In 1961 Castro commissioned Cuban architect Ricardo Porroto design the National Art Schools; construction started in1961, but was halted in 1965. At least one attempt was madeto finish the project in the early 2000’s, but it, too, seems to have bogged down.
Despite this, the Cuban government has subsidized the education of many musicians, both classical and contemporary over the years, giving numerous individuals a chance to fully realize their talents.
