I learned something very valuable the other day. We were watching a foreign movie about a man who had suffered brain damage and the theory was that we, human beings, are not responsible for our actions and all we do is controlled by our previous experiences and the chemicals in our brain. I wish I had known this during my growing up years …and I’m sure my parents would have felt better as well! It was a little strange, but I concluded that we should stop worrying about all the silly things we all did in the past and instead of insomnia, we may be able to get a good night’s sleep. BOOK CLUB

- Pat & Ray Cranfield We all enjoyed “Still Alice”, although perhaps “enjoyed” is not the best word to use. It is the fictional account of a brilliant woman with early-onset Alzheimers Disease. The book is well written, and created a lively discussion. Our book for November is “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and will be discussed at our next meeting on 18th November.

CRAFT

FROM OUR ROVING REPORTERS:

(Thank you to our members for their written contributions this month as well as those who contributed their great photos. Linda)

Discovery Centre Castle Hill – Friday, 18th October 2019

‘Twas a beautiful morn in spring when a small but interested group set forth on a journey (again with Keith at the helm) to meander through the unusually light Sydney traffic on the way to the Powerhouse Museum storage facility at Castle Hill. Sitting down for a quiet cuppa our two volunteer guides gave us our instructions for the tour, what I do I recall?

1) Stay inside the YELLOW lines

2) Don’t fall over (why were they looking at me)

All dressed in our protective safety vests we set forth on our discovery into “Store H”, just one of the many buildings on the site. The vast collection was impressive though we were only to view a small portion of what is held in storage for the Powerhouse Museum (currently in Ultimo but to be relocated to Parramatta sometime in the future). Leaving the Discovery Centre, we continued our Sydney meander, this time through Bella Vista and the Norwest Business Park to Seven Hills where, at the RSL Club, we took a break for an “all you can eat” smorgasbord buffet. Next a journey along the Great Western Highway then Parramatta Road to Auburn where we had the chance to wander through the magnificently presented Auburn Botanic Gardens and for some an ice cream from the vendor truck which was able to stop at the entrance to the gardens. A very relaxing day was had by all.

Beauty and the Beast Jr is a fantastic adaptation for young, up and coming performers, of the story of transformation and tolerance with many fun supporting roles allowing students to play roles inside the castle. The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he will be doomed for all eternity. A fantastic show at Campbelltown, with excellent costumes and performances by the young actors, in particular the lead roles played by Courtney Emmas (Belle), Jake Rouland (Beast) and Lachlan McInerney (Gaston). I thought that St Gregory’s College Year Four student Michael Yousseph (Lefou) was an outstanding performer. Watch this space. So after the Matinee Session it was over the road for our usual banquet at the Flower Drum Restaurant. A most enjoyable Probus afternoon outing.

TOURS UPDATE:

PROBUS TRIPS FOR 2019:

- Peter O’Loughlin

Only one more trip for the year but it is a biggy, with so much interest that we have two coaches for the day. We have our morning tea today as we cruise on the Nepean Belle along the Nepean River into the Penrith Gorge, then after lunch the highlight of the day when we learn what is happening at Badgerys’s Creek. Please note I have had to change the lunch venue for this trip. My intention was to have lunch at Penrith Golf Club but a change of caterers within the club and the new operators’ lack of ability to communicate has meant I had to secure another venue for lunch and fortunately the Penrith RSL Club has been able to fill the void for us. This is another of those “all you can eat” multi selection bistro. Don’t forget our first holiday for 2020 is the five-day trip to Mudgee in March 2020. There is still time to pay your deposit and secure your place on this trip.
