This award is presented in memory of Stephen Dearnley #1 who wrote the following

words.

“Almost every day I hear about some where in OZ giving a helping hand to some one

who has been having a bad trot. Perhaps it was a simple act of picking up a stranger’s

bike after a nasty drop and helping the owner on his way: perhaps it was to give much

needed support to a member painfully recovering from a long bout of chemotherapy.

What ever form it took this was an example of Ulysses in Action.

It is in the same Spirit of Ulysses in Action that supports me now as friends call or visit

in these twilight years. Because this spirit can over come petty squabbles and differences

and bring members even closer together wherever they may be, I hope that Ulysses in

Action may continue as my legacy long after I have ridden on.

We had our first social night for the year at the Blue Fin Fishing Club. As most of you

would know we try to a social night a couple times of year. In doing this we try to have

the social night in different areas. Thus North, South, East and West as our members are

wide spread . It makes our social nights accessible to all our members and also taking into

account the driving distance members need to travel.

This is the reason why we have three ride meet points to spread the travelling time within

the members.

Getting back to our Social night we had 12 members come along for the night. I think the

numbers were down as there was a long ride slotted in for the following Sunday. So a late

night might not have been a good idea before the ride for some members.

When ever you go the Blue Fin you are always welcomed with a great smile and the other

staff are always polite and efficient.

Service was very good and there was not a long wait for the food to arrive.

The food was spot on and there was quite an array of food bought and experienced. I did

not hear any complaints so I think that answers if the food was good or not.

The Club did not seem that busy on the night. Though there was a group celebrating a 21st

party.

As per usual the music was good and we were sitting just around the corner from the band

so the music was diffused and we could actually hear each other and have a conversation.

Thank you to Claire in booking the venue for the night. David and Anne had a dance

while Sue played the pokies trying her luck. But she gave her money back to the club

which goes back to the community.

Sue’s friend Margaret came along on the night. She had a bit of journey in finding the

venue from Learoyd Road as she relies heavily on GPS which was not working on the

night. So it was back to basics in locating the club. So it was a bit of an epic journey and

welcomed drink soon turned her attention to meet and greet of the members.

The pool table got a work out with Les, Michael and Davis and Sue with Cheryl in tow. I

think we all needed to practise a it more as there was some very slow games on the table

chasing the balls around from end to the other for a bit.

Cheryl had her very first game of pool and was getting the hang of the game very quickly.

I think if she had a couple more games she would have been playing well and giving the

boys a run for their money.

All in all it was a good night and looking forward to the next social event. See photos in

SNIPPETS FOR THE MONTH

Hi Everyone. It’s June and the temperature has finally dropped and now we have a cold snap at the time of me writing this article.

Firstly the President’s meeting which was at the Royal Hotel at Harrisville on 5th June 2016, was attended by Rob White who is the Ulysses Club National AGM Co-ordinator. Rob was invited to attend the meeting and speak to those present about what is involved in hosting an AGM event. At the past President’s meeting last year the topic was raised about a “Combined” branch AGM with some or all South East Queensland branches being involved to host the event. He spoke about items that need to be considered. Eg. Hard bed accommodation, camping sites, tourist interests, day parking, AGM venue building etc. Rob also had a CD which he loaded into his laptop computer which showed a tick-box checklist for branches wishing to host such an event. The possibility of this event is for 2020 or 2021 year. In his presentation Rob just gave us an overview of what is required by Nat Com. As I know more information I shall keep you informed.

Secondly, Memorial Gardens Update. The working bee was successful in the fact that some 30 cubic metres of mulch was spread around the gardens and the existing sad bollards were removed and the plaques of members who have ridden on were carefully removed and if you know of any family member who might like to have their loved one’s plaque please contact us or Allan and Savaugn, as they have some not collected. The Honour Board has been installed now and the next stage is to have the ODE installed in the centre piece of the board, followed by the new name plaques as these are now going to be permanent fixtures on the boards. It is hoped that the Honour Board will last for many years to come.

There is some minor touch ups to do and Ray from Redcliffe Branch will tend to this before Dedication Day which is planned for the 10th July 2016. It would be good if at last two representatives from every branch to be present. Starting time 11am with a short ceremony. As there have been boaties using the gardens as a carpark and thoroughfare (some of the boundary bollards have been removed) South East Queensland Water will be approached to see if this practise can stop, given that this area near the dam is a public place and the Ulysses Club have been given the gardens area for free (to the best of my knowledge). We can only hope for a suitable solution. Also at the working bee, Les supplied a sausage sizzle for a cost of $2 and raised $110 for the Memorial Gardens account, which at present is about $3,155.38. Ray from Redcliffe branch addressed the members with a passionate voice and hopes that the gardens will be in maintenance faze soon.

When you go to visit the gardens and/or when you see Ray and his crew please go and thank them for all their hard work in making this area what it is today. Until next month.

While attending a Marriage Weekend, my wife and I listened to the instructor

He then addressed the men,

I leaned over, touched my wife's hand gently, and whispered,

Looking like he'd just been run over by a train.

A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his

badly-behaved grandson.

He has his hands full with the child screaming for candy, cook-

ies, all sorts of things.

The grandpa is saying in a controlled voice: "Easy, William, we

won't be long, easy boy." The boy has another outburst and she hears the grandpa calm-

ly say: "It's okay William. Just a couple more minutes and we'll

be out of here. Hang in there, son."

At the checkout the little horror is throwing items out of the

shopping cart. Grandpa says again in a controlled voice,

"William, William, relax buddy, don't get upset. We'll be home in five minutes, stay cool William." Very impressed, she goes outside to where the grandfather is

loading his groceries and the boy into the car. She says: "It's none of my business, but you were amazing in

there. I don't know how you did it. That whole time you kept

your composure, and no matter how loud and

disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying

things would be okay. William is very lucky to

have you as his grandpa."

Thanks," says the grandpa, "but I am William.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS RIDE - 15TH May

The best time of the year to ride turned on a great day for us on Sunday the 15th

May. Not a cloud and crisp cool air. Great to be alive and biking.

A few of us met at Goodna Maccas and travelled to Maccas at Yamanto where all

branches met to register and collect some goodies such as patches, badges and ban-

danas. Ipswich branch had organised a good meeting place under the shopping cen-

tre covered car park and we all had a chance to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over the new bikes

and trikes that turned up.

Always amazing to see the effort some people put into their bikes, not to mention

the spondooly to do it. Some of us are still suffering from the recession we did not

have to have and others are doing just fine thanks. But, if all were like me, there

would be a lot of oldish dirty bikes out there and where’s the drooling value in that

!!!

Wrist bands on and mounted up, we joined the procession of hundreds of bikes un-

der a fantastic Police escort and traffic control operation. They were great support-

ers of this ride in every way as domestic violence takes up a huge amount of their

time and effort every day, let alone the trauma, violence and dangers they witness.

About a 2 kilometre line of bikes wound down to the Cunningham Highway,

through Willowbank to Rosewood, over the hill through Tallegalla and on back

roads to Haigslea. Then back through Walloon and into the suburbs of Ipswich, ter-

minating at The Brothers League Club. Always a bit of caution needed when riding

in close proximity to people you have not ridden with before and who are very ca-

pable of involving you in some bark off the bum incident.

Pity the poor people stuck in their cars at intersections as well as Mum’s with the

brekkie milk and Grandad with his Sunday paper marooned on the side of the road

as the thunder from down under took over their streets for half an hour in some

places.

Parked at the Leagues Club, Claire, Ken, John Mac, Trevor, Karen, Les & Geoff

joined forces and took over a table at the very well organised venue. Coffee, Food

and a great 1960’s band were on hand. Show and shine bikes were just fantastic as

always and Les’ big banger was in there with a great chance.

After the usual pick on the girls event at our table, we decided to head off on a short

ride to fill in a perfect ride day and chief scout Kenny lead us down back roads to

Roadvale where we stopped at the great Panorama Motorbike and Antique collec-

tion.

Having zoomed past many times, what a find. Brendan is the 3rd generation mem-

ber to collect and show an amazing array of original bikes, cars, machinery and an-

tiques. What a bike lovers paradise. A must go see again place.

We then ducked around the corner to the Roadvale hotel for cool liquids and telling

of lots of life’s stories on the great pub veranda. Great spot but it had to end and we

slowly made our way back to the real world. Thanks team, a top ride and laughs.

MID WEEK RIDE 15TH MAY

Weather forecast was not promising, but a w hardy souls turned up anyway – Peter B, John Mc, Roy and Peter

d. Over the usual coffee I suggested a ride out to Beaudesert, down to Kerry, over the Jump and back around

to Beaudesert. Ken had not appeared but called to say on way to airport to drop a friend and would be back

soon, also that Arthur and Annie from Dalby, who very kindly accommodated us on our weekend trip to Dalby

were at his place ready to make us a free coffee/tea.

It was a light mist on way to Kens, but stopped. Luckily John knows his was around this area and took us to

Kens the back way, with too many lights or school traffic, certainly quicker than going back onto the highway.

Arthur and Annie sat and chatted with us while we waited for the misting rain to stop. Eventually we left

about 10.30, still misting and headed down to Park Road, onto Kingston Road then Chambers Flat Road. It is

almost the end of the financial year, so councils are busy fixing roads while they still have the cash to pay for

repairs (Use it or lose it principle!) so our progress was slowed by numerous sets of lights and roadworks.

Joined the Mount Lindsay Highway near Veresdale down to Beaudesert where Ken fuelled up (had not had a

chance to fill up). It was finally a little bit sunny by now, so down to Christmas Creek, Hillview and up and over

‘the Jump’ and back up through Kerry and back to the Railway Hotel in Beaudesert. Lots of fresh loose tar be-

tween the Jump and Beaudesert!

Ken tried to enter the hotel carpark through the exit, interesting! The sign was pretty well hidden! Had a nice

lunch. The hotel was on several floors so thankfully they had a lift to make life a little easier for us to get

around.

Home was via Veresdale Scrub Road and Millstream Road back to Jimboomba where we all headed our sepa-

rate ways home.

SOCIAL NIGHT BLUE FIN FISHING CLUB

Rock Valley. Sunday 22nd May. So it was the morning after our social night and we

had an 8.00 departure time from Loganholme. To my

delight 11 riders plus myself were keen to see the

unknown area of Rock Valley. Claire, Karen, Dick, Rod, Damian, Rolf, Trevor,

Paul, Andy and two new gentlemen to our branch,

Reg and Michael. A quick briefing in the Macca’s

car park and we were on our way.

Our first stop was at the Rathdowney Park beside the

river for a quick stretch and rest. Karen decided

she’d keep going and stop beside a farm gate a few

kilometres up the road. I don’t think she recognised

Andy who was corner marking.Lol... Reg left us here as he was not feeling well. So we were off to Kyogle via

Mt. Lindsay Hwy and Summerland Way to top up on fuel. Then a hot coffee and snack at the local bakery. Got-

ta love a good bakery.

With the sun shining down on us and temperatures staying cool we headed south towards Lismore.

Turning off just a few K’s before Lismore is our route to Rock Valley. Stopping for quick group photo beside

the Rock Valley Sign and garden. I think we all agreed that the Rock Valley Road was as scenic as it gets for

the area, although a few sections had some pot holes, but easily avoided.

We arrived at the new Mt. Warning Hotel ( Uki Pub) just on 1.00 and the staff had reserved us two fabulous ta-

bles on the front veranda. The beer was cold, lunch was delicious, the company awesome and the new pub, ex-

cellent! Paul, Damian and Andy said there fair wells and headed back a little earlier.

We all decided to head home through Numinbah Valley stopping at the Beechmont turn off to say our farewells.

I received a couple of emails from Claire and Damian a few days later letting me know that they also had a great

day. Thank you everyone that came along on what I think is my first official lead ride.

Glad you all enjoyed the day as much as I did.

RIDE REPORT 1ST JUNE 2016

Mid week ride leaving Maccas Loganholm

The weather report was not promising, but we

had a good crowd turn up, Damian who was just

there to give moral support, Ken C, Roy N, Glenn

P, Adrian and Peter d.

Left a little late and headed down the highway

to Beenleigh south exit onto Milne st, then left

onto Beaudesert-Beenleigh Rd, right onto Wuraga via Tallangandra. Carried on Wuraga until

turning left onto Menora Road, changes name to Hein Rd, changes again and direction to

Stegemann Rd, right onto Latimer Rd, surprisingly it changes name to Quinzeh Creek Rd

and by-passes Logan Village. More wandering before turning right onto Chardon Bridge

Road, another hard right onto Plunkett Road, this comes out onto the Water-Tamborine

Road. Right at Tamborine, then right onto Mundoolun Road, left onto Kurrajong Road and

left onto Millstream Road at Cedar Grove. Millstream roughly parallels Mount Lindsay High-

way for a while. Millstream becomes Veresdale Scrub Road. Right onto Veresdale Scrub

School Road, which changes name to Worrendo St and drops us onto the Mt Lindsay High-

way near Veresdale, then right onto Allan Creek Road, left onto Bromelton House Road, right

onto Beaudesert-Boonah Road and then a pit stop out at Lake Wyaralong. Check out the

photos!

After a photo shoot we headed off to Boonah and

out to Mt Alford and then headed towards Mount

Edwards via a DIRT road, then into Aratula and

the bakery for refreshments.

Lovely roads, some roads some of the boys had

not been on before! And of course well led by

Ken, as usual. What a lot of fun we had with great

riding weather, just overcast, but no rain and a

good temperature.

RIDE REPORT 12TH JUNE 2016 – RICKS GARAGE PALMWOODS

Maccas Nudgee was the starting point. The weather did not look brilliant, with what looked like

showers all around. John Mc was excited to take us up to experience Ricks Garage at Palmwoods.

Bruno arrived, only to say he was not coming all the way – ended up going as far as Dayboro. Next

John Mc, Dick, then Andy and Rod.

Up the M1 to Bracken Ridge Road, up through Strathpine, left onto Samsonvale Road, becomes

Winn Road, then right onto Mount Samson Road through to Dayboro (Bruno left us here). Next

came Mount Mee, stuck behind Sunday traffic and temperature down to 15 degrees.

Morning tea and pit stop was at ‘The Place 2 b’ at Delaneys Creek – Café – Gallery and Gardens.

Took a while to put our order in and longer to get the goods and drinks, not bad though. It was pret-

ty busy. Had lots of cutesy animals pictures etc. around café.

Delaneys Creek is not far from D’Aguilar and onto D’Aguilar Highway, through Woodford and

turned right for Maleny on the Kilcoy-Beerwah Road, turned left onto Booroobin Road, changes

name to Maleny-Stanley River Road and wanders around coming out at the top of Maleny.

A very slow ride through Maleny, oops we missed the short cut, must have been a sign post missing.

Turned left towards Montville, and then turned right onto the Palmwoods-Montville Road and down

to Palmwoods, into the centre of town and lucked parking spots right in front of Ricks Garage.

There is a real working garage out the back with viewing windows to see what they are up to and a

bar downstairs and a new bar upstairs. You can order meals over the counter – up or down. We

chose upstairs, good thing too as the que downstairs was out the door. There are also lots of tables

outside to sit and while away the day. The service was very good and very quick, both in drinks and

food! The walls are adorned with memorabilia from bygone days.

Time to head back to Brissie via the same road to Maleny and then left towards Landsborough, right

onto Bald Knob Road, right at the end onto Kilcoy-Beerwah Road. Followed this road back to the

D’Aguilar Highway, where pulled over to say our goodbyes – some going straight down the high-

way, others back over Mount Mee.

Me I headed for Kilcoy, Lake Somerset, Fernvale and home, just as it started to rain lightly.

RIDE ETIQUTTE The following points are offered purely as guidelines --- they are NOT rules On every ride, at all times, you are responsible for your own safety and that of those around you, but the items sug-gested should make it easier for everyone to enjoy group rides if they are followed when possible. RIDE LEADERS

1. Before leaving, advise riders of destination and proposed stopping points.

2. Minimise lane changes --- there is a convoy behind you.

3. When at rest stops, give 5 minutes notice to riders before leaving. RIDERS

1. Keep at least one bike in view in your mirrors, if possible.

2. Notify Tail---End Charlie if you are leaving the ride.

3. Do NOT overtake on corners, on bends, or at double solid lines.

4. Bikes to be fully fuelled before the start of the ride.

5. Always ride safely and within the law. CORNER MARKERS

1. Each junction is marked by the rider who is behind the ride leader, so others know when to turn off.

2. Pull over safely near the corner/junction with indicator on.

3. Others will see you and know that this is where to turn.

4. Wait for Tail---End Charlie to come into view, and pull out before him/her if safe to do so.

5. If not, wait for Tail---End Charlie to ride past, fall in behind him/her, and overtake when it is safe.
