MISSION OF THE DISCIPLESMATT. 10:1-15, MK 6:7-13, LK 9:1-16

10:1-20

The mission of the Disciples, is about Jesus sending His followers on two separate occasions to go and preach to the people about God’s kingdom. The two missions were aimed at acquainting Jesus

with the level of preparedness and ability of His Disciples to handle the gospel message after He

might have joined His father in heaven.

Mission of the TwelveMatt 10:1-13, Mk 6:7-13, Lk 9:1-16

N.B – apart from the account of Matthew, Jesus sent out the twelve Apostles in pairs after giving them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out and to heal every disease and infirmity (free of charge).

However, they were strictly charged not to go among the Gentiles but to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Again, apart from the account of Mark, the Apostles were also charged not to take anything for their journey .

And anywhere they went, they should stay there; But if they are rejected, they should shake off the dust of

their sandals as a testimony against the place.

Mission of the SeventyLuke 10:1-20

Only Luke, gave an account of this mission which is often referred to as ‘mission to the Gentiles’.

They were sent in pairs to go ahead of every town and place where Jesus would later go to preach.

They were charged not to carry any purse, bag, sandals, nor salute anyone on the road due the urgency of the mission.

Any house they entered, they were to say, “Peace be to this house”.

If they were well received, they were to heal the sick and tell the people that the kingdom of God has come near to them.

But if they were not received, they should dust off their feet and go as a testimony against the house.

For he who hears you hears me and whoever rejects you also rejects me as well as He who sent me.

Achievements of the Twelve and Seventy Disciples

While the Twelve disciples were able to cast out many demons and healed many sick people that were anointed with oil

The Seventy returned with joy saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to using your name.”

Jesus replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions and over all th power of the enemy and nothing shall hurt you.

Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits were subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven”.
