Catholic Social Teaching

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity: This Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity invites us to enter into the mystery and dynamism of our Triune God. Our God is not an abstract force, but three persons so united in love that they are One. We are baptized into that dynamic love and now God’s life and breath are ours. We are challenged by this feast to let God’s love transform us more fully so that it pours out of us in all our words and actions. Such love enables us to be freed from fear and to lead others to that freedom. How can we give witness to this freedom this week, especially as we approach the Fortnight for Freedom?

Do You Really Know What You Want?

Several years ago I was invited to speak to a class of high school seniors about life beyond graduation. I found myself more interested in what they might have to say than in what their teachers thought they needed to hear. What I really wanted was to enter into the unbounded territory of the hopes and dreams these young men and women held about their future. I was curious. I wanted to know what they yearned for. I wanted to be invited into their hearts and minds. I invited myself by asking, “What do you want from life?” A few moments of silence, then a young man called out, “I want to be rich.” I asked why. “So I can do whatever I want.” I asked him how much was enough. “A million dollars,” he said, I remember wonder-ing how many people think that a million dollars will change their lives. I raised the question again and a young woman responded that she wanted to be a doctor. I asked why, she said “So that I can help peo-ple, relieve suffering, and make a lot of money.” I asked the question again and young man replied, “I want a beautiful wife”. Another young man with a firm and confident voice said, “I want to be the president of the United States.” When asked how he intended to achieve this goal, h e unfolded a plan that included undergraduate studies in international business and political science, followed by law school, local political campaign involvement, a number of sum-mer internships on Capitol Hill, a time the US Army, and an array of community service. It was clear that this dream had not entered his head during this brainstorming session. His wasn’t a pipe dream or the vain dreaming we do while we sleep; rather, it was the dreaming we do in the daylight hours, which gives birth to purposeful living and forms our future. The mood had changed. The young minds before me had been dragged deeper into this session of dream making by the realization that one of their peers had already spent a lot of time thinking about this very question. I was surprised and disappointed, I felt an ache within me. It con-stantly amazes me that men and women wander the earth marveling at the highest mountain, the deepest oceans....and all the time never stop to marvel at themselves and realize their infinite potential as human beings. If you don’t know what you want from life, everything will appear either as an obstacle or as a burden. But one of the great lessons of history is that the whole world gets out of the way for peo-ple who know what they want or where they are going. Be assured, if you don’t know where you are going, you are lost. Do not say, “I am too old.” Don’t say, “I’m too young.” Mozart was 8 when he wrote his first symphony. Charles Dickens was 12 when he quit school to work in a factory, pasting labels on bottles of shoe polish, because his father was imprisoned for debt. Mother Teresa was 40 when she founded the Missionaries of Charity. Bill Gates was 19 when he cofounded Microsoft. Plato was 20 when he be-came a student of Socrates. Dom Pérignon was 60 when he first produced champagne. Whether you are 16 or 60, the rest of your life is ahead of you. You cannot change one moment of your past, but you can change your whole future. Now is your time. What do you want from life? What are your dreams? Think about it. Ponder it. Write your an-swers down. Make a list. Even if you write it down now, put it away and don’t look at it for a year. When you do look at it, you will be
