This story can fit 175-225 words.
The purpose of a newsletter is to
provide specialized information
to a targeted audience. Newslet-
ters can be a great way to mar-
ket your product or service, and
also create credibility and build
your organization’s identity
among peers, members, employ-
ees, or vendors.
First, determine the audience of
the newsletter. This could be
anyone who might benefit from
the information it contains, for
example, employees or people
interested in purchasing a prod-
uct or requesting your service.
You can compile a mailing list
from business reply cards, cus-
tomer information sheets, busi-
ness cards collected at trade
shows, or membership lists. You
might consider purchasing a mail-
ing list from a company.
If you explore the Publisher cata-
log, you will find many publica-
tions that match the style of your
newsletter.
Next, establish how much time
and money you can spend on
your newsletter. These factors
will help determine how fre-
quently you publish the newslet-
ter and its length. It’s recom-
mended that you publish your
newsletter at least quarterly so
that it’s considered a consistent
source of information. Your
customers or employees will
look forward to its arrival.
Congratulations to the following Stierbachers who received Kingdom-level
awards at Pennsic:
Benjamin got a shark's tooth.
Saphir got an opal.
Grimm got his Yew Bow.
Well-deserved, my lords!

Cook’s Guild Relocates
Book Review Romano-Byzantine Armies 4th
-9th Centuries (Men-at-Arms
Series #247). Nicolle, David.
Oxford, UK: Osprey Publishing
Ltd, 1982.
This is a great book for those
of you who may be interested
in the history of the early era
of the Byzantine Army. This is
the army of Justinian, Belisarius
and Heraclius. To me, this is
the heyday of the Byzantine
era and the most fun era to
study.
It’s a men-at-arms book, so the
book is largely about the sol-
diers themselves, and the cam-
paigns in which they fought.
The chapter headings are:
collapse and survival (impact of
the Visigoth invasion of the
West), Justinian and his succes-
sors, triumph and disaster
(Heraclius and the Muslim
invasion), revival and counter-
attack (Leo VI and the reor-
ganization of the army), and
allies and neighbors (Serbs,
Bulgarians, Georgians, Armeni-
ans, Kurds, Arabs and Ber-
bers). As usual, there is a set
of fantastic color plates, here
done by the best – Angus
McBride.
This is a small book – just 48
pages, some of them given to
illustrations -- and a good in-
troduction to the era for new-
bies to the era who need a
quick, understandable over-
view, wargamers who need to
see what the army looked like
and how it was equipped, and
soldier-reenactors who want
to understand how the sol-
diers looked and acted.
For people like me who are
more interested in organiza-
tions of military units, there is
a long discussion here of the
evolution to themes—the
fundamental building block of
the Byzantine empire.

12th Night Costume Resources This year, 12th Night is in Washington, D.C. The theme is Ottoman. For those of you looking for help
with Ottoman garb, you will have at least two opportunities. At the upcoming Rapier/Costume Sympo-
sium, there is a 2-hour course on Ottoman garb taught by Faye de Trees.
If you miss that, Lady Álfrún Ketta from the Shire of Sylvan Glen, Kingdom of Æthelmearc has kindly put
together a list of Ottoman garb resources that may be of use to those folk who intend to make Otto-
man garb. Her list of links is here: http://awanderingelf.weebly.com/a-wandering-elfs-journey.html
Álfrún will also be displaying Ottoman garb at Holiday Faire A&S. We will have a hour earmarked for
Q&A where Álfrún will be sitting with her display to answer your questions about Ottoman garb.
Finally, those of you who are pinterest addicts can look at Álfrún’s growing list of pinterest links for
Ottoman costume: http://pinterest.com/alfrunketta/ottoman-and-middle-eastern-costume/
Stierbach Display at Pennsic A&S
P A G E 3 V O L U M E 1 7 , I S S U E 8
This year, four citizens of Stierbach
displayed their arts and sciences at
the Pennsic A&S display.
Baron Mors (right) displayed his
hand-made wagons. It was his first
Pennsic A&S display!
Another first-timer was Grimm
(lower right), who displayed his
weaving, leatherwork, and metal
work.
Amie Sparrow (below) displayed
German women’s garb.
And Richard Wymarc, who is not
pictured, displayed his astrolabe
research.
Officer Reports
Exchequer: Briana still looking for a deputy exchequer.
Seneschal: Ii is looking for a deputy seneschal.
Archery Marshal: Saphir signed off on two archery marshals in training.
Fredericksburg fighter practice is trying to get heavy and rapier for all practices. Fredericksburg practice should
be listed on the Stierbach website. On the calendar on our page, it used to be color coded for activity areas.
Not sure if it still exists.
Herald: We will need a new herald by January. It is currently Bertrand but he has to step down due to kingdom
law.
Waivers: Abe is kingdom-level waiver secretary. The Marshall-in-Charge (MIC) reports are due if you are hold-
ing a regular fighter practice. Or if holding a practice and everyone has a blue card, a "no report" is necessary. If
fighter practice is called but no MIC is there, then you cannot have practice.
Pennsic Wrap-Up
19 Pennsic first-timers.
Weather was awesome.
Troll went well after the waivers issue on Friday night. The first 1100 people signed the wrong waiver. A mem-
ber of the Board of Directors came through and actually read the waiver and noticed that something was
wrong. There were a few complaints about lack of night hours but not many. Briana was Troll 1.
Stierbacher Kingdom-level awards - Benjamin got a shark's tooth. Saphir got an opal. Grimm got his Yew Bow.
In camp, we went with the Culligan water system. It lasted. Went through three canisters. Normally we spend
$3-400 on water. This year we spent $160. 36 people in camp. Most were there for 1 week. We did less show-
ering because the weather was not hot.

Pennsic attendance in 2013 = 9,913. Last year was 10,000-something.
Suggestions for next year. Water heater issues. Water heater should be cleaned so it heats up better. We also
need to figure out how to keep the pilot light lit. Need new regulator, new line. Get a metal screen for a wind-
break on the pilot light. Was some talk of getting another water heater. Water heater prices have dropped signifi-
cantly. Get small water heater for the kitchen? If we clean the shower water heater, that'll work just fine. Cerid-
wen: The water heater might be depreciated so we might be better off to just buy a new full-size water heater.
Briana: The water heater is 10 years old.
$190 is left over in the Pennsic bank account. That doesn't count the money that Dex has from camp fees.
Speaking of the camp shower, we were missing a palette when we cleaned up. The palette and ramp are at Mors.
There will definitely need to be some camp improvements next year.
We may need to get a new kitchen tent. It pre-dates Brianna and Column as baron and baroness.
Hrothny offered a 10x30 tent for sale for $1,000 as a new kitchen tent.
Maybe use the silent auction at Holiday Faire as the Pennsic camp improvement fund.
Camping fund has roughly $800 fees leftover.
We are trying to determine who needs to be reimbursed from the tables.
We also might have to buy a new battery. People were charging their phones on the battery that runs the lights.
The battery died . It was a high energy truck battery. Next year, we will tell people they can't charge on the bat-
tery. Grimm: Would a deep-cell marine battery work? Yes. But Grim does too much and we can't accept a free
battery.
Disability needs help as much as security does. We had three carts but only two drivers. We also need feedback
from the disabled. Anyone who want to be part of making decisions for the disability folks next year, go make
your opinion known online.
Upcoming Events and Activities
Kingdom Rapier and Costumer Symposium (Aimee)
The flyer is posted.
7 financial committee members vote to spend up to $120 more for another classroom. (Post-meeting
addendum: classrooms are only $15 per day.)
Sara is running a bakesale.
Holiday Faire 2013 (Gunnora)
Budget done.
If we charge $10 at the gate for $132 adults, we will break even. Last year we had 368 people.
Merchants are $8 to get in, $10 dollars a space. (109 bodies last year).
Pre-reg tokens? Yes.
Keep the prices the same. We don't see the event growing right now, given the economy.
Tent on site is okay.
Their Excellencies will extend invitation to the King & Queen, Prince and Princess, to make it a Royal
progress.
Financial Committee passed budget for Holiday Faire.
Revisit where profits go from Silent Auction. Maybe to the Camp Improvement Fund.
Is the insurance paperwork done for the site? Not yet.
Gunnora has a list of open positions to fill.
Abhainn Iarthair volunteered to do lunch. We want to do a hot lunch. Sylvan Glen has offered to help.
Propane must be 30 feet from the building. Must be out in the open. Can't be under any structure.
