A large majority of the Polish migrated to the UK after the enlargement of the European Union in 2004. The cost of living became too high in Poland and many attempted to make better lives for themselves. London was seen as the city of

opportunity, but for many this wasn’t the case

Page 3: The Misunderstood

The cost of London living was unfeasible for most and Gloucestershire was an area of interest to many migrants. Leszek, (pictured right) his son Tadeusz (left) and his wife Rita moved to the UK in 2011

Page 4: The Misunderstood

Many migrants came to Gloucestershire because the county was seen as having many opportunities for immigrants. Once a large minority had settled, often they would be later join by friends and family

The Polish learn English whilst in education so English speaking countries are always priority for migration. Unfortunately the level of teaching is often low as the teachers are not always correctly educated in English themselves

Page 6: The Misunderstood

As Tadeusz grows up he is learning both English and Polish, with Leszek and Rita taking him to Poland they hope he will retain aspects of both his cultural backgrounds. Rita worries about Tadeusz as she thinks he knows better English than

Polish

The Police are known to be violent and abusive in Poland, the Polish come over to the UK and believe our Police are the same. As a result, trust is an inherent issue

Case reviews published since 2010 highlighted the way children were affected during the movement of countries. In multiple reviews,‘Children died following a lengthy period of abuse or neglect, which was not picked up due to social

isolation or family movement between countries’

13 years ago Britain was a favorable place for migrants, people appreciated the Polish and immigrants had a lot of jobs available to them. Employers have now been known to discriminate against the Polish and again favor the British

Page 10: The Misunderstood

Rita and Leszek were fortunate in being able to find jobs and begin building their careers soon after arriving in the UK. This has provided them with a homely, safe environment for their son

Page 11: The Misunderstood

In 2009 the economic collapse meant that the Polish did not have the jobs to come into, the idea of Britain having large prospects had vanished

Page 12: The Misunderstood

Still, migrants are coming over from Poland in belief there is work and an easier life for them in the UK. Some would say theEuropean American dream

Page 13: The Misunderstood

Qualifications achieved in Poland do not always translate well when applying for work in the UK. This can lower opportunities for high powered jobs, putting further stress on families

Page 14: The Misunderstood

Rita: ‘I think the worst thing is that my son doesn’t have proper family, grandparents and aunties etc. We are alone in the UK’

Page 15: The Misunderstood

Rita is a copywriter and works from home, she has ambitions of becoming a Polish to English translator. At the moment her priorities lie in caring for her son Tadeusz. Being at home throughout the day, Rita would like work that allows her to travel

Page 16: The Misunderstood

Rita: ‘I came to UK in 2012. I went by car with my friend - 25 hours in car across Europe and I was pregnant. It was crazy idea but I couldn't go by plane (late stage pregnancy). The reason was Leszek, he wanted to stay in UK, that's why I went. I

decided we should be together’

Raising a child in foreign country can prove difficult, as parents have no preconceptions of growing up in the UK. The education system that we take for granted can involve a sharp learning curve

Page 18: The Misunderstood

Poland is modern but the competition between people causes problems, they fight over wealth and try to keep up with each other. This means many are riddled with debt

Page 19: The Misunderstood

Although Rita’s primary work is copywriting, she also writes articles for a regional magazine. The magazine named Polmaghelps the Polish community to integrate into British society. Polmag provides information about local events and the best

ways to excess the support that could be vital for recent Polish migrants

Lezsek first arrived in the UK for the first time in November 2007, initially he was working on contract jobs whilst travelling. Later on each year he would have work in various places around the UK, at one point with a company providing retail

support for the likes of John Lewis and Debenhams

Page 21: The Misunderstood

Rita has began going to parenting classes to give her son the best upbringing possible; Leszek is currently heavily involved in community projects whilst working full time as a social worker and their son Tadeusz is making vast improvements in both

his English and Polish
