Planetary Archetypes and Astrology as explained by

Richard Tarnas in his book, Cosmos and Psyche:

Intimations of a New World View

What is an archetype? The ground of being; the

categories of thought; the eternal forms in which temporary

material forms participate. Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle,

Kant, Jung.

• What are planetary archetypes?

• Each planetary sphere represents a particular archetypal atmosphere in which a certain perspective and related attitude toward life becomes predominant.

• Venus: erotic love and appreciation of beauty.

• Mars tends to incite aggressive, competitive, combative attitudes.

• Combinations of archetypal tendencies manifest on Earth in relation to specific geometric relationships between Earth and at least two other planets in our solar system, including the Moon.

Page 11: The Most Hawaiian Island The Forbidden Island. Feng Shui Form School EastWest South North

• It is not that the planets cause the effect: it is more like the solar system is an archetypal clock, and at certain times certain archetypal scenarios are more probable.

The archetypal influences are more pronounced when earth and at least two other planets are at certain angles of relationship, which are divided into two main categories: hard (dynamic) and soft (confluent).

• Hard and Soft alignments.• The hard relationships are the four variations

of 90 degree, right angles: • Conjunct: when the planets relating to Earth

appear on top of each other in the sky, forming a straight line with Earth as one point and the other two planets as the opposing point.

• Square: when Earth serves as the vertex of a right angle formed by at least two other planets.

• Opposition: when Earth is in the middle of a line formed by at least two other planets.

• The hard angles create potentially creative and destructive tension, whereas the soft relationships of 60 degrees (sextile) and 120 degrees (trine) tend toward a more cooperative flow of archetypal energies, known as confluence.

• Hard angles are more potent than soft angles.

• The effects of the angular relationships between the planets increase in a wave-like continuum as the angle approaches exactitude, and then decrease as that angle is left behind.

• Richard Tarnas: “fluidly interpenetrating quantum wave patterns rather than discrete atomistic Newtonian events. The dynamics appeared to be complex, holistic, and probabilistic rather than simple, linear, and reductively deterministic. The correlations were most intelligible if they were regarded not as mechanistically causal in character but rather as multidimensionally archetypal and synchronistic.” (Cosmos and Psyche 148)

Page 17: The Most Hawaiian Island The Forbidden Island. Feng Shui Form School EastWest South North

• Two basic patterns of archetypal effect: synchronic and diachronic.

– Synchronic: archetypally similar events that occur almost simultaneously on separate continents with no apparent physical contact between the participants, indicating an underlying unity of the inner and outer world.

Page 18: The Most Hawaiian Island The Forbidden Island. Feng Shui Form School EastWest South North

–Diachronic: the unfolding of an ongoing plot structure in an archetypally meaningful way, as if picking up a story from a previous alignment of specific planets.

Page 19: The Most Hawaiian Island The Forbidden Island. Feng Shui Form School EastWest South North

• The farther away the planet the more archetypal influence it has on Earth because its orbit is slower, allowing it to stay in the powerful angles of relationship longer. The relationship between Earth and the three outer planets are most noticeable, although those planets are not noticeable by the naked eye.

– Uranus: equated with Prometheus, the rebel who steals fire from the gods to give to humans and is punished by the gods.

– Neptune: equated with waves of probability, and so in that sense is like Neptune, though without the furious qualities of that Roman god. Spirituality but also escapism and intoxication.

– Pluto: equated with Greek god Dionysus, and Indian god and goddess Shiva and Shakit. The titanic underground volcanic powers—lends primordial cosmic power to whatever it touches, destroys but also raises from the dead.

• Saturn: Restrictive, disciplinarian, judgmental, father. Republican, Catholic Church

• Jupiter: Expansive, jovial, success, inflation.

10 Problems Related to Site

- Limited supply/high cost of energy and inefficient use- Diminishing water resource and inefficient use- Built configuration/layout does not relate to surrounding environment leading to

stagnation and isolation in mind, body and spirit- Current campus not self sufficient re: food and energy- Current campus buildings are not flexible and adaptable to evolving

teaching/learning methods- We’re not tapping into the wealth of community / cosmological / cultural /

environmental resources - Automobile-dependent campus is leading to isolation in terms of community

and environment- Physical layout of campus creates fragmented campus community - Campus community not imbedded in surrounding community- Lack of well oriented and clear campus entrance to welcome and integrate

users, etc.- NO FLOW!
