be doing a project comparing our hand size to Michael Jordan's hand size using proportions.

Team Ice is skating into December in style. There are many cool lessons going on such as the Data Posters in Math and creative writing projects in AP English.

Science classes learned some new technology working on their phases of matter projects and are now starting to learn about Life Science.

History is working on understanding more about the presidential election and the Constitution.

Language Arts classes are finishing reading "The Giver" and

Algebra is in the middle of a unit about slope. It is looking to be a great month for Team 8A.

Team 8B is on Fire

Happy Holidays from Team 8B

Team Fire is really in the christmas cheer. We are leading the school in HyVee receipts we are over $15,000.00, so keep sending them in!!!!

In math classes, Miss Penn, our student teacher from UNO will be finishing up December 14th and graduating. She has done an outstanding job and we wish her the best of luck in finding a job and success. So that means Ms. Henely is taking back over. In Pre-Algebra we have finished up our surveys and projects. Students seem to really like this unit, maybe because of all the eating involved. We will be exploring geometry through December. In Algebra, we are deep into slope. There are many formulas to know and remember. They too will be doing a project related to slope.

In Language Arts, Mrs. George shared that the Language Arts AP class, after reading two dystopian books, will be creating their own Utopian Society. In Language Arts they are rapping up indendent book projects. They have begun the Holocaust and Anne Frank unit. So those students going to Washington D.C. will have a lot to look forward to the Holocaust Museum.

In Science, Miss Rerucha said they will be starting Life Science. They will be looking at the characteristics of Life and what makes them alive.

And in History with Mr. Reischl said they are reading George Washington's Sock, this is a novel about George Washingtons life experiences with the constitution and going over the Constitution. Another great thing to see in DC!!!!

We will be doing a homework incentive day at the end of the quarter on December 21st. We want all students to complete their work and be off the D and F list!!!!!

Congratulations to 7th graders Michaela Lentsch and Grace Evertson who won the cardboard cutouts of Edward Cullen and Jacob Black that have been a fixture in the Ralston Middle School Media Center since Twilight first became popular. These lucky ladies won by correctly supplying the answers to the weekly Twilight Trivia questions for four weeks in a row. Thank you to Ms. Cassie at Baright Public Library for supplying the weekly questions.

The Lunch Bunch Book Club, along with the RHS Ralston Readers Book Club, will be attending opening night of "The Hobbit" at AkSarBen Cinema on December 14th. It's not too late to purchase a ticket and join in on the fun. Questions concerning this outing should be directed to Ms. Olsen, RMS Media Specialist.

This photrealistic portrait of Oli Sykes was done using the "grid technique". Jamie chose to draw Oli because his music has been an inspiration to her in her life. She also wanted to draw his tattoos, which she thinks looks cool!
