The Roxby Downs Kindergarten recently created abook for BHP Billiton to say thank you for funding their printing and

networking upgrade.Th e book features the children’s interpreta-

tion of what happens on site at the Olympic Dam mine; it includes the children’s stories, pictures and photographs of them re-enacting what their parents do at work.

BHP Billiton has ordered enough of the books, created by Snapfi sh, so a copy can be placed in each crib room on site.

Roxby Downs Kindergarten Director, Ker-ryn Jones, said the children have been work-ing on a project about what happens at the

Olympic Dam mine and what their parents do. Part of the project has been to document their thoughts and drawings about what they imagine.

“Th e children dress up in their mine outfi ts and act out what they imagine Mum and Dad do when they go to work at the mine,” Ms Jones explained.

“Th e mine is such a large part of Roxby and the children’s lives.”

Ms Jones was impressed by how factual some

of the children’s ideas were, one child stating there is a truck names Whoopee and anoth-er explaining a fi re that does not go out, also known as the smelter.

In the book Tait states, “My Dad used to work for BHP. He tells the diggers and the peo-ple where to dig. Th ey’re digging for treasure… golden treasure… it’s buried under the ground. Th ere are big loaders and cranes to lift the dirt up. It’s really dirty out there. Th ere’s treasure chests full of gold and some necklaces.”

Jace said, “Th ey make smoke from burning fi re rocks like a volcano. Th ey never put it out! Dad loves his work.”

Apparently there are even crystals at Olym-pic Dam. “Th ey have the mine and gold and crystals. Th ey have to smash them for everyone to share,” says Henry.

Scott said his Mum “makes copper. It is a beautiful kind of metal.”

Matilda stated, “My Dad goes on the bus to work. He has lunch there. He wears special clothes, not home clothes.”

Th e Kindergarten was granted $9,510 from BHP Billiton to fund a multi-function printer, scanner, copier and wireless networking early this year.

D eclan Martlew has been awarded his Joey Scouts

Promise Challenge which is the highest award a Joey can earn. Declan is the fi rst Joey in Roxby Downs to ever receive the prestigious award and was presented with his badge and certificate on Tuesday, November 20 in front of fellow Joeys and parents.

Declan has now been a Roxby Downs Joey since

he was six years old. Joey Scouts are aged six to eight years old.

The aim of the Joey Scout Promise Chal-lenge is to allow older Joey Scouts to gain great-er understanding of the Joey Scout Promise and Law. It also allows Joeys to learn about Baden Powell and the history of Scouts.

In order to obtain the award, Declan had to complete various chal-lenges reflecting the Joey principles which

are ‘Duty to God, Duty to

Self and Duty to Others.’

Local community radio station RoxFM now has a new Chairperson and

their fi rst Life Member.

Tracey Warneke was awarded Life Membership of the station for her involvement since Rox-FM fi rst gained its permanent Community Radio license in 2003.

Mrs Warneke told Th e Mon-itor the station has grown from an operation entirely run by de-termined volunteers, with only a volunteer station manager, a volunteer program manager and an organising committee. Now RoxFM has a paid staff member, a large list of volun-teers and a full Board of mem-bers.

“It is still a really big under-taking in a town the size of ours to support a community radio station but we’re doing it and it’s still worth doing,” she ex-plained.

Mrs Warneke said she is not sure how she feels about being awarded the first Life Mem-bership to RoxFM. “Slightly bemused! I guess I have such a strong passion for commu-nity radio that I don’t feel like I deserve to be any more rec-ognised than anyone else who volunteers their time to make the community a better place.

“We’re in a uniquely young town and I believe anything that can help develop a strong-er, more friendly community in this isolated area is only a good thing. Our town is changing all the time and if the station can bring us together, what a wonderful thing to be involved with. Th e media is powerful, we

should make the most of that and use it to benefi t us all,” she said.

Mrs Warneke said she would like to thank her husband most-ly and children secondly. “And for my friends who haven’t al-ways been involved with radio for putting up with my sudden disappearances on weekends to volunteer for an on air spot. I’d also like to thank all the people over the years who have been involved in the station with me. I can say that they’ve been the best bunch of people to volun-teer with ever. So much laugh-ter amongst the seriousness. It’s been fun!”

“If you’re at home, feeling bored and hot, the radio sta-tion has loads of jobs that need doing, not just on air duties. Come down, help out and get involved,” urged Mrs Warneke.

“The air conditioning is al-ways the best in town so it’s a very comfortable spot to sit on a hot day. I have always felt that I get more out of volunteering at RoxFm than I have ever given. To be honest it helped me decide to go back to work after I had time away with my children. I gained personally in confi dence, knowledge and skills just by vol-unteering once a week!”

Mrs Warneke concluded, “I went on air as a dare. I wouldn’t have done that if I lived in a big city. I DARE everyone reading this to have a go!”

RoxFM held their AGM on Wednesday, November 21 at the Roxby Community Club. Chair-person Kaye Doyle stood down with Jane Gloster now taking on the role.

George Giakoumis also stood down as Vice Chair which has

now been taken over by Alex Cameron.

Vanja Perovic-Vukotic was voted to be Treasurer again this year and Christine Doran is the station Secretary.

Board Members include Kaye Doyle, Liz Christensen (ex offi -cio), and Kerryn Jones (ex offi -

cio) along with new members Teresa Baddeley, Travis Hague, Kylie Piper and Jason Lowe.

Station Manager Julian Tre-genza said, “I look forward to working with you all making 2013 even bigger and better than all the previous years for RoxFM combined!”

The Roxby Downs Neighbourhood Watch group has organised engraving events for residents to have belongings labelled to

prevent theft.

Th e engraving events will be held on Th ursday, November 29 at the Roxby Downs Area School or Friday, November 30 at Saint Barbara’s Parish School from 8am.

Th e public are encouraged to bring bikes, scoot-ers, skateboards and any other belongings to have phone numbers or driver’s licence numbers en-graved so police are able to return items to rightful owners if they are lost or stolen.

Residents should attach a piece of paper to the item with their details for engraving. For example surname, phone number, and type of item would read ‘Smith, 0410 777 111, scooter.’

If you are unable to attend the engraving events, Neighbourhood watch aim to have more early next year which will be perfect to engrave new Christ-mas presents.

Both schools will send out further information this week.

Neighbourhood Watch member Cherie Gaskin said, “It is a good initiative for our town anytime, not just specifi cally before the Christmas break. We will be running another session next year, specifi -cally to be able to engrave any Christmas presents, birthday presents, or items that we weren’t able to engrave this time.”

On Wednesday, November 21, a shed at the Arid Recovery Reserve was broken into with property stolen. A 43-year-old man from

Olympic Dam and a 41-year-old woman from Smithfi eld were arrested for Aggravated Serious Criminal Trespass and theft later that day with all property recovered.

Th e 43-year-old man was refused bail and was re-manded into custody, while the 41-year-old woman was bailed to appear in court at a later date.

On Th ursday, November 22, a 31-year-old man from Roxby Downs was reported for driving with a prescribed concentration of alcohol. He was dis-qualifi ed from driving for six months and his vehicle was clamped for 28 days. He will appear in court at a later date.

On Saturday, November 24, a 22-year-old man from Roxby Downs was reported for cultivating cannabis after being found in possession of cannabis plants at his home address. He will appear in court at a later date.

The Federal Government’s GST review is expected to recommend expanding the GST net to catch $4.2 billion in online sales, in a bid

to shore up collapsing federal tax revenues.

At present, only those online goods priced at over $1000 are subject to GST.

A move to tax overseas internet sales, by either low-ering the $1000 tax-free threshold or imposing the tax on off shore suppliers, would be good news for local retailers, who have long complained they are put at a competitive disadvantage at a time when online shopping is growing.

Th e GST review’s earlier report warns the Gov-ernment is losing $1.7 billion in tax each year under existing rules. Th e Productivity Commission found in late 2011 that lowering the tax-free threshold to $100 could collect around $500 million, but would cost twice as much to implement. A federal taskforce is reviewing ways to make parcel processing more effi cient. It reported in September that imposing GST on imports over $500, would lower handling costs.

Th e current report has been handed to Treasurer Wayne Swan and comes as Deloitte Access Econom-ics forecasts the government’s taxation revenue will already fall short of Treasury estimates and push the budget into defi cit this year. Finance Minister Penny Wong acknowledged pressures on revenues but ruled out widening the base or lifting the rate of the GST, as urged by former NSW Premier Nick Greiner on Friday.

Mr Greiner, who along with former Victorian pre-mier John Brumby and Ferrier Hodgson partner Bruce Carter led the GST review said the review panel’s fi nal report did not make any recommendations about the scope or rate of the tax. “Th e report is greatly circum-scribed by the terms of reference,” he said.

But he added there was a chapter in the report which put GST distribution in a “broader, long-term context”.

Research commissioned by the GST review propos-es various options for expanding the GST net, includ-ing collecting tax from non-resident suppliers, or from Australian recipients who are registered for the tax.

He said the report would also consider the inter-action between the federal mining tax and State roy-alties. “We obviously do because . . . there’s a specifi c term of reference that’s basically about that,” he said.

Owner Manager Chris Dunbar said the family business of Sleep Solutions had been successful for eight years but would now enter a new era.

“We sold mattresses and ensem-bles and quickly grew a reputation for second to none customer service and amazing prices. Because we were an independent and didn’t have the

overheads the big chain stores had, we could aff ord to be really compet-itive in our pricing,” Mr Dunbar said.

“As the years went on we moved into selling bedroom furniture too, but we were continually unhappy with the lack of range and the poor quality imported furniture that was available to us,” he said.

“In January we acquired a manu-facturing factory where we now de-sign and craft Australian made furni-ture. We are so proud of what we are making! Th e furniture is beautiful, with incredible detail and quality and is completely aff ordable for Aussie families just like us.

“Most importantly it’s designed in Australia, made locally here in Adelaide and we use all Australian hardwoods. We feel so passionately about bringing the dollar back home again. For too long families have had to compromise on quality or buying Australian products because they can

be too costly but we are determined to change that! I could go on and on and on... It’s just so exciting!

“We are currently right in the mid-dle of doing photo shoots for all our furniture and working with our IT team to get the website going, we will be up and running online before Christmas.

“What is very exciting though is that we can custom make absolutely anything for our customers so even if you can’t see all our designs online this week, you may have something of your very own you’d like us to make for you. So many of our cus-tomers have come to us with pictures they have found in a magazine, or online, and we can beautifully repli-cate the piece.

Safety for the Safety for the silly seasonsilly season

A s we rapidly approach the silly season spirits are high, but it is important to keep a clear head when working at heights and with

electrical devices.

Whether it is in the workplace or at home, putting up Christmas decorations or lights, residents should attempt to not be distracted by Christmas cheer.

Christmas decorations only come out once a year and these include lights, the Christmas tree and hanging decorations. It is important to check that lights and other electrical devices are not damaged after being stored and are tested.

Lights should not be left on 24 hours a day, so it is important not to leave them on all the time.

Do not overload circuit boards which can be easily done over the Christmas period. After charging your laptop and phone, a fan may be plugged in along with Christmas lights, iPod dock playing Christmas carols and other electrical devices. It is important to be aware of the capacity of the power source.

If a power source is overloaded, usually the circuit breaker will trip or a fuse will blow to open the cir-cuit. However, there is a chance that if the breaker or fuse is rated too high, the wire to the outlet socket could overheat and cause a fi re.

Last summer, many homes around Roxby suff ered electrical problems caused by the dry and humid

conditions. Ill-maintained electrical wires are po-tential problems in summer. Summer rain and damp conditions also provide the circumstance for an elec-trical disaster.

If you do experience electrical problems make sure to contact the appropriate person to fi x the problem, do not attempt to fi x it yourself unless you are a qualifi ed electrician. Only 100 milliamps is re-quired to put the heart into fi brillation and possibly lead to death.

If you are hanging decorations or lights either, inside or out, ensure an approved ladder is used and appropriate hinges are used to hang items safely. Stools and chairs are not advised. It is important to also wear closed in, non-slip shoes as falling off a roof while hanging Christmas lights may ruin your whole holiday period or perhaps even longer.

Recovery can have a long-term impact on work performance. Make sure you have enough time to prepare, enjoy yourself responsibly and have enough rest to be fi t for work.

An accident can easily ruin holidays so it is im-portant to think safely at all time to have a happy and healthy break.

Th e “Woman of the Year Award has been added to the list of awards to be presented on Australia Day at the Roxby Leisure Pool complex on January 25.

L ast week we talked about preparing for the fi re danger season and the responsibilities we all face when the fi re danger season is

upon us. To assist our community, Council has now received the 2012-2013 Your Guide to Bushfire Safety booklets and is hoping residents will come and pick up a copy.

Th is handy guide provides important informa-tion about the way to” prepare, act and survive” a bushfi re. Within its pages are the keys to surviv-ing a bushfi re including a bushfi re survival plan checklist, leaving early plan or a stay and defend plan which are all crucial elements of your safety in the bushfi re season.

Th e more you prepare your home, the better the chances it will survive a bushfi re. Being pre-pared is not just about property and plans, it is also about considering your physical, mental and emotional preparedness.

Should you be planning your Summer Holidays at the moment you should also ensure your fam-ily’s safety and take precautions before you ‘hit the road’ during this potentially dangerous time. If travelling through bushland areas, make sure you take appropriate fi re protection clothing and equipment, check out the local Fire Ban District and be aware of the fi re danger rating for the area.

Wear appropriate clothing, (regardless of the temperature) including natural fabrics such as cotton, wool or denim (synthetics can burn or melt), a long sleeved shirt to protect the upper body and long pants or coveralls to shield your legs. Sturdy boots plus a pair of woollen socks and work gloves will protect your hands, and a hat may stop embers dropping on your head or down your back. Goggles and a moist cloth will help you to see and breathe if caught in a fi re as well.

Local ABC stations across Australia broadcast emergency information, advice and updates, so tune to them to fi nd out what is happening in the area if you notice smoke as you are travelling.

W e moved to Roxby Downs in 2010. I am married to Owen, a General Practitioner, and we have 4 adult

children and 5 grandchildren.

In our adult life we have moved about every 7 years, working mostly in regional areas of South Australia and in Nepal. We enjoy and are enriched by knowing people who live and work around us. Currently

I am an ordained priest in the Anglican Church and serve as the pastor of the Rox-by Downs Christian Community Church. Previously I have worked in medicine and education and understand that healthy and strong community development comes from the synergy built in and from our di-versity and diff erences. Social capital is a precious resource.

C armen has been awarded the Volunteer of the Month Award for October 2012. Carmen relocated to Roxby Downs 18 months ago

with her husband from Redcliff e in Queensland, and on Day One on arriving in Roxby Downs visited the Roxby Downs Hospital to see how she could help out.

Carmen became a Strengthening Our Families volunteer , and became a regular volunteer at the Strengthening Our Families coff ee mornings and mul-ticultural group mornings. Carmen is semi-retired and previously had only lived in the big smoke in cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. She said she wanted to get out of the house and experience all a small town had to off er. Th e best way to do this was to get involved as a volunteer.

Over the past 18 months, Carmen has been a ded-icated volunteer for the Strengthening Our Families program, while also being the current President of the Red Sands – the Roxby Downs division of the Cancer Council, a Rotary member, and an active participant in the Women’s Network Forum. Carmen says “It is bet-ter to be involved in as much as possible rather than sitting at home, and I really wanted to learn how a small town functions, so this was a great way to learn”. Carmen says “Living in Roxby Downs is an adventure”.

More recently Carmen has been involved in assist-ing special needs children fi rst hand and has, on a voluntary basis, been assisting ten Autistic children in Roxby Downs. Th is voluntary work has now led Carmen into a part-time paid role. Th is demonstrates how volunteering can open up many doors.

As a volunteer for the Strengthening Our Fami-lies program Carmen is involved in providing help and support to families in the family home either in a practical way, giving parents much needed time Out, emotional support and human contact as well as sup-port for special needs children. Carmen has chosen to give the Big Sky $100 cheque to the Strengthening Our Families program as she says it is a valuable program in Roxby Downs.

The Environment Forum has re-formed and last Th ursday night eight people gathered

with another six people commit-ted but were unable to attend. People came along bursting with environment related ideas for the community. Bree Galbraith (Environment Officer) said the night was a great indicator of the Roxby Community wanting to get involved and tackle some relevant issues within the area.

The attendees listed important issues for the Forum to take on in 2013. These issues involved pro-moting native plants for garden-ing within the community and the nursery businesses in town, and the destruction the leisure activity of four wheel driving can cause to the environment. Th e Forum has al-ready committed to re-establishing the award winning “Outback Smart” program, which is an education & training program to promote and support sustainable living within our community.

Th e community’s vision, as out-

lined in the Roxby Downs Commu-nity plan (2005), is that Roxby Downs be a model environmentally friendly town, with innovative environmental initiatives in arid recovery and highly effi cient management of waste, water and power.

In 2008 the Roxby Downs Envi-ronment Forum won an SA Great Regional Award for Sustainability and followed this with Advantage SA Awards in Sustainability and Innova-tion in 2009 and 2010. Th e awards recognised the forum’s achievements in establishing regular town clean up days, and encouraging community participation and education and im-plementation of the Outback Smart energy and water effi ciency program.

Th e forum members will be spend-ing the Summer break thinking up huge eco-ideas and are motivated to get some eco-action occurring in the new year. Th e fi rst meeting willbe held on Th ursday, Febuary 7 2013 in the Council Boardroom at 7pm. Everyone is welcome, so come and be part of this community environ-mental action group!

S even local basketballers have made it to State level to play in Albury in January next year.

Adam Ryan, Bailey Evans, Darcy Kenny, Jor-dan Crystall and Joel Young have been chosen for the Under 18 boys’ team. Zoey Male has been selected as a reserve for the Under 18 girls’ team and Madeline Young in on the Un-der 15 girl’s side.

Local coach, Wes Knights is coaching the Under 18 boy’s side.

“I am looking forward to coaching the team in Albury, especially having three Roxby kids in my team,” explained Knights. “I am expect-ing us to be very competitive, but will have to wait and see how we stack up against the other States.”

“Th is tournament is predominantly used to evaluate strengths and weaknesses within the SA Country program in comparison to the other States in preparation for National Team selection.”

Under 18 try-outs were conducted on Octo-ber 27 and Under 16 try-outs were last week-end, November 10.

Knights said there were two training ses-sions where players’ skills were evaluated in a competitive environment.

“Th e top 20 kids are selected into two teams and four reserves are also selected,” explained Knights.

“Under 18 Boys and Girls have a single train-

ing weekend and then compete in the Saint Clair Basketball Carnival in Adelaide held over December 15 and 16.

“Under 15 Girls have a single training week-end held on December 8 and 9,” he stated.

Th e players will compete in a six day carni-val held at Albury and Wandonga on the bor-der of Victoria and New South Wales. Teams will play a single game each day.

Th e tournament will be held from January 13 and concludes January 19, 2013.

Knights said it is rewarding for both himself and players involved.

“To see all the hard work done not only with myself on the courts, but also in each individual players backyards at home, coming to fruition allowing them to achieve such a signifi cant goal,” he explained.

“It is also a great to see such dedicated kids being exposed to these life experiences devel-oping new friendships, and having the oppor-tunity of competing against kids from all over Australia and New Zealand.”

Knights would like to send out a special thanks to the parents of each player who as-sisted him with behind the scenes work re-quired with the training sessions in Roxby and for their time and support in getting the Roxby Downs players to Adelaide for various trials, carnivals, and training camps.

Locals performed well at the Roxby Downs Swim Carnival last weekend, which attracted

competitors from as far as Burnside and the West Coast.

More than fi fty swimmers enjoyed a perfect Roxby Summer day at the pool as the temperature climbed into the high 30s.

Roxby Downs’ swimmers scored several wins, with fantastic swimming by Matthew Lowe, who took out plac-es in several events, including fi rst in the Boys 12-13 50 metre Butterfl y and two seconds for the Boys 12-13 50 me-tre Backstroke and 50 metre Freestyle.

Lowe also scored another fi rst place in the 50m Breaststroke.

Emily Miller and Emily Parker were also medal winners, taking out equal third in the Girls 10 and Under 25 metre Butterfl y, and second and third

respectively in the 25 metre Freestyle and the 25 metre Backstroke.

Parker also took out first place for the Girls 10 and Under 25 metre Breaststroke, with Miller coming in third.

Alana Dubrovnik took out second place ahead of other local, Jake Gotch in third place in the Mixed 200m Backstroke.

Dubrovnik also lead the fi eld in the Women 16 and over 50 metre Back-stroke, ahead of other locals Centaine Casserly, and D’Arcy Gotch in third, and took out another fi rst place in the Mixed 100 metre BBB.

Casserly and Gotch also took out fi rst and second in the Women’s 16 and Over 50 metre breaststroke, with fellow swimmer Kristi Jackson coming in third place.

Emily O’Sullivan came third in the

Girls and Under 50 metre Freestyle.Julia Weltner also put in a solid

performance, taking fi rst place in the Women’s 14-15 50 metre Freestyle and other local, Talana Jackson, came in third place.

In the handicap events, Port Au-gusta A lead the fi eld to West Coast C second and Roxby E third in the main race of the day – the Wilson Memorial Trophy.

Tayah Kruger and Julia Weltner came fi rst and second in the Open 25 metre Freestyle Handicap.
