Current projects: • AFRICA • Angola • Mauritius • Mozambique • Namibia • Nigeria • Sudan • ASIA • China • Malaysia
• Myanmar • Sri lanka • Thailand • LATIN AMERICA • Cuba • More than 60 countries
through the Nansen Program over 40 years.
• 2016: Namibia, Angola, Ghana, Congo-Gabon June: the vessel transferred from Norad to IMR
The original idea, conceived in the 1960s: • A research vessel available for developing nations. • Operated from Norway with Norwegian crew and
core scientific staff • In close cooperation with FAO, uncoupled from
Norwegian fishery interests, flying the UN-flag • First vessel left Norway in 1974
The Nansen Program
The Dr. Fridtjof Nansen RVs named after the multitalented:
• Marine biologist • Oceanographer • Explorer • Athlete • Author • Artist • Ambassador • Humanitarian and Nobel peace price laureat Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930)

NEW PROGRAM: FISH FOR DEVELOPMENT
• 3 main areas: • Education and research (including the EAF Nansen
program) • Business development (including aquaculture) • Management and legal issues
1.Education and research (including the EAF Nansen
program) • Continue and expand the EAF-Nansen program • Extend the Hjort center for ecosystem dynamic
studies in Bergen to provide guidance to researchers from development countries in utilizing data from the Nansen data base. (Part of the new EAF-Nansen Program: The EAF-Nansen Science Consortium)
• Technical training center for fisheries and aquaculture in Africa
The Nansen Science Consortium
• Main goal: to increase the scientific output from the Nansen-data (publications)
• Secretariat located at IMR – cooperating with the Hjort centre
• The work will be organized in regional working groups – inspired by the NansClim model (Benguela).
• Budget: about 5 mill NOK/year
Technical training center for fisheries and aquaculture in Africa
• Goal: to increase the capacity in
technical diciplines related to fisheries research and management
• Will offer a selection of short courses (1-3 weeks) – e.g. hydroacoustics, stock assessment, survey design, fisheries statistics…..
New Nansen program phase (2017-2021): Fish resources still central – but wider scope, including monitoring the state of the marine ecosystems, biodiversity, acidification and
impacts of climate change.
